New iPhone app helps you score pot

by Chris Matyszczyk

States that are low on funds are steadily inhaling the idea of taxing the sale of a substance that gets you high.

Meanwhile, as if anticipating an uptick in demand, the folks at Apple have approved a new iPhone and iPod Touch app that will allow a little more mobile access to the soothing properties of marijuana.

Called "Cannabis" it is, according to Salem-News.com, an app that allows you to hold between your fingertips everything you need to facilitate your marijuana experience.

Your legal marijuana experience, that is.

Some states--California being in the surprising vanguard--have made the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes legal.

(Credit: CC R0bz/Flickr)

The Cannabis app's first step, therefore, is helping you find a doctor who can approve your deep medicinal need.

If your medical condition is deemed to be sufficiently pressing, the app then directs you to the nearest medical-marijuana facilities. Yes, it offers precise directions, just in case you aren't feeling at your most alert.

It even offers you the finest and most responsible locations of marijuana coffee shops in, say, Amsterdam, should you happen to have wandered to those parts.

However, it doesn't stop there.

Should you find yourself in some untoward legal kerfuffle in relation to your marijuana use, a quick sideways glance at the Cannabis app will find you the location of the nearest and finest lawyer who specializes in marijuana-related cases.

The app is the creation of AJNAG.com, which describes itself as a "cannabis lifestyle network."

According to Cannabisapps.com, AJNAG.com "will donate 50 cents for every 'Cannabis' purchase to a cannabis nonprofit reform fund, which will be set up once the application reaches 1,000 subscriptions."

There is something to be enjoyed in the language the organization uses: "Our goal is to put the power of cannabis change in your pocket while you enjoy the most sticky and potent iPhone application available!"

Sticky and potent. Yes, exactly the words to describe the finest iPhone apps.

All you iPhone users are followers. You are trendy, lazy minimalist slobs. You give up your rights to truly own your hardware and software. Just like the stupid Kindle. Take that iProbe out of your butt and smell the truth. You are owned by Apple. They love your barnacle brain stuck to their techno-bosom. Suckle away sheep. Suckle and pay.

shaking a BABY IS ILLEGAL !!!!!

Selling Pot may not be completely legal but it is NOT irresponsible you sad sad person.
by assman July 19, 2009 2:41 PM PDT
You're a moron. Buying and selling prescribed pot is completely legal in 13 US states. Shaking a baby is illegal pretty much everywhere in the US.

And how the hell is buying or selling pot irresponsible? You really are a sponge for government propaganda huh? Good thing the Obama administration have announced an end to the DEA raids on legal state pot-shops.
by ballmerisanape July 19, 2009 3:00 PM PDT
Your about as stupid as it gets. Go visit a children's hospital and visit the "non-accidental head trauma" babies.. think about their future.. and then come back and post. *ucktard.
by terminalblue July 19, 2009 6:00 PM PDT
shaking a baby is not illegal. TRAUMA caused by baby shaking is not legal.

you idiots.

Also, possession and sale of MARIJUANA IS STILL A FEDERAL CRIME. state law DOES NOT supercede federal law.

you people are so freakin dumb.

Dude, you just don't get it do you?? Shaking a baby regardless of trauma IS a crime. If you don't believe me, I dare you to shake a baby in front of the police. Just remember, you were warned.
by steveherb1 July 19, 2009 8:42 PM PDT
Now they're going to come out with " Shaking Baby Bud."
by benjwah July 19, 2009 9:05 PM PDT
Terminalblue: When you find yourself in a hole, quit digging.

Arguing that shaking a baby isn't a crime unless you traumatize that baby is like arguing that you didn't commit suicide until you hit the pavement.

Then you turn around and accuse others of being dumb.

Also, smoking pot is, in and of itself, not irresponsible. That's like arguing that drinking a beer is irresponsible. The act itself isn't irresponsible: It harms no one and causes no one ill effects (except for the user).

As for state law superceding federal law, that's not correct. In the particular case of Federal drug laws regarding medicinal marijuana, the Supreme Court ruled that Federal laws supercede State laws.

That is not to say (as you have) that ALL state laws are superceded by Federal laws. These matters have to be decided by the courts on a case by case basis, and usually end up at the Supreme Court, where a decision is made. Your constitution divides powers between Federal and State governments, and it's the Supreme Court's job to apply the spirit of that document to todays issues.

Of course, the real motive behind the particular Supreme Court case that the Bush administration brought against the State of California was this: Marijuana isn't sold by Pfizer or GlaxoSmithKline or Johnson & Johnson.

You can't embrace 20 TV ads a night promising your grandpa an erection and then turn around and get angry at people who want to smoke a plant that grows naturally, and that has been smoked for thousands of years.

*ugh* End rant.
by solitare_pax July 20, 2009 2:40 AM PDT
Of course, many of the laws that made pot, cocaine and other controlled drugs were racist in nature, designed to help those poor southerners keep African-Americans in line because they would use those drugs - of course, comparing the pot they used in 1909 and the pot they have in 2009 is akin to comparing a floppy disk to a CD-ROM for storage.

Fact is, if they legalized pot, and taxed it the way they do booze and cigarettes, the government would have a new source of revenue without raising the taxes on anyone but the willing buyers, they would reduce crime and the amount of money needed to run jails, and help save our national parks where criminals now flock to raise pot on federal lands.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
by chonnom July 21, 2009 7:24 AM PDT
You sad little people.
The OP is referring to the baby shaking app that was removed from the app store earlier in the year (or last year). I guess noone gets irony on here as the OP was just stating that they'll approve an app that facilitates access to potentially illegal narcotics (don't give me that medicinal use guff) but remove a cartoon baby that you can shake on your phone.

get a grip.
by assman July 21, 2009 11:43 AM PDT
We get what he's referring chonnom, we're just pointing out how ignorant his and your thought processes are. The app doesn't facilitate "illegal narcotics" as you said, it helps "direct you to the nearest medical marijuana facilities," which are entirely LEGAL. Meanwhile, the baby shaking app simulates an action that IS quite illegal and harmful if done in reality. Personally I wouldn't mind if that baby app were sold, but I can see where Apple is coming from at least.

I'm guessing you didn't bother to read the article before spouting off here.

It doesn't matter how many marijuana plants are eradicated, pot is still easier for high school kids to buy than beer. That's because beer sales are regulated.

Keeping marijuana illegal does not benefit our children. It benefits special interest groups: liquor companies, the prison industry, police departments, government bureaucracies, and drug cartels.

It is immoral to prevent responsible adults from choosing a healthier substitute for alcohol. If pot were legalized, alcohol use would decrease along with its social costs.

If you're tired of wasting money on eradicating California's largest cash crop, tell your legislators to support California Assembly Bill 390. It's easy. Visit yes390.org

Prison for all them. Even the children. Why do few people commit murder? Because of the penalty. The problem with drug dealers is that the penalty is not stiff enough. Life in prison.

To biffhenerson; f*** you.
by simply7 July 19, 2009 1:40 PM PDT
Prohibition of cannabis is the most ignorant thing human(anslinger) has done. Anyone that believes in prohibiting a plant is ignorant in there own right. I'd rather my kids choose pot over a poison(alcohol) without even blinking. The truth is it's actually legal in 13 states for those approved and the Federal government has given up and is focusing on the real problem PRESCRIPTION DRUGS such as meth aka what they give kids for ADD & ADHD.

I am not an avid pot smoker but seriously - how much money is being wasted on the enforcement of cannabis supression. Imagine if you took Cannabis off the blackmarket and tax it. It become a huge cash crop reaping tons of benefit. I know the question about worker productivity would be put up be quite honestly how often do you see a drunk coming to work?
by thelemurking July 19, 2009 8:30 PM PDT
WOW! Since when did they start proscribing METH for ADD and ADHD? What state do you live in?

There's already a lot of stupid lazy people in this country, the last thing we need is to give them the legal ability to become even more lazy and useless.

I've seen my friends high and they are about the most non-productive humans on the planet when they toke it up. It's just sad that some people are so miserable that they need some sort of escape, whether it be alcohol, pot or whatever. Sure pot is way down low on the harmful drugs ladder, but why stop at legalizing pot? What if I want to trip on acid every weekend? Maybe eat some ectasy and dance my ass off? Shouldn't that be my right if my other friends are sitting at home watching Adult Swim and smoking weed?

Shrooms, Peyote, Opium, and cocaine also fit safely into your argument and YES I know that mushrooms aren't technically a plant ;)

I will give you this, it is more of a waste and time and money trying to go after those who smoke pot when there are much worse things going on around the country.
by calculatorwatch July 19, 2009 11:14 PM PDT
@thelemurking

ok first of all you know that you can disagree with the use of pot and think it's wrong but still agree that it would be better for the country if it were legalized, right? because you know that people are going to use it anyways

and if your reasoning is that it will make the whole country lazy and useless consider that it's less addictive than alcohol so i doubt we would have more potheads than alcoholics and they would mostly be people that would be alcoholics anyways

secondly part of the argument for legalizing marijuana is that it provides a legal and safer alternative to more harmful drugs like acid and ecstasy so they wouldn't be as popular, and you can overdose on everything but pot so the more harmful drugs have a much stronger argument for keeping them illegal

and don't think about the "gateway drug" argument, the only reason marijuana is a gateway drug is because it's illegal and you have to get it through drug dealers, by legalizing it you're effectively desconnecting it from the more harmful drugs

and no meth isnt perscribed for ADD but Ritalin and perscription drugs are a problem (though ritalin actually increases productivity)
by Quest27 July 19, 2009 11:26 PM PDT
@jessiethe3rd:
The government can't tax it; the stuff grows *ANYWHERE*. thats why its called weed. cigarettes and alcohol are relatively easy to tax because they are a manufactured product, so the government just taxes the companies responsible, whereas any john doe can grow pot and roll a blunt. it takes factories and resources to produce alcohol and tobacco. think about it: thats why moonshine is illegal.
by dbanderson1 July 19, 2009 11:51 PM PDT
@thelemurking

they do prescribe meth for ADHD. "The majority of patients take methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta), whereas most of the rest are prescribed an amphetamine such as Adderall." -scientific american (this issue) Thats why Ritalin is taken as a diet drug and appetite suppressant and why when snorted has effects very similar to cocaine.

check out the article, http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=do-adhd-drugs-take-a-toll , before you start implying people don't know what they are talking about. You'll find that doping up our kids while their brains are still developing is having a plethora of side effects similar to do to those experienced by drug addicts. Anyway, I don't smoke pot ( I have tried it, its not for me.) but I think that the majority of Americans understand that it is very safe. Pot smokers veg out on the couch and don't harm anyone, drunks get into their vehicles and drive home from the bars... often killing themselves, someone else, or doing tons of property damage.
by Perry_Clease July 19, 2009 3:00 PM PDT
Good grief! Just use the Maps app that comes with the iPhone, set your location and then use the search field and enter "Marijuana." Or search for other things you may want.

Yes, let's blame Regan who has been out of office for 21 years and dead for 5. Damn you Ronald Regan and your trickle down economics that trickled down in the 90s when we had the glorious dot com days!

I mean it's not like a bunch of greedy execs at banks, insurance agencies and car manufacturers who made tons of bad finical decisions, and giving out insane bonuses had anything to do with the current economic state... nope, it all goes back to Ronald Regan! Thanks Perry, I really had no idea. I could have swore it was all that greed and corruption over on Wall Street!

thelemurking:
He didn't blame Reagan, he blamed "Reaganista"'s.

The groups you cited (The greedy and corrupt on Wall St, greedy bank execs etc) are most certainly Reaganista's.

Or were you under the impression that all those lobbyists from Wall st. that convinced George Bush to plan to put your Social Security benefits on the market were actually secretly cardigan-wearing Jimmy Carter fans?

Good thing that the Democrats shot that one down, or your country would REALLY be in a mess.

OTOH, selling an app that locates addresses for obtaining a state-sanctioned license is not illegal either, which makes him factually wrong. Methinks that poster was rather inarticulate (and his defense miserable), no?

If I take my software away from you then thousands of innocent users will complain that their upgrades have stopped working, but if I continue to sell my software and find out someone who loves it calls me lazy... Pot is still illegal, the law in13 states does ot change its status, simpy decriminilizes its use in some cases. Yes, people lie and use images of cancer patients to make their point that pot should be legalized when he reality is that the average user is between 18 and 49 years old and the most common reason for using medical pot, in california at least, is "anxiety". And anyone who believes that the pot that is smoked now grows "naturally" is either naive or a fool. It is one of the most engineered plants on the planet. Apps like these are irresponsible, buy who really cares. iPhone users are sheeple anyway who do as Apple tells them, so probably no one will even notice that their stoned as well. I wonder when a lemings app will come out and all iPhone users will jump off a cliff. Or an app to tell them to throw their iPhones away and go buy another one... The irony of Apple claiming the banner of "free thinkers" is amazing...

'scuse me, but as someone undergoing chemotherapy for cancer right now and living in a state where medical mary is illegal, I'll be the first to vote for it should the issue ever come up on a ballot here. Compared to other remedies, when hooked up to an IV and pumped full of rituximab, cvp and steroids (you learn to hate steroids fast), the pot is really the least invasive way to cope after those sessions.

I'm an n of one, but at least I know what it looks like from the other side of the misery index.
