We'll miss Russell Shaw

One of our tech journalism colleagues, Russell Shaw, passed away on Friday, March 14. He was on a reporting trip in San Jose, traveling from his home base of Portland, Ore. I knew Russell first as a blogger at ZDNet, where he covered broadband, VoIP, smartphones, and other topics.

Russell was very prolific and knowledgeable, and wrote about a broad range of subjects. In addition to technology, he covered everything from rock concerts and hotel management to politics and entertainment. He was a contributor to Huffington Post and the author of several books, including Caution! Music & Video Downloading: Your Guide to Legal, Safe, and Trouble-Free Downloads and Wireless Networking Made Easy: Everything You Need to Know to Build Your Own PANs, LANs, and WANs.

We'll miss him.

I am shocked and very saddened! Russell was one of the few ZDNet bloggers I actually met and chatted with a few times and this news hit like a ton of bricks. He will be missed.

I can't believe it. Read his blogs every day. A Great intellectual man who gave his stories always an interesting turn of phrase or wit--all written from the heart. I will miss him.

How sad - I was just catching up on my tech reading. First Marc Orchant, now Russell Shaw. The blogosphere has lost 2 wonderful voices in a short period of time. My thougts are with Russell's family and friends.

I met Russell a few years ago at a blogger meetup for Portland Metroblogging. He was one of the more prolific writers on the site. Having worked with him for a few years as a fellow Metroblogger, I am saddened by this news.

Russell was a dear friend, and like a lot of dear friends, I never took the time to tell him. He was the punny-ist guy I ever met, but a lot of thosse puns were good. He had great ideas, an unstoppable mind, he loved Portland and he a delightfully "dirty" mind when that was still possible. I'll miss Russell, and I'll miss the times in the last few months that we didn't connect when he was in New York.

I only recently got to know Russel, thru one of his more recent blogs and on a panel that he moderated. Truly a great mind, and contributor that will surely be missed but not forgotten.
