Microsoft moves MSN Video under Bing umbrella

Microsoft said on Tuesday that it is merging its video search efforts with its MSN Video site into a new page that will bear the Bing moniker.

Bing Video, Microsoft said, will serve as a site for watching everything from viral videos to full-length TV shows and video, drawing on content deals with sites such as Hulu, CBS, MySpace, DailyMotion, and YouTube.

The new Bing Video page replaces MSN Video and includes both video search as well as content from sites such as Hulu and CBS.

Microsoft notes that video is now a mainstay of the redesigned MSN home page and says MSN will continue to create original programming, such as its "Last Night on TV" effort.

The branding remains a challenge though, as evidenced by a video from Microsoft's Rob Bennett talking about the changes. The video, embedded below, features a "view more on MSN Video" link that, when clicked on, takes a user to the new Bing Video site.

The new Bing Video page is part of a series of changes Microsoft is making as part of a fall refresh of its search site. Earlier on Tuesday, Microsoft made some enhancements to Bing Maps, including the ability to use the mouse to alter a suggested route and have one's directions re-calculated.

The company said to expect more announcements later this week.

Yes, Ballmer sucks in comparison to Gates. That's no secret. Thanks for wasting our time.

I loved the preview feature but I seriously hope that Microsoft will make the Video search better. Google's sucked so much that it failed miserably for me.

Same video service different brand. MSN as a brand is obviously not working out.

I prefer Google video to YouTube only because there is no resrictions on how long a video can be on Google video as compared to YouTube. With that said, YouTube is clearly become a standard now for Video sharing. As much as I would like others to bring more creative ways to share or distribute video, let's face it no one is getting even close to where YouTube is currently. It would be wise for everyone to cut their loses and move on to something better. For Microsoft they should just concentrate on Windows, Office, Servers, Xbox, and Windows Live (MSN) Messenger. Bing, Bing Video, MSN, Zune are all losing markets.

That's just my two cents.

Wow, let me enlighten you a bit. Bing is gaining market share every month since it opened. Improving Bing Video would be a logical step no matter who owned it. The article states that MSN has now incorporated videos as a main feature of the home page so there is no need to have MSN videos as a separate feature anymore. The MSN portal is ranked third in monthly US unique visitors only to Google and Yahoo. And they are ranked second in the world for monthly unique visitors only to Google with a slight edge.

Zune HD has been praised for an innovative new user interaface and plays HD content directly to HD TV's. It also shames the iPod UI back to the stone age, while the Zune software has always been head and shoulders above iTunes. Zune is also becoming a main feature of Xbox 360 allowing you to sync music and video back and forth.

So you might want to consider revising your list of losing markets just a tad.

It's like paid M$ shills are able to ignore reality entirely and live in a world of lies and obfuscation. Isn't that a mental disorder?

@Super2online

Just an FYI, as a shareholder I don't care how good Zune is in terms of features. All I care about is will it outsell iPod and the answer is a BIG NO!
As for Bing, yes it's increasing market share but again living in the present is it even remotely close to Google... again the answer is a BIG NO!

As for MSN, it's still in the RED and how long has it been live?

I wouldn't care even if Bing was the best search engine in the world or if Zune was the best MP3 player in the world. Bottom line is they are not making money.

All I am saying is ... SHOW ME THE MONEY!
