Windows 7 Release Candidate debuts early

SOMEWHERE OVER COLORADO--As I wend my way back to San Francisco, the release candidate of Windows 7 has made its public debut.

After arriving first on torrent sites and then last week showing up on Microsoft's developer program Web sites, the operating system arrived on the main Microsoft.com late on Monday night. The software was slated to be made publicly available on Tuesday.

The release candidate version, officially build 7100, is expected to be the last major public test of the product before it is finalized. The company will only officially confirm it plans to release Windows 7 before Windows Vista hits its third anniversary of broad availability in January. However, the software maker is widely seen as aiming to finish it soon enough for it to be on PCs that ship during this year's holiday shopping season.

When it hit the MSDN and TechNet sites last week, Microsoft faced a crush of demand and encountered glitches. We'll try to keep track of how things go this time around. Let us know if it works for you. (Add your rating to Download.com)

A Microsoft representative was not immediately available for comment.

Installed 32-bit Ultimate RC1 this past Friday night on my previous Vista box at home. Installed flawlessly, all of my programs work perfectly, except TweetDeck -- it's a big buggy, but it's always been a little buggy. But otherwise, I give it a 10 out of 10. Seriously. It's that good. It's what Vista should've been.

Once word of mouth begins to spread about 7 and how great it is, I think we'll stop seeing any market share gain from Apple. And all those businesses that were holding off on rolling out Vista will now most definitely roll out 7. I know I'll be recommending it to my Director (I'm a sys admin).

100% agree with you

Try the 64-bit version, it's better, faster and more secure (KPP) than it's x86 version. I get more FPS in 7 x64 than on x86 when playing games :)

I love Windows 7, been using it for a few months now. Has blown my mind, though Apple has a knack for letting Microsoft try to catch up before releasing something new and better... (snow leopard anyone?)
by shellcodes_coder May 4, 2009 11:16 PM PDT
Crap OS X Snow Leopard is just an update to Leopard. It's an endangered species aka endangered OS LOL
by MPB May 4, 2009 11:16 PM PDT
Yes i agree Windows 7 is what vista should have been, BUT!!! I don't think we will see a drop in Mac sales. Mainly because Microsoft is being reactive while Apple is being proactive.

Apple with Snow Leopard is setting a new stage for future development of the Mac Platform. Where Microsoft is still stuck in the past trying to 're-invent and fix' the Vista problem.

And there really isn't much difference in 'under the hood' technologies between Vista and 7. Windows 7 is just Windows Vista only it works better, looks prettier, and has a few more features.

But I have no doubt that Windows 7 will sell well especially if your coming from Vista. (after all it will be installed on every new PC)

Apple always have something up their sleeve, so we can never be sure what they are going to pull out next. I think i'll wait for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard to arrive, before I make a final judgement.
by goodspeed8701 May 5, 2009 12:33 AM PDT
@MPB if windows 7 is vista! what will you say about the osx eg tiger and leopard? whats the differents? your comment should have been nice but that statement makes it sux. from all what i have seen the osx leopard is not better than leopard. you always brag about how easy it is to us the osx. and ubuntu users will also jumping in and say how ubuntu is user friendly.

From my point the os that can do more{usability} is the winner. and the osx is stuck with same ui for ages now so how are the proactive. windows 7 is vista what will you say about osx leopard. its tiger with some added features just like you said.
by MPB May 5, 2009 2:12 AM PDT
@ goodspeed8701

Yes i would agree with you IF!! i was talking about OS X Tiger and OS X Leopard.

But what I'm talking about is OS X Leopard and OS X Snow Leopard. Apple even stated that they will be 'taking time from adding new features, so that they can work on what's under the hood'. So by Apple adding in and improving things like Grand central, Open CL, and 64 Bit technology (and not 32 bit and 64 bit versions, because only having a 64 bit OS strongly encourages developers to write apps, and drivers etc, in 64 bit).

They are being 'proactive' because that is setting a stage for a future Apple OS. They are making sure they get it right the first time before they focus on new features. Unlike Vista which tried to do everything at once and failed, Windows 7 is a 'Vista fix' or a "Vista should have been" and a catch up, so this is being 'reactive'. But by saying that I'm not saying it is a crap OS.

Now usability for you is a big thing and thats ok (after all whats the point of having a computer that isn't useful).
But for me personally I think it is better to have a solid and stable platform and wait for the developers to catch up (releasing new apps etc.). And besides Macs are increasing their usability, thats partially why they created Boot-camp, just in case their is an app on Windows that you really need to use. In fact I think that Macs becoming more useable is a large part of what is driving Macs sales.
by goodspeed8701 May 5, 2009 4:32 AM PDT
@mpb Please stop this proactive thing. Windows xp has 64bit version almost a decade now. Open cl is not their technology and it will also be ported with windows 7.

Windows 7 is not vista fix. vista works fine if you have the right hardwaare. lets see what happens when you need a new hardware to run snow leopard. cos i beleive is what apple will do. and you will see flames of people bashing the os. Vista works fine on my hp dv6000 laptop and the only thing i needed to install is the mcard reader driver. now i am on windows 7 much different and better than vista.

When you talk about stability vista is 1.5 times more stable than any mac os.

bootcamp just shows how useless the os is. cos if you pay more for hardware and os and yet you need to pay for another os to equal what windows xp or vista or windows 7 can do then you have to dream again. i used osx on my hp dv6000 and i most say mac fans just like trolling. i bought my hp dv6000 2006 and not a single crash or virus. now i am thinking of the hp thinkpad. by the way windows 7 is proactive cos of the multitouch they added.
by MPB May 5, 2009 5:55 AM PDT
Ok. I guess the whole thing comes down to whatever OS you are comfortable with.
by jmphillips76 May 5, 2009 11:37 AM PDT
ok I only messed with apple computers at my local best buy, and to say I am not that impressed with any of it. I have a Walmart special laptop one that came with a backpack and a memory stick (eMachines N-10) It came with Xp (dated and not very appealing to me) It originally had a Sempron Mobile processor I changed it to a Turion, it originally had on 512 MB I bought 2 gb at "wally world" I currently have Vista Home Premium (had it for about 8 months now) All I ever hear is "Vista isn't stable ... Vista this .... Vista ... and so on" (people that use it regularly would agree that its a nice os) I have yet to run into any problems and I am very critical of things ... "I am a person who buys a water proof watch and the first thing I do is throw it in the pool .... I like to tear things apart to see how they work" So Vista to me is a good os.

Then I downloaded Windows 7 Beta and that program runs so much smoother on my laptop ... it feels so much lighter. and thats what I need (Ubuntu and several other free os just didnt do it for me)

haha where did you pull that from. Do you in some way feel threatened by Apple's success?

seriously don't say stuff like that unless you can back it up, it's degrading to both Windows and Apple fans.

You don't know what it will do. It may do well, it may not. It does show alot of promise. As for the namecalling, it puts you on the same level as the other scum around here. If you can't show respect, don't expect to recieve any.

As Newtonian Physics would suggest - The "Apple Would Not Fall From The Tree"; and, considering circa 1980's when "In the Beginning (it was) DOS - 1981" (for those who are to young to have known without doing their research)

http://www.os2bbs.com/OS2News/OS2History.html

and, if the Dwellers On The Redmond Campus have not sat down with (the "American Bankers, Economists, American Home Owners et al) to know what their needs are... then; and, until then "American folks" would not be able to say - It's "Mission Accomplished" - Again!

"When The Concorde Flies Again" - Commercially.... Perhaps, then; and only then we would know what they really did on the Redmond Campus over the last few years!

How much was spent on Code-Base OS/2 (Windows 7) this time around - eh!

That was a pretty crappy link. You can see that the author has an agenda when he says "IBM made a promise to its customers that they would provide a multitasking operating system for the PC-AT. IBM keeps its promises, unlike Microsoft."

He's talking about the 80286 when he says this. And he pans MS & Bill Gates saying "He publicly called the 80286 "brain dead" and constantly attempted to turn IBM away from creating OS/2 for the 80286 and to jump instead to the 80386 which was then under development at Intel."

Well, that just goes to show, that MS knew what they were promising, and IBM didn't. How exactly did IBM propose to design a true multitasking OS on a processor that didn't have real and protected modes? It made sense to wait for the 386.

And finally he goes on to tout OS/2 as an example of IBM keeping it's promise. I guess that would be the same OS/2 designed by Microsoft (they hired Dave Cutler for that precise purpose) and evolved into NT and it's latest incarnation is the Windows 7 RC mentioned in this very article.

Most of this history is so old, you get countless revisionist versions of it all over the net. In the end, who you chose to believe depends on your biases/preferences.

I always get this mental picture of Commander_Spock on a street corner handing out leaflets shouting the end is near- repent! Repent your evil ways and install OS2/Warp today!
by Commander_Spock May 5, 2009 3:01 PM PDT
One might guess "Vegaman_Dan"! That; with the "PICNIC" already being canceled; and, the "PINK SLIPS" already being "maxed out" sooooooooooooo.................. early; then, only the unwise would not think "who is next! Ya know, there was/are companies by the names of WorldCom, Enron, "Chrysler", Ford, GM et al; and, there is one, just two words that Commander_Spock and Crew will continue preach about; and, those two words are - "International Economics"! Do ya think that the "Dwellers On The Redmond Campus" have these two words on their "Radar Screens" as yet!!!

"One (The Dan) To Beam Up (For Make Over) - Scotty!

you can upgrade win7 beta to rc. just modify the cversion.ini file from 7077 to 7000 (from the sources dir).

If your cversion.ini file read "7077" you got the wrong version, it should be 7100! Go and download directly from Microsoft and avoid torrents.
by macuenca May 5, 2009 8:17 AM PDT
Pay no mind. I was wrong, just downloaded my copy directly from Microsoft and cversion.ini says:

[HostBuild]
MinClient=7077.0
MinServer=7000.0

I am a disappointed by Vista in a way. Even though the graphics are cool, it does a really poor job with housekeeping stuff. For instance, I can't get it to remember the window size in Windows Explorer. This may be a silly reason to dislike the thing, but it is very irritating. :-)

I hear that Windows 7 is similar to Vista. I really hope they fixed all the annoying things in Vista. I will probably hold off on the upgrade until the OS "matures"

House keeping?
- Improved Defragger that runs in the background as a low priority task.
- Improved memory management with better utilization (no idle memory)
- Instant Search, Stacks, Tagging
- Previous Versions (file shadow copy)
- Complete PC Backup
- Parental Controls

Poor job of house keeping? Sounds like you are just making disparaging remarks about an OS you don't use.
by MPB May 4, 2009 11:36 PM PDT
Arrr Mr. Dee
Most of those things you mentioned is why people hate vista. Because they don't work properly. hence 'poor house keeping'.
by rapier1 May 5, 2009 8:45 AM PDT
Umm, pretty much all of the things Dee mentioned *do* work properly. What freaked some people out is that they didn't understand what was happening with their system. The background defragging led some people to think that the drives were thrashing. The way Vista preloads portions of applications led some people to think it was wasting memory. File shadow copy also works great. It has saved my ass a few times.
by mahurshi May 5, 2009 9:39 AM PDT
@ Mr. Dee

I was using Vista when I typed that comment. I am not sure where you got the info/what made you assume that I do not use Vista.

Secondly, I am assuming you don't have anything to say about its poor house keeping with regards to not being able to remember the Window sizes.
by rapier1 May 5, 2009 10:27 AM PDT
As an aside, my install of vista has no problem remembering the last window size of any application.
by mahurshi May 5, 2009 8:29 PM PDT
@rapier1

Did it work out of the box? I am surprised to hear that it worked fine in your case. Did you have to tinker with it?

A quick google on the topic shows a few thousand links talking about how it didn't work for many people:
http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=vista+remember+window+size&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&oq=vista+remember+win&fp=KqtEvp1-d7s
by dxrocker69 May 10, 2009 3:31 AM PDT
Huh? Vista remembers all windows sizes... even after shutdown.
I don't know what the hell you are talking about?
by patchman10 May 5, 2009 1:45 AM PDT
My 2 Cents: Installed 32 &64 bit on desktop and wifes older hp laptop..Install time is very short .
At first seems simplistic,...... but then bam! you start looking deeper (Libraries ,WMP streaming ,UPNP ,...Jump list ...Games managment folder, WMC are great.

Homegroup is very well done .Never has networking computers been so simple ....Word pad and paint look better than ever..Downloaded live mesh , photo gallery, and other live services . Everything seems very snappy and well laid out. UAC is never in the way. only when needed.

Installed old and new programs & games to test so far ,no problems. Took a couple of reboots and it found every single driver.Installed New Prince Of Persia, TR Underworld, Playing witcher right now and the classic the undying flawlessly,,,

Themes really rock .....Taskbar is very nice , 5 or 6 windows , couple programs open and taskbar is always uncluttered. docking windows to side effortlessly.......Tweak it to work for you..Many option available.

IE8 runs great on win 7.... I use FF but IE8 on win 7 right now is just as good, for me at least .
After initial install and updates plus any must utilities we made a system image with backup and restore option... that is very cool.

Our Xp days are over.....After running 7 almost a week we will not be going back to XP.....Virtual pc 2007 in case i need it. Plus u can use this beta for at least a year if you wanted...But if price is right , Hoping for family pack pricing like office 2007....$99-149 for 3 license. we will buy it asap.....Its that good...Take Care

Have installed the beta on a moderately old-spec hp nc6220. Nifty to say the least, but running some stuffs seems slower, others, fast. Overall, I can't wait to get my hand on the RC and test it out on my rambus system using since 2000 (after I get hold of a larger pata harddisk).

To those who bash around other OSes, be catholic, not partisan. I like the all 3 flavours as each serves different purposes IMO. You'll like some, you'll hate some.
