Bill Gates' new venture: A think tank?

Former Seattle Post-Intelligencer reporter Todd Bishop launched his new Web site on Wednesday with an interesting post on what Bill Gates is up to.

BGC3's logo, as filed with the Trademark Office.

The software icon and philanthropist is affiliated with something called BGC3, essentially the name given to Gates' non-Microsoft, non-foundation office. Bishop's source says it's not a commercial venture, while the company's trademark application covers "think tank services."

The company applied for a trademark on the BGC3 name and a C3 logo on September 29. Just what the company plans to do with that trademark remains to be seen.

Gates told CNET News as he was retiring from full-time Microsoft work in June that he planned to open a separate office, though at the time, he didn't detail plans for a new company.

The BGC3 report marks a good start for Bishop, whose TechFlash site officially launched Wednesday. Bishop and John Cook both left the Seattle P-I last month to set up the new site, which is backed by the Puget Sound Business Journal.

Great, a new think tank that promises to "embrace, extend and extinguish" intelligent thought.

One would hope that a think tank would "think different".

On the other hand BG is "super-enthused about what [Windows 7] will do in lots of ways".

'Philosophers more learned than wise
Hunt Science down in butterflies.'
Poet guys more 'wise' than learned
Cut Science down, unconcerned.

Hi, I'm the greatest scientific, medical, and cinematic genius in the history of the world. I know what love is as Forrest Gump and a world famous scientist. Without exaggeration and you can prove it yourself protocols, I've got an instant cure for crime, cures for autoimmune disease and cancer, even an ethical 'cure' for homosexuality. I recommended Stevie Spielberg invest in Microsoft back in the mid-eighties, for instance, but I also got him started back in 1972. I wrote a little book about it. Hillary's Angel available on google books. Also, google 'Human pheromones' and my name. I have elucidated the specific mechanism for atherosclerosis, the goo that kills about 55% of us? I've cut the crime rate here in my home town of Tampa by 50%, but unfunded and unrecognized, it's not easy out here among the natives. I've published three peer-reviewed medical journal articles, been on BBC-TV, CBC-TV, etc. So far I've made about $1,500.00 lifetime on my chosen profession. (Poverty is great for creativity, believe you me!) I would love to participate in Mr. Gate's think-tank. Actually, I seem to be one of the few people with a brain at all in this country.
Of course, not all of being super-intelligent is good news. As a kid, I dabbled in politics (personally starting the careers of both Clintons, George W.Bush, Ann Richards, Ron Kirk, Robert Reich, and guiding Julian Bond and Zell Miller). I came up with the scenario for 9-11 for M. Knight Shamilan's friends back in 1997 (oops). I've already figured out devices to stop hurricane damage, to conduct charges ohm-free at room temperature, end global warming & lots of other cool stuff. For computers I invented the 'port-doubler' for laptops (and just gave it to Zenith).

I think this is a plan to start the next MSFT. The guy is restless -- he is too young to just sit back and count his money, and has a history of doing big things.

I think that this think tank is Bill Gates' way of giving back to the community. It is a way he can brainstorm ideas with younger minds and mentor them to create new technology even if it is open sourced.

Intellectual Property gets in the way of competition, we all know that from Microsoft holding on to Windows IP and suing other companies, Apple has done that as well. But what if the IP was licensed in exchange for 10% of the profits from the technology the company creates that is based on that IP? That could be a way for a company to earn money on IP by licensing it out to other companies in exchange for a share of the profits from that technology. The same can be done with prescription medication.

All Microsoft or Apple need do is license their undocumented API calls to another company to create competition and then in turn when that competition creates something better it can license it back to Microsoft and Apple.

The BGC3 organization is separate from Microsoft in order to create new competition and invent and innovate new technology. Microsoft has become stale as has Apple, and really don't have much competition. But the Amiga, Inc and AmigaOS 4.1 are on the rise as is the AROS open source version of AmigaOS 3.1 to try and compete with Microsoft and Apple. Linux also is getting more user friendly to compete. HaikuOS and ReactOS are developing nicely but it will be years before they are ready.

Maybe BGC3 can help those competitors and give something back to the community?

Bill Gates Computer Community Company? Maybe it is more like the Wheels Of Zeus by Steven Wozniak and it is an educational company teaching people to become better computer skilled and better innovators?

The following quote is from "The Atlas of Cyberspace" .... About the book, here... http://www.kitchin.org/atlas/about.html. It got me Thinking as IT does.

"It may well be the case that the process of mapping may actually change what it seeks to augment, altering the very nature of the medium involved." ..... Yes, it does, for the Process is a Live DynamICQ

TogetherinParis,

"I came up with the scenario for 9-11 for M. Knight Shamilan's friends back in 1997 (oops)." .... a Junk Movie Script ..... the Best of Sub-Prime? How are you finding getting work these days? One can now consider oneself Miranda-ised after that earlier faux-pas, for it is of course, Melinda partnering Bill in his Foundation and Creations.

I must have been miles away when I thought/wrote/missed that. Sorry. It will not happen again. :-)
