Killer deals on BlackBerry, Droid, and Palm Pixi

In the market for a new phone? You picked the right weekend to go shopping. I've got three pretty smokin' deals--something for everyone. Check 'em out:

• BlackBerry From November 14 to 20, Wal-Mart is offering a $100 gift card when you buy a BlackBerry. Eligible models include the AT&T Curve 8310, T-Mobile Pearl 8120, Sprint Curve 8330, and Verizon Storm 2. Given that some models are actually free (with two-year contract and activation, natch), you actually stand to make $100 on the deal. My buddy Dave over at Business Hacks has more details.

• Droid Forget that $149.99 deal on the Motorola Droid. From now until midnight, November 16, Overstock is offering the Droid for $119.99 shipped (plus activation and the obligatory two-year Verizon contract). Alternately, you can get the HTC Eris for just $19.99.

• Palm Pixi Normally $99.99 with a two-year Sprint contract, the Palm Pixi is available from Wirefly for just $24.99. (Actually, it will be available as of midnight Saturday.) If you've read any reviews of the new phone, you know it's pretty much a non-slider version of the Palm Pre. It also lacks Wi-Fi for some crazy reason. (What is it with Palm and Wi-Fi?!)

OK, phone fans, there you have it. My question for you: Will you pull the trigger on any of these deals? If so, which one(s)?

The following products mentioned are available.

Unfortunately, the $120 price for the Droid at Overstock is for new customers. They've priced the Droid for $180 for existing Verizon customers who extend their contract...

Yes, I just found this out. I wonder if the $150 deal with Wirefly is still good?
by Steyr44 November 14, 2009 1:48 PM PST
The deal for Wirefly is 149.99 even if you're extending your contract. Kinda dissapointed that Overstock rasied their prices so dramatically for a contract extension.

Again, no love for loyal customers! The one's already in the family should always get the best deals. When will the execs get the idea that acquirinf new customers is nice, but retaining current customers is even better!

Hello, I get to read all of your e-mails, but I live in Canada and we don't have the phone carriers that your talking about. Do you know of any deals in Canada?

Thanks, Dwayne

Yes, I want a Samsung Blackjack that will work in Canada without a data plan.

I just called to get the new Droid. After a looooong debate with the rep, I was told that I could get the thing for $180 because I have an existing wireless account (with 2 phones and a data card, even though only 1 phone is still under contract). Conversely, I can get the $120 deal if I am willing to change numbers. He claims I can only keep my existing numbers if I switch to a different carrier. I am also a Club O member at Overstock.com, so technically that should give me free shipping and an additional discount. I do feel something isn't right with this deal. PC

The sales representative probably makes a higher tier of commission on activating a new line than extending a current contract. When he says that you would switch numbers he is really trying to get you to activate a brand new line - and he would cancel out your old line (the old phone number.) Other than getting a new phone number it wouldn't really affect you but he could get fired for that.

I struggled to get my deal at BB (they ruined my family plan that was in existance and luckily Verizon fixed it a few days later restoring all the lines effected)

I got my activation waived. So, the Overstock deal is really just saving....40ish dollars subtracting the activation fee away from $200 dollars. Great for someone who hasn't bought it yet, but, not enough for me ot squirm my way out of it

Like most of these Wirefly deals are only good for NEW customers. they don't even have an option to port over your old number as far as I can see. Does anyone know if wirefly lets you keep your old number?

On the side, there are options for renewing your contract, adding a line, or for straight retail pricing. All you have to do is click the renew option to see the new pricing. Also, if you're just extending your contract, doesn't that mean you're still on the same line?
by DisDudeIsFly November 14, 2009 12:35 PM PST
Actually upgrade deals on Wirefly are good also. They have no rebates on the site and often their prices are better than carrier prices even after their mail in rebate. You could upgrade and get a Droid for 149.99 for instance. That's 50 bucks less than Verizon or another retailer. All instant no mail in

Hell no. I am almost out of my two year contract with AT&T. No more contracts for me. Forget the subsidy pricing. I travel a lot and need a good quality phone on a good quality network and the freedom to go global and pick my carrier overseas.

Hmm... here's a dumb question: how would overstock know if you're new to vzw or not? New customers get the Eris for 19.99, but existing users for 79.99? I just looked at the Eris last week and I am pretty sure it is my next phone to replace my BB pearl 8130 (thank god!). I would LOVE to get it for just 19.99.

Thanks

Oh, I see - they make you sign up for stuff right there... clever.. clever.
by ranger1701 November 14, 2009 9:26 PM PST
You can't seriously be saying Wirefly. You are a serious loser if you deal with Wirefly. Free porn sites have more credibility than Wirefly. They charge extra fees if you change your plan, if you have a family share. I was trying to buy the Droid on a ready to upgrade Verizon Family share and the web site wouldn't allow me up upgarde the single eligible line to up upgrade. The advertised price was 150, unitl I called them and was told it was 275 with no rebate. Verizon was 199 after an 100 rebale. Wirefly is a rip off.

Although Pixi has more storage memory than my Treo 680, I would prefer Palm Pre and recommend it for travelers.

Even at under 30 dollars, the Pre is a much better option than the Pixi, IMHO.

This deal isn't any different than what RIM is offering when you go to a Verizon store. If any particular store wants to stand out, they should offer more than what the competition is offering.

I'm planning on going with WalMart's new prepaid option when my contract is up. They have an unlimited minutes/text/data plan for $45/month with no contracts ($45 prepaid card you buy each month). That is a crapload less than I'm paying. There's also a $30/month option for 1000min/text 30mb data. They don't have new hot phones, but hey, I'm a cheapskate.

Rick:

I've been following your posts since I found it a few months back through Digg. Since then, I've been checking everyday for deals and would like to thank you for everything. I took the overstock.com price to Best Buy and was able to get the Motorola Droid (and a much needed Verizon phone) for 120 + tax in person. Although I could have saved the extra 6 or so % by getting it online, it was nice to get it in person. This has been by far the best deal I have cashed in on so far (aside from the 5 dollar laptop HD enclosure).

Keep up the good work!

With the droid, as with the iphone, you are required to pay an additional $39.99 for the wireless service.
For someone who would only use it occasionally, if at all, is there a way to get out of that requirement?

Apparently overstock.com has sold enough android phones as they are now priced at the $149 and $49 as found on other websites. Kind of disappointing as they stated that the sale would continue unitl midnight tonight, and I had planned on ordering one of each later this evening. Oh well, guess I'll just buy from a more familiar source for the same price now.

i ordered the 2 droids @119 each from the cnet cheapskate link and added the NCOA mobile device coverage at $50 each while on the phone with india sales center. after googling NCOA they may be bad news.... any input appreciated -- I can probably cancel NCOA as I havent yet authorized the sale. following is the message I sent to NCOA

"I am considering purchasing 2 new cell phones and am interested in
covering them for damage or loss.

Can you give me a synopsis of your coverage? (what is and isn't covered
and what limits for the $50 annual payment. the new droid phones are
$550-600)

I also seem to see a lot of negative comments about companies in your
business. can you point out any positive comments about your company and
service?"

hmmm, maybe I should wait for this in our market. There's no good purchasing online here. It could be sabotage by post men courier.
