The original iPad may seem a bit like of a dinosaur nowadays, but, well, it's still an iPad. Big screen. Endless apps. iTunes ecosystem. All good.
Consequently, this may sell out very quickly, so I'm going to toss in an extra bonus deal just in case. But as of around 8:45 a.m. ET, they were in stock -- and a company rep told me they have a generous supply.
Can you believe it's been only three years since the iPad made its debut? And it all started with this guy, then a $499 curiosity. Now, at $149, it's a steal.
There's little I can tell you about it you don't already know. With just 16GB of storage, it may prove limiting for folks who like to stuff their tablets with music and video. But this would be perfect for kids, who can carry around an endless supply of Dr. Seuss e-books, learning apps, and Angry Birds games.
Unlike the refurbs you get from Apple, this one comes with only a 90-day warranty. I can't object too strongly; the same is true of most non-Apple refurbished tablets.
Another consideration: Delivery could take 2-3 weeks. Most of the things I've ordered from DailySteals have arrived much sooner, but I've gotten an earful from buyers who waited even longer. Don't expect this to arrive in a few days, Amazon Prime-style, and you won't be disappointed.
It may lack cameras, a Retina screen, and a state-of-the-art processor, but the original iPad is still a very capable tablet -- and awfully attractive at this price. Your thoughts?
Bonus deal: Need a dad/grad gift? Here's a tablet of another stripe: Until tomorrow, and while supplies last, Best Buy has the Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch e-reader for $49.99 shipped (plus tax). It's new, not refurbished, and widely regarded as one of the best touch-screen e-readers you can buy.
Bonus deal No. 2: Game time! And I do mean time, which you're going to need a lot of: From now through Sunday at 1 p.m. PT, you can play Sid Meier's Civilization V for free on Steam. And if you decide you like it, you can buy it outright for $7.49. Regular price: $29.99. Even better, get the Gold Edition for $12.49, down from the usual $49.99.
