Windows 7 to launch October 22

Microsoft confirmed on Tuesday that it is planning for Windows 7 to hit retail shelves and start showing up on new PCs on October 22.

To reach that milestone, Microsoft plans to wrap up development of the operating system by the middle or end of next month, Senior Vice President Bill Veghte said in an interview.

"The feedback from the release candidate has been good," Veghte said.

Microsoft made the near-final release candidate version available last month. Shortly after its release, Microsoft finally confirmed that it was aiming Windows 7 for a holiday 2009 release, something that was widely anticipated, but not confirmed by those in Redmond.

In an interview, Phil McKinney, chief technology officer of Hewlett-Packard's computer unit, said that he feels good about Microsoft's launch date.

"We're locked and loaded for the launch," McKinney said. "The quality of code is just absolutely stellar."

The software maker also confirmed, without giving details, that it plans to offer some sort of "technology guarantee" giving those who buy Vista machines close to the Windows 7 launch a free or discounted copy of the new operating system. As with past similar programs, details on pricing will be up to individual computer makers, although Microsoft did say the upgrade program will apply to Vista Home Premium and higher-priced editions (meaning not Windows Vista Basic).

The tech guarantee program is not beginning immediately, but Microsoft did raise the possibility it will offer some sort of lower-cost upgrade to those who are already using Windows Vista.

I've gotten a lot of e-mails suggesting Microsoft do something along those lines, but its comments this week were the first time I had heard it acknowledge that it was considering such a move.

As for the technology guarantee program, it likely means that Microsoft will do some deferring of Vista-related revenue, though Microsoft again did not spell out details.

"Depending on when we do it there will be the associated accounting for it," Veghte said.

Microsoft has said that Windows 7 will come in five different editions in most markets--Starter, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate. A "Windows 7 Basic" will also be sold in emerging markets, Microsoft said.

The software maker has yet to announce pricing for the product.

By "capital" do you mean uppercase? If so then yours is already lost.
by Sausagebiscuit June 2, 2009 12:07 PM PDT
What is the capital of Apple?

Also: LOL @ Perry ;)

"What is the capital of Apple?"

"A".

HTH :p

Well if we use WWII anology, while operation barbarosa was a success, Germany suffered a humiliating defeat in the end.

Really? Four people didn't realize he was reffering to "capital revenue" as in $$$?

Of course we did, but we were also smart enough to play with the statement.

Even with this "technology guarantee" I still feel Windows 7 adoption would be much better if an upgrade path from XP was made available.

I'm sure there will be some sort of option like windows easy transfer if a direct upgrade path is not available. Should make things a little bit easier.
by sythara June 2, 2009 1:42 PM PDT
Right now a direct upgrade will not be available, however all your files will be saved when the conversion takes place. Download beta and mess around with it.
by Vegaman_Dan June 2, 2009 2:27 PM PDT
Installing Windows 7 as an upgrade in the installation options will save your data to Windows.old folder as a backup, otherwise will be a pretty easy install.

However, it isn't recommended. All the baggage and issues you had with Win 7 may end up being carried over and you won't have a clean installation. It's always best to do a clean install of any OS, regardless if it is OS X, Linux, Windows or even OS 2/Warp.
by jake3373 June 3, 2009 2:56 PM PDT
I am also running XP, and I hope there will be some discount for XP users, especially if pricing is high.
by kineticarl June 5, 2009 8:56 AM PDT
I bought a nice jacket at a store 8 years ago. Now I'm going back to get the newest one with all sorts of great new materials and pockets. For some reason I feel entitled to a deep discount because, well, because .... gosh I can't come up with a half-way plausible answer. I guess I got a lot of great use out of the jacket I bought, far more than $100 or $200 would get me elsewhere, and I expect I'll get a lot more good use out of the one I'm upgrading to.

True, it does have the Start button functionality on the bottom left, it has a desktop with some icons, it has the time on the bottom right. Very observant. Use it instead and post something a bit more useful than bodily noises.

Doesn't run like it though, although I only had the 32bit version. Now I am cooking with 64bits!

I can pretty much say that you haven't, so save the comments until you have used it

@riazzdeq:

You know, I have the same opinion of cars. I saw a TV ad for a Ford F150 and I thought- Gee, that has four wheels just like a Fiat. They must be the same thing and should be compared to each other then. There is no possibility that two products that happen to both have the same number of wheels could possibly be any different from each other or offer any options / features to make them unique.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I "upgraded from XP to Vista". Spent a lot of time and money to "downgrade back to XP". MS is not going to fool me again. I am saving my money for a new Mac.
by jessiethe3rd June 2, 2009 10:35 PM PDT
Keep saving your money... you're going to need it.
by cosuna June 3, 2009 9:11 AM PDT
Agree with @coogrr.

@Vegaman_Dan: People say 7 is like Vista, not because it has Windows and a start bar, but because, inside it is basically the same. I have run it several times and have seen it "run". But who hasn't seen Windows "run" in newer PC's, even Vista does that at first. Then the Registry gets all crammed and buggy, and the something happens to the HD that starts taking dozens, and tons and tons of useless apps get loaded and the performance starts creeping.

Say what you say, but in the end Windows 7 was supposed to be Service Pack 3 or 4 for Vista, and ended up being a new release in part due to sub par reception Vista got. Going back to the car analogy, this maneuver has a name.... it's called "badge engineering". Remember the first Cadillac Escalade. Yep it looked like a Chevrolet Avalanche, cause it was an Avalanche. Geezh... guess I didn't noticed cause all cars have 4 wheels.
by dumbspammers June 3, 2009 2:34 PM PDT
Well, actually...

I'm using Win7 RC on my work PC. There are some differences in appearance from Vista, and it's a lot more stable and a little faster.

I am no MS fanboi (I'd probably cheer if I heard that Steve Ballmer got hit by a flying chair). That said, I really like Win 7, and will consider buying the 64-bit version for my home gaming PC.

Can you give me some detailed info about the version of OS X that you used that you think is less user friendly than Windows 7? Because I think you're bluffing and you've never used anything BUT Windows. If you were telling the truth your statement might have some merit. So tell me a little about OSX, and what Windows 7 has that makes it better.
by baconstang June 2, 2009 12:09 PM PDT
Hopefully they've added spell check the speedy one.
by Maxwell Studly June 2, 2009 12:22 PM PDT
@ shycelticwitch

I don't recall you ever asking anyone why they think Mac OS X or Linux is better over Windows. So why should anyone entertain your ridiculous request to give you detailed information or explain in detail what makes Windows 7 better?
The market speaks for itself and consumers will vote with their dollars. Lets see how long it takes Windows 7 to completely surpass Mac OS X and Linux market share combined? 3 weeks? Maybe 6 weeks? Definitely by years end, Windows 7 will have surpassed Mac OS X and Linux market share combined. Don't cry.
by goodspeed8701 June 2, 2009 12:25 PM PDT
@shycelicwitch go to school and learn what usability means then tell me if the mac and linux has enough tools/software to compete with windows in that aspect. I bet you are using vmware right now.
by shycelticwitch June 2, 2009 1:16 PM PDT
@ goodspeed. Hmmm... I do high end graphics and video (using Final Cut of course), accounting, drafting, spreadsheets and all the other "office/business" things that are IMPORTANT on my MacPros (3). I can also edit music, photos and video WITHOUT the high end programs as OS X includes basic software for all of these (actually, GarageBand is quite sophisticated in it's abilities). So stuff your condescending attitude that Macs are only good for iTunes and the like. The only thing Windows has that OS X doesn't is a bunch of stupid games to play. I have better things to do with my time, which is why I chose a more stable computing system. 15 years... 0 crashes.

PS.. I do have a Windows XP system, solely for the purpose of opening MS Publisher files (you know, that wannabe design program that wannabe graphic designer use...) so I can convert them to PDF files.

One more thing... did you know there is already malware and viruses out there ready and waiting for W7?

@ Maxwell"FUD"ly...how about reading the post I replied to before you drop your pants and show the world what an a** you are. "Windows 7 has prove to be the best os i have used from xp to vista to ubuntu to os x." was the comment I was responding to. And I really hope your dreams of a MS controlled world come true for you. You seem to live for it. But reality tells me that you're spewing useless FUD and not facts. I can't WAIT to see the "crying" going on after W7 is finally released. How good can an operating system be when it's user base skips an entire version because of "issues"?
by goodspeed8701 June 2, 2009 2:34 PM PDT
Well i like the fact that you said the final cut thing is basic and the music thing too. And how you also admit that you use xp to open some files. And how you also said that video game is stupid... lol last time i checked the gaming industry was doing better than the movie industry. Again why buy a mac with too much money when you know it cant do more than a pc or at the end you will need a pc just like you. I do music production and professionals will use protools, reason or fruity loops. I do work with large graphics files s i use the photoshop 64bit. can you do that on you mac?
by Seaspray0 June 2, 2009 3:31 PM PDT
@shycelticwitch. You think OSX is better. I think windows7 is better. Leave it at that. We are individuals and as such, have our own unique requirements and likes and dislikes. We are not the same, so I don't expect you or anyone else to like what I do. Conversly, you should not expect other individuals to like what you like. Some will, some won't. If the masses like windows 7, you're just going to have to deal with it. Also keep in mind that it's not just the OS, but the hardware it runs on. You may prefer computers from Apple, I may prefer computers from Dell, HP, or any of the other OEM's that make PC's. So far, all you've done is flame, flame, flame. People are tired of it. You don't like windows. We know! We don't care either.
by Mark_Anderson June 2, 2009 4:22 PM PDT
I use OS X and Vista. Vista is the more stable of the two and so far has required less reboots.

Frankly once Synaptics get decent touchpad drivers out for Vista on the Macbook OS X is for the bin.

YMMV.

I am really excited about the release of Windows 7 and look forward to seeing what last minute goodies are included in the final product. I agree with a previous commenter though, there should be an upgrade path of some sort for Windows XP users.

as a beta user from day 1, and of course the RC1 user I can say that the OS does not need any more goodies added. I can think of few bugs that need to be ironed out, but they are not stability issued but minor annoyances.
by Seaspray0 June 2, 2009 3:34 PM PDT
I agree, sythara. Perhaps microsoft has learned a lesson with vista where they concentrated more on whisles and bells than they did performance. So far with windows 7, they have kept it clean and efficient, and I would like to see it released that way.
by scorpio0 June 3, 2009 1:37 AM PDT
i think a lot of the bells and whistles on Vista were nice touches but definitely came at a performance cost.

i find vista a lot more reassuring and secure than XP, and if it weren't for a few third-party compatibility issues and vista's some-what heavier memory usage, i'd have no reason to complain at all.

that said, from all reports, windows 7 sounds faster, lighter and more functional. i just hope they give us vista users a decent deal on the upgrade.
by jake3373 June 3, 2009 3:10 PM PDT
I hope they give us XP users a cut on the price. Microsoft has said that they will price Win7 "aggressively". (I have used Vista b4 and i prefer XP) I also am using the RC (after upgrading from the beta), although I usually use my XP system because it has all my files/apps.

Why do you need roots for an old OS to upgrade to a new one? Could it be you are afraid of the same disasters that occurred with Vista? If you are upgrading from XP to W7, then you skipped Vista, which means you were too uncomfortable with it's programming to try it. What makes you think W7 will be an improvement. Must be because they have added a lot of features that you already find in OS X?

Silly rabbit. They've got you tricked.

Your comments indicate that you do not have a basis for your claim beyond what you were told your opinion will be insteaed of find out for yourself. You heard/were told product X sucks, it's popular to hate product X, therefore you will tell everyone you know that product X is horrible. At no time would you actually *use* the product yourself however, and would never know if it was good or bad.

Think indpendently.

@shycelticwitch. "If you are upgrading from XP to W7, then you skipped Vista, which means you were too uncomfortable with it's programming to try it."

I'm skipping vista and will be going to windows 7. So, did I try vista? If you can't answer that with 100% certainty, then I suggest you stop posting about things you don't know.

RIGHT.... ON...
by kelmon June 3, 2009 2:03 AM PDT
Well, I'll be upgrading from XP to Windows 7 simply because it runs well under a Virtual Machine. I'd like to use Vista but the performance is poor compared to XP so for the time being I'm continuing with XP, despite the fact that it drives me nuts. If it helps, the Virtual Machine is running under Parallels Desktop and I use the Mac applications as much as possible but there are several applications at work that require Windows so I'm stuck with it.
by shycelticwitch June 3, 2009 7:42 AM PDT
I am still running XP on my lone PC because I DID try Vista. Here's a crowbar so you can get that foot out of your mouth. LOL.

@shycelticwitch

Guess what. I DID skip Vista, because I'm uncomfortable with the way it works. But I've used Win 3.1, Win95, 98, ME, and XP, and I enjoyed these operating systems.

However. I skipped OS X because it made me uncomfortable, as well as Mac OS, OS/2, Solaris, and any of the Linux/Unix distributions.

See the irony? I've skipped one Windows OS, but plenty of non-Windows OS's.

Here's a silly little factoid for you- I'm typing this in on my 15" MacBookPro in Safari. My day job is fixing Windows systems. I have Linux file servers at home. I SSH into them from other locations. I still have a couple of SGI systems running Irix and a Sun with BSD on it.

I use whatever OS is best for the job at hand. People who are prejudiced like you are blind to the possibility of learning anything beyond the dogma you have lived under all this time. It's a lot easier to go through life with an open mind.

Windows 7 = Vista renamed. Microsoft must think it's user base is stupid... that or they just don't give a damn about us (only our money). Vista is a very large joke, and they can have my XP machine back only after either it or I die. Oh and if my machine dies before I do and MS hasn't come out with an OS worthy of XP's benchmark. then I'm saving up for a Macintosh. A 17" Macbook pro would do nicely.

I've been using Windows 7 RC since it was available for the general public. I also purchased and am using Windows Vista since it first came out. Vista is not that bad, especially since SP1 fixed many of the problems that plagued the original release.

That said, Windows 7 may be built on the platform of Windows Vista, but Vista it is not. The kernal, from my reading is MinWin and user interface may look a little like Vista, but the speed and scalability makes Windows 7 a much better OS. My main difficulty with Windows 7 is the network icon in the system tray. I wish that Microsoft would give the option for using the older Vista that let's you more easily monitor the network traffic at a glance. The new one just sits there, but that's really a minor problem.

Finally, I wish that all of you Apple fans would just can it. Your insulting behaviour makes me wretch and drives me further from ever wanting to buy an Apple... ever.

7 is actually quite good compared to XP in performance, you shouldn't notice unless you are running on a very slow system [like slightly slower than the netbook]
by jessiethe3rd June 2, 2009 10:45 PM PDT
Pst... I saved up.... I own a Macbook Pro 17 (it did take quite some time...)
I have reduced the Mac OS X partition to 10G's and maximized the W7 partition and guess what... I use W7 as the primary OS on my Macbook OS X.

Honestly, Apple knows its community is stupid enough to save up ungodly amounts of money for a machine that offers very little if not less over a normal machine.

Keep saving... you're going to need it.
by kelmon June 3, 2009 2:09 AM PDT
@jessiethe3rd

It depends on what you want to do as to whether a Mac is right for you. Given this it seems that you either don't know what a Mac can do or you choose a system that was unsuitable for your needs. I choose a Mac simply because it offers more for what I want to do, which these days is predominantly photography, something at which the platform excels.

Regardless, the Mac hardware itself is excellent. You certainly can get higher specifications for less but I have yet to find a laptop that I like more, particularly when compared to the current unibody range and the fabulous trackpads.

windows 7 = Vista renamed... um if im not mistaken XP is built on Windows 2000 NT kernel so your first five words made you look like an idiot before you went anywhere if i continue they have taken parts of the NT Kernel moved it from NT to XP in to parts of Vista into Seven. Vista was never a total rewrite of code this is only a few OS out their that have been TOTAL rewrites of code, even Mac OS have been built on old code you went no where only repeating what you read in Blogs of people that never see the light of day.

It will be VERY interesting to see what happens when Windows 7 and MacOS X 10.6 ("Snow Leopard") will be widely available by November 2009.

I think of both operating systems as taking the best of their direct predecessors and doing better speed/memory optimizations and some interface cleanup for better ease of use. Will MacOS X 10.6 offer major performance improvements over MacOS X 10.5.x like Windows 7 over Windows Vista?
by shycelticwitch June 2, 2009 12:15 PM PDT
What pot and what kettle are you referring to? I simply noted a lack of fanfare about this newest version of Windows. At the same time, I noted the rabid attention given to Apple posts by Windows users. Did I say W7 was bad? Did I say anything negative about it? NO. I don't have to do any MS bashing here, there is enough already posted by MS users themselves.

Yet I can go to the Mac blogs and find little or no dissatisfied comments from Apple users, but HUNDREDS of derogatory comments by people who have NEVER used them.

It's no secret that Vista was a pink elephant made of swiss cheese, lots of flash but no substance, and full of holes. There... I bashed Windows. NOW you have a legitimate reason for that statement.

LOL you know, there is a world out there that doesn't require the use of a joystick... have you checked it out lately?

Note also how many mac zealots have shown up here. It's only just June and already the heat is making people even more retarded.
by shycelticwitch June 2, 2009 1:24 PM PDT
i don't see any Mac zealots. I see one or two Mac users. Perhaps your comment is misdirected. Look up the word. Billions of people use computers, only 11% use Macs. Who are the zealots? I mean, it's one thing to be excited and supportive of something that really IS good, it's called "common sense". It's an entirely different matter to remain loyal to something that has proven to be inferior time after time after time. Yet billions of you keep buying that old line "this time it's better".

The way I see it, I don't mind a bit if Apple ALWAYS has only 11% of the market share. Then there will be 11% of us who really enjoy using our computers, and 89% who will be busy trying to keep hackers out of theirs while also trying to figure out how to turn off those stupid prompts that treat you like an idiot.

Apple = innovation and quality
PC = cheaper price

LOL I see that I have accomplished my goal. It really bites when people trash what you like, eh? Make you a deal. You stay out of Apple discussions with your uninformed opinions and I will stay out of MS discussions. All of you are having hissy fits over a few simple comments, and steam is coming out of your ears. Now you know how ridiculous YOU look when you post your FUD on Apple.

NUF SAID.

@ shycelticwitch

Time to get back to reality. Global Mac OS X market share is under 10% and is steadily decreasing again. Windows global market share is over 90%. Don't cry.
by shycelticwitch June 3, 2009 8:13 AM PDT
Maxwell, you seem to like making people cry. Are you the neighborhood bully? Most people left that kind of behavior back in grade school. I'd say you have a little catching up to do.

The comments here are getting pretty funny. I use both Macs and PCs. I don't like Vista based on my experiences with it, but I like Windows 7 just fine. Even in beta Windows 7 runs better for me than Vista ever did.

If the beta and release candidates are any indicator, my PC may be getting an upgrade this year.

Heck, Windows 7 runs better on my Macbook Pro 2.5ghz then OS X does.
by streamline35 June 3, 2009 9:49 AM PDT
Heck, windows 7 runs just as well on my MSI wind as windows xp does (with all the settings cranked up)
by jake3373 June 3, 2009 3:22 PM PDT
I agree. I have XP on a 1gig laptop and it runs well. I also have Vista on a 3gig desktop and it goes OK. I installed Win7 RC as a dual-boot on the Vista computer, and it runs super-fast... even IE is a little better, and Firefox is running as fast as Chrome (both very fast on Win7, IE still slowest, but catching up)

Microsoft has just hired the Apple marketing team and Windows 7 service pack 1 will now be called Snow 7. Anyone using the beta of Windows 7, and uses OSX, knows apple's in trouble. Admitting it is very difficult.

I use both and I'm sure that Apple will be just fine. Not that Windows 7 isn't great, it is, but there is plenty of room for two or more operating systems in the world.

I agree. Win7 is a surprising release from microsoft
by Vegaman_Dan June 2, 2009 2:56 PM PDT
Will we call it 7X? OSX7? :)
by kelmon June 3, 2009 2:13 AM PDT
It very much depends on what you mean by "apple's in trouble". If you mean that the number of Windows switchers will reduce then I would agree with you - Windows 7 looks very much to have brought the Windows platform up-to-date and is certainly much better than XP, which was what pushed me over to the Mac about 6-years ago. However, if you are expecting Mac users to switch to Windows because of Windows 7 then I would disagree - there really isn't anything better that Windows 7 does over the current release of OS X that makes it compelling enough to go through the aggravation of a platform change.
by ddesy June 3, 2009 7:37 AM PDT
Apple is in trouble? Oh please. Windows 7 is to Vista what OS X 10.6 is to OS X 10.5 when it comes right down to it. They are both moves to reduce bloat, further increase 64-bit OS usage, and increase overall stability.

My primary PC is running Windows XP and my primary Mac is running OS X 10.4. Neither Vista or OS X 10.5 really offered enough reason to upgrade with the increasing bloat and compatibility issues. (Yes, OS X 10.5 did have some issues with software...) Both Windows 7 and OS X 10.6 seem to be worth upgrading to.

Of course on the other hand as kelmon mentioned, if Windows 7 is what it seems than people might not be as quick to switch to Mac OS X. Vista seemed to drive a number of people in that direction.

thats because you can play games on windows, along with other stuff... hehe jkj.

Serisouly, Win7 is a huge improvement, and I find myself surprised
by kelmon June 3, 2009 2:15 AM PDT
Honestly, I'm waiting to see what Snow Leopard is actually like before making a judgement.
by Vegaman_Dan June 4, 2009 10:31 PM PDT
I'm running 10.4.11 myself at the moment- I just can't quite justify the $129 price OS X keeps tossing out for upgrades which in the Windows world are free service packs. :/

I'm waiting for 10.6 and I'll upgrade then. No point in paying $129 for 10.5 and then again for 10.6.
by odubtaig June 2, 2009 12:41 PM PDT
Think I might use this as an excuse to buy a new computer if I have the money; 64Bit 7 with XP Mode and Ubuntu wouldn't be a bad combo. Everything I've heard is that it's what Vista should have been (no, I don't have the time myself). Might wait for SP1 though.

Now, all that's needed is a tool to find a Mac fan on CNET with critical analysis abilities. So many just don't seem to have any conception that there's a flaw until Apple does something about it. Like the keyboard. Now, many of us knew it was spongey as... for years but reading a review of the new keyboard saying 'going back to the old keyboard felt spongey' was just mind boggling. Like, what, you didn't know already? Haven't you ever used other keyboards? You live in isolation or something?

OK, since I'm sure the Linux zealots are feeling left out: it's not perfect, there are flaws and the user is not stupid. get over it.

Anyone using BSD? Solaris?

If Microsoft is seriously thinking of going without an XP upgrade option at final release time, they are dumber than I thought.

The biggest problem Microsoft has right now is people not upgrading. "I have an idea, let's make it even harder for them to do so!"

it does, its just not called upgrade and more of a 'complete switch' but still keep old data.

I don't know why people are spreading this rumor thats you'll lose all your data by switching.

Well, Well, Well.... October 22! Soooooooo............................. close to the date of a previous launch (Birth Date) of your "Twin Brother" (OS/2 Warp) that was thrown out of the window with the bath-water..... - eh! You (Windows 7) must miss "him" very much even as you get older and more matured - it must be the effects of the "g-e-n-e-s" (Code-Base OS/2) inside!

Cool!

I think its "Twin Sister"...I may be wrong but thats what i heard. It was codenamed Vienna.
by MadLyb June 2, 2009 4:48 PM PDT
Wouldn't be a Windows post with Spock showing up to talk about OS2.

MS hood winked IBM...and pretty much got away with it...deal with it.

Or promote a really great OS...like CPM.
by sanenazok June 2, 2009 7:35 PM PDT
Spock: it's time for a reboot. OS/2 is not the twin brother of Windows. OS/2 is Window's great aunt who was supposed to leave a big estate but instead gave it to some televangelist.
by Commander_Spock June 2, 2009 9:23 PM PDT
Hey "sanenazok"! Got to tell ya dude that while Commander_Spock and Crew are not quite sure what you plan on toasting on..... never mind the "Aunt's Estate" that OS/2 was deprived of; but, hold on a few more months until those NASA Space Shuttles are moth-balled then those on planet "Earth" will know for sure which OS has become the "Chief Corner Stone" to get to the International Space Station.

Btw, who ever said it was all about the OS anyway; and, let's hope that you are not drinking the same "cocktails" that were being consumed at Chrysler, General Motors..... so much so they appear not to know in which direction they are suppose to go as once enterprising American companies.

It may be. OSX is still good, don't get me wrong, and many won't switch just because.

It is definately a good OS though, and thats looking from Beta and RC1.
by mgheff June 2, 2009 3:44 PM PDT
I agree that it looks good absolutely. Iy will take a little adjusting with the new taskbar ehh I mean superbar :p I have used it, and I prefer the dock on Mac OS X. It is all personal preference, though. I would not mind using Windows 7, and it definitely is so far better than Windows Vista and XP. We'll have to see how Mac OS X Snow Leopard stacks up against Windows 7.
by kelmon June 3, 2009 2:26 AM PDT
If your Mac can run it then I certainly recommend installing the Windows 7 Release Candidate under Boot Camp so that you can critically evaluate it, not least because it is free and should give a good idea of what the final release will be like. After that you can determine whether the platform is right for you. If so then you can continue to run it on your Mac until the hardware needs to be changed and then buy a cheaper PC instead of a Mac. Just remember, it's the applications that are important so ensure that you can find good Windows alternatives to your Mac applications before committing to a switch and take account of the cost of doing so. For example, if you have a license for a Mac version of Photoshop then remember that this does not entitle you to a license for a Windows version and the Mac version does not qualify as a version to get a Windows upgrade version with.

Personally, I find Windows 7 to be much better than Windows XP but it is not sufficiently good enough that I'd consider switching back to Windows from the Mac. So far it just seems to have achieve parity and there isn't really anything in the current Mac platform that is bothering me, whereas Windows XP drove me sufficiently nuts to prompt the original switch.
by mgheff June 3, 2009 3:32 AM PDT
YesI am in the same boat as you right now. I am pretty sure I will stick with Mac OS X. I tried Windows 7 in Virtual PC on my old windows xp machine (not that that is fair to judge it on). Besides it being slow on the cruddy program, I liked the idea. I like the icons, but I find the bigger and centered icons on Mac OS X are more useful for me. If anything I will wait for final release so I don't have to worry about the rc expiring.

I would but the computer I'm using is just under a year old, I don't want to screw it up yet
