Microsoft pulls plug on campus bar

by Ina Fried

With the economy in the tank, Microsoft has decided not to let its workers follow.

The software maker has confirmed it has canceled plans to have a bar as part of an expansion of its Redmond campus.

The pub, which had been planned for more than a year, was to be part of a collection of restaurants and stores that were due to open next week as part of the company's new headquarters for its Entertainment and Devices unit. Spokesman Lou Gellos confirmed the company recently decided to pull the plug.

"We had to take another look at this," Gellos said. "We are sensitive to the business environment and that meant not having a pub."

In January, Microsoft made the company's first-ever companywide layoffs and has said it is cutting as many as 5,000 jobs amid the broad economic downturn. The company has also been cutting vendors, travel, and other expenses as it looks to trim costs.

The bar was planned for "The Commons," a central area in the center of the Entertainment and Devices campus. Although the bar won't open, the area will still feature a collection of popular Pacific Northwest eateries as well as various cell phone shops, a salon, and other outlets.

The Commons is surrounded by four buildings for the entertainment unit, one of which is already occupied and another that is due to be filled in the next week or so. By mid-July, Microsoft expects all four buildings to be occupied, Gellos said.

Word that Microsoft kicked the keg came earlier on Friday from a report on Seattle-area tech site TechFlash. The owner of the proposed pub told TechFlash he was stunned by the news, which came via a letter from Microsoft. The bar, which was due to open on Monday, already had been outfitted with its beer taps, and workers had been hired.

Did you even read the article?

Is there anyone above the age of 13 who still thinks the joke misspelling Microsoft, or Apple, or any other company is actually funny or relevant? It's juvenile and everything else you say, however poignant it may be, just ends up being ignored. You might as well not even post.
by myles taylor April 11, 2009 7:36 AM PDT
of course not. They saw Microsoft (you can insert Apple in there as well) and they instantly jumped in flaming. you don't need to read the article to do that.

Misspelling Microsoft is funny when you are talking about putting a bar on campus.

Campus will have a Starbucks there which will charge as much for coffee as a bar does for drinks!!!

Every Microsoft kitchenette has two automated Starbucks kiosk machines installed already.

Microsoft gives free beverages of both Coke *and* Pepsi products, sparking waters, juices, milk and chocolate milk, etc. The hot chocolate is excellent.

Even shills get free drinks?
by bwrobertson2 April 11, 2009 12:05 PM PDT
That's about as cool as prohibitionary Microsoft gets.
by Vegaman_Dan April 11, 2009 10:58 PM PDT
Anyone who is on campus can have the free drinks, even you, Pentest. You just have to open the cooler and reach in.

MS strikes again - another partner screwed over. They just cancel the lease at the last minute. No wonder everyone sues them. I guess this guy should have read the fine print.

Before you go around classifying a group of people you don't even know as evil or devils maybe you should take look in the mirror and think about your attitude. Your hypocritical, cynical, self-righteous comments don't exactly make you the kind of person anyone would want to deal with. Go back to your little hole and keep pretending your important. Moron.
by ralfthedog April 11, 2009 8:19 AM PDT
SlimGem is correct. Microsoft and Walmart are two companies that will find a way to put you out of business if you partner with them. The one exception with Microsoft is agreeing to sell their software. Anything else and you will loose your shirt.

@ viper396,

"Your hypocritical, cynical, self-righteous comments don't exactly make you the kind of person anyone would want to deal with."

You are right and I apologize. I promise to change my evil ways and hopefully I can transform myself into a person as intelligent and kind as you. Thanks for your insight.

In the meantime, I would suggest that you study the history of MicroSoft, because you apparently don't know jack about the subject.

@SlimGem:

"In the meantime, I would suggest that you study the history of MicroSoft, because you apparently don't know jack about the subject. "

You might want to share that same study material that you are suggesting for based upon your own comments, you do not appear to have a fundamental comprehension of the subject matter yourself.

@ Vegaman_Dan,

Unless you have just immigrated from another planet, you should have heard about some of these things. If not, please butt-out of the conversation.

That's just sad...but even the mere fact that they might have had a bar, at work, does make me a tad jealous. I don't drink much at all, (not just saying that for comments, I really don't. I've had the same 6 pack in the fridge since Christmas time) but, there's days when you have a bad show, or a really good one, where having a beer with your producer during the post-show pow-wow would be appropriate.

Have any of you listened to the news for the past three days? A Major League Baseball player was killed by a drunk driver after a game. Do you seriously think Microsoft or any other company is going to allow a bar on its property and risk one of its employees having one too many and then getting behind the wheel and killing someone?

Oh please, you bleeding heart! So just because some MLB player got killed, now bars and consumers of alcohol (responsible or otherwise) should be vilified? I don't think so. This politically correct nonsense needs to stop. Next you're going to want to ban cars because they kill people.
by esteven4 April 11, 2009 8:01 AM PDT
How is that any different than any normal bar? I assume the bartender will treat people exactly the same at a bar on Microsoft's campus as they would a hundred feet down the road. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that they'd be even more responsible because of where they are.

People are killed by drunk drivers every day... it's unfortunate, but it's true.
by notgonnatellya April 11, 2009 6:40 PM PDT
Yawn. Twas a time when Nortel served bear at group information sessions (only when someone from Canada came down). As I uderstand it, the Ottawa cafeteria sold bear during lunch. I wouldn't partake at lunch (already get tired from food...bear would be too much), but for a 4pm meeting, it was a nice touch....until some schmuck complained about it, much like you are here, and it was gone. There'd never been an incident. Nobody was getting drunk, but it could have happened....odds are the complainer didn't drink at all and found it offensive....Dallas is still in the Bible Belt.
by this1! April 11, 2009 9:31 PM PDT
seriously, f*** you trboyden, i dont know you, or anything about you. But your sarcastic attitude to a good point makes you a f***. Drunk driving is a HUGE problem. and esteven4, if it wasnt for Eisenhower pushing the the highway over other more public means of transportation our country wouldn't be completely dependant on foreign oil, and our government damn near completely run by automobile industry lobbyists...

Our society has become way too dependent on the automobile, its not a right, its a luxury. It's a joke how easily anyone can get a drivers license. The car is a towel, a power tool, and for anyone that has ever taken a shop class you should know this: if your not absolutely scared of every power tool in the workshop, you better get the hell out of there before you kill yourself or anyone else, because every power tool in there has the ability to seriously injure and or kill you or others. When you let anyone behind a the steering wheel of a car, you might as well hand them a gun, and see how much discretion they use when handling that. Thats the amount of reasoning and judgement that you should use when operating a car, and too many people don't get that.
by trboyden April 12, 2009 9:22 AM PDT
@this1!

So basically you are advocating that because everything in the world is dangerous, we should all just live in our separate little bubbles in the name of national, public, or personal security? One of our founding fathers had this to say to people just like you:

?He who trades liberty for security deserves neither and will lose both.? - Thomas Jefferson

If you want to live in a "let the government (or corporate overlords) determine what's best for us" kind of country, move to Iran. I have plenty of sympathy for victims, but their memories should not be abused for the sake of taking away our god given liberties, including the pursuit of happiness (whatever legal form that may take for someone).
by glow-in-the-dark April 13, 2009 12:12 PM PDT
Not MS' responsibility. Observation: as no reason has been formally stated for the cancellation we cannot make *any* assumptions - you will not get past speculation.

The only thing you can do is look at past behaviour, and that gives you a simple, very consistent history of behaviour that should make anyone with half a brain think twice about partnering with MS.
by willdryden April 13, 2009 11:24 PM PDT
notgonnatellya - I see no problem serving bear any where you can get it. It's hard to find in Texas. Beer is different issue. Bear is an animal - you know - large, furry, long teath, hibernates in the winter. Beer is an alcoholic beverage that makes people do stuip things when they drink too much.

Supprised no one else noticed that in 2 days.

That is funny, too bad they rather take tax payers recovery money to build a personal bridge from their parking lot to M$*** campus, like they do not have money!! Mean while a public traffic bridge down the road is falling part and is not getting one cent to replace it. SCREW M$!!!!!

Perhaps you're not familar with that bridge story. Microsoft is kicking half of the money for that bridge that is a public road. Since when does private enterprise normally pay for bridges? They don't have to do that, but they are. That bridge will relieve congestion on the other brige in the area. Microsoft isn't the only company in the area... there are several well known companies that use those roads... but have you heard of them kicking in any money?
by resident123 April 13, 2009 9:54 AM PDT
MS is contributing $25M in private funds towards the cost of the public bridge. It is the city of Redmond that is getting $11M in Stimulus funds to cover the remaining cost of the bridge. There is a fire station one on side of the 520 freeway (paid for by MS) which the bridge crosses And on the other side of that new public bridge are other companies besides MS, private residences and a transit station (also paid for by MS). And the bridge down the road is not down the road (WA is a big state) that bridge is not in the city of Redmond. You shouldn't get your news from opensource blogs. Name other companies who are contributing private funds towards public works projects?
by lonestarState April 11, 2009 7:35 AM PDT
Pints are recession proof, where as coffee is the last thing someone would drink during a freaking depression. Bad call on Microsoft's side. I would rather pay $6 bucks a pint of beer, than $3.00 for some lame Starbucks latte. Beer is made with dignity, where as coffee is brought to us by a 3rd world country being exploited for there coffee beans. There is no shame in the coffee industry. Screw coffee and everything it stands for. A Pint a day keeps the doctor away!

They made a wrong choice for this.
Now more than ever to have a place to drink to parlay fears about the economy and to sit and chat and talk.

Not building the bar confirms that the economy will get worse and not better. So MS is not placing any bets and plays the fail card HARD.
