Microsoft fires its CIO

by Ina Fried

Microsoft fired Chief Information Officer Stuart Scott on Friday after two years with the company, saying he violated company policies. The software maker did not specify which policies.

"We can confirm that Stuart Scott was terminated after an investigation for violation of company policies," a Microsoft representative said in an e-mailed statement. Microsoft said that two executives--General Manager Shahla Aly and Corporate Vice President Alain Crozier--will assume Scott's responsibilities until a replacement is identified.

Microsoft declined to comment further on Scott's departure, which was noted earlier Tuesday by ZDNet blogger Mary Jo Foley. Microsoft also noted on its corporate Web site that Scott has left.

Scott Joined Microsoft in July 2005 after 17 years at General Electric. In 2003, he was named one of the top 100 chief information officers by CIO Magazine.

If anyone wants to enlighten me further, drop me an e-mail at ina dot fried at CNET dot com.

Fired for affair over subordinate
by danxy November 7, 2007 9:13 AM PST
The unconfirmed rumors over at Slashdot today are that he was fired over an affair with a subordinate, who then receive dpromotions and payraises.

Of course, this may be complete fiction.

He wishes they would say what it was
by ewelch November 6, 2007 12:37 PM PST
In this business climate, you not only can't tell anyone how bad an
employee a person was, but how good one might have been either.

All they would have to do is say why he was fired, and he'd be set
up for life. Truth is no defense, unfortunately.

There is a way around that though.

When in a position to hire people you are legally allowed call the former employer and ask them the 1 question that will tell you everything you need to know, but in order to do that you need to know the question.

If the opportunity presented itself, would you hire him/her back?

You losers think this is funny?
by deathstar2000 November 6, 2007 9:19 PM PST
After waisting a few minutes reading the imbicilic comments mocking Stuart Scott, it dawned on me that the majority of you are pathetic little losers whose only joy in life is seeing others fail. I'm not sure what Scott did, but it's a tragedy for him and his family. Per his bio:
"Scott lives with his wife and seven children in Bellevue, Wash. He spends his free time with his family, coaching sports teams, and playing golf. He is active in his church, and served as senior elder for International Community Church from 2004 to 2005 in London."
Seems like a standup guy with a lot of mouths to feed. Shame on all of you.

Not a tragedy
by gsigas November 6, 2007 9:43 PM PST
As a former Microsoft CIO he probably has a very high net worth (at least 7 figures) and could probably retire and still provide a very comfortable lifestyle for his whole family if he felt like it. He could also walk into almost any company, hiring high level IT execs, tommorow morning and immediately command a salary in the upper 6 figures (at the very least). This is not a tragedy.

I can't help but think he had to see this coming. Whatever he did to get fired, I'm sure he didn't do it yesterday and get fired on the spot.

What's sensational about this, is that senior corporate officers don't get fired. Even when they get fired, they don't get fired, at least not publicly. People in those kinds of positions are almost always asked to resign. So for him to get fired, and for MS to say he was terminated, he had to screw up big, big enough to know he was losing his job over it.

So if people want to poke a little fun at his expense, so what? He?s the one that f?d up.

Get real...
by xcopy November 7, 2007 6:11 AM PST
I think your reaction is a little over the top. I'd like to understand why he was fired before defending him or persecuting him.

You seem to think that because the guy can't practice birth control or keep his zipper closed (an extremely selfish and ignorant negative in my mind), was active in his church (so was Dennis Rader, aka BTK the serial killer), and hanging out at home or playing golf (Scott Peterson who killed his wife in CA) like to do the same thing.

You my friend, are lacking some gray matter if you think your argument means anything regarding someone's behavior... Time for you to get real...

At that level, you don't get "fired" unless you did something very, very stupid. More often than not, you're asked to resign, and that's it.

According to ValleyWag, it might have something to do with this "stand-up guy" doing the Naked Linen Fandango with one of his subordinates.

As for "mouths to feed", the guy was making something like $9000.00/hr over the two years he was working there as a CxO for the world's most money-heavy software company.

Even with the most rudimentary of money management, I suspect that he won't have to worry about going homeless or about feeding his kids - even if he never worked another day in his entire life.

Yes, it is VERY funny.
by RamonFHerrera January 18, 2008 4:37 PM PST
Stuart Scott -unlike you- being such a competent, gifted individual, sure has a sense of humor.

He also realizes that having such a visible job *necessarily* implies giving up one's privacy.

I can make fun of George W Bush, at my heart's content, but he *cannot* make fun of me or try to put me down. Find somebody who can explain to you the basis for the above mentioned asymmetrical treatment.

Incidentally, lack of a sense of humor is not your only shortcoming: you should enroll in an English class, or at least use a spelling checker.

Shame has nothing to do with it..
by GSale51 November 7, 2007 9:12 AM PST
I have no proof, but I am guessing that he may have told a press agent that they are running the company on Linux technologies :-) OR he might have said something which pissed someone off because he spoke the truth internally about the state of the company. Whatever the real reason is, we have no idea. It is just good to see Microsoft, who has near immunity in the eyes of non-geeks, have internal issues. I am SURE he was not paid very little, and he has a decent enough resume and he will be hired again, soon.

Who deserves a job?
by daver November 7, 2007 6:08 PM PST
I hate it when idiots think people "deserve" a job. That ain't how the free market works. You get a job based on supply and demand, not for how good of a person to do. Sucks, but it's true. Deal with it. Your attitude is the same one that is killing industry in USA. "Gimme this, gimme that, I deserve it"!

There is no demand for people who violate company policy no matter how much church they attend or kids they raise. Period.

Besides, seems if he violated a bad policy and was unfairly treated he should count his blessings that he doesn't work for such a lame place any more.

Deserving a job
by RamonFHerrera January 18, 2008 4:48 PM PST
> I hate it when idiots think people "deserve" a job.

It all depends on your definition and justification of the "deserving" in question.

"I have determined that candidate xyz deserves the job based on his/her superior qualifications, experience and hard work".

"The invisible hand (i.e., the forces of supply and demand) have decided that this is the candidate who deserves that job.".

"S/he deserves that job, because s/he is cute (or good in bed, etc."

"S/he deserves the job because he s/he goes to the same church (or country club, etc.) than I do".

Contrary to what you wrote, I am sure you can actually tell that the above statements are not all the same.

Not all the deserving and non-deservings are created equal.
