Buy World of Goo (PC/Mac/Linux) for whatever price you want

Here's a little Friday fun for all you game fans: From now until Oct. 25, the insanely popular puzzle game World of Goo is on sale--and you get to name the price.

It normally sells for $20, but in honor of its first birthday, developer 2D Boy decided to run a little experiment. (Check out the results on the company's blog. Very interesting stuff.)

Basically, when you click the Get It button, you're whisked to a PayPal page where you specify your "donation" amount. (No PayPal account? Click the "continue" link on the left side to use a credit card.)

So, what'll it be? A penny? A five-spot? A sawbuck? If you're honestly not sure what the game is worth, download the demo before you pick a number. World of Goo is available for Windows, Mac, and even Linux systems.

I'll admit I wasn't familiar with the game when I heard about this promotion, but it's without a doubt one of the cutest, weirdest, and most inventive puzzles I've ever played. You don't have to take my word: GameSpot awarded it a 9.0, as did several thousand readers.

I'm not going to reveal what I paid for it, as I don't want to influence anyone one way or the other. But I did pay for it--and definitely more than a penny.

How about you? Are you going to get your Goo on? If so, what's a fair price? (And how much did you actually pay?) Let's hear from you in the comments.

Does it count if you post a deal that one of your subscribers left in a comment on a previous deal?!?

j/k..we can all use a little help now and then and by the way, huge fan of your blog. Keep up the good work.

FYI- I paid $0.99 for the game because I had no idea what it was about. Figured it would be as entertaining as buying a song from iTunes. To be honest, I've played it for an hour, and it's really not that entertaining for me. I had more fun with the free Screaming Narwhal game you posted a while back although I lost interest in it. I guess I'm done with my gaming phase and would rather just be a couch potato and not use my brain if possible.

This really tests the moral fiber of cheapskate nation doesn't it?!

I think pay-what-you-want is a very interesting system and is a great idea for a one day sale. It would be cool to see the results of the donations if they choose to release them.

Game looks cool, can't wait to check it out. I donated $2. haha, cheapskate!

I got this earlier in the week and payed $0.50. I know...pretty cheap eh? The game is outstanding. I stayed up way too late playing it that night and couldn't quit. The background music is very cool too...very Danny Elfman-esque. I would say it is easily worth at least $5. Don't let this deal get away!

This is a fantastic puzzle solving game for any age. The goal of the game is to get from one location to another (vacuum tube exit). It starts out easy and gets harder, the game does not come with any instructions. You learn by doing, it's very addicting and entertaining. This game is a must buy and I can't speak highly enough of it. I purchased it about a year ago (in store) and I'm watching and waiting for the next installment.

I downloaded the Demo version about 6 months ago for free and loved it. I have been meaning to but it for myself ever since, and I did by a copy of it for my Mother (who loves these simple pc games) for her birthday. Normally Retails in the store for about $20.00 but the copy I bought at the time I found on sale somewhere for like $15.00. Amazon has it I think for $14.00 now. I think $20.00 is too much, but anywhere between $8.00 - $15.00 is about right

It is a pretty fun game. I will say some levels get kind of hard, even in the Demo version. I do have to say the music and graphics are some of the best parts.

Anyway, when I saw this pay what you want a few days ago in one of the comments I thought it was awesome and am going to dowload it tonight or tomorrow. I plan on paying $8.00 since that is the lower end of what I think it is worth.

I loved World of Goo. Picked it up during a Steam sale for $5 (love love love Steam). It's a great game if you like puzzles at all. Picked up another $5 for a friend because it rocks and I want to support the developers. Seriously, you can't go wrong with a pay what you want model. Buy it!

Yes, belated thanks to whoever tipped me off about this in the comments a few days ago. I lost track of it or would have given proper credit! :)

Ethical question: Is it fair to take a copy of the game for free-or-near-free if I have already paid for it full price on the Wii?

I'd seen it on the PC on sale for $5 -- I think $3-5 would be fair....my 2c

Some are paying that and didn't get in on the Wii to begin with.

I think I'll pay 99 cents for it, and if I like it I will donate more. I want to support the developer if the game is good!

I dropped $7 on it -- I had previously played 2-3 levels on the game and gave it to my dad. He loved it so I went back and started playing it. Turned out to be a great game.

I had seen it on Steam for $5 a while back...so I figured that since 2 people were playing it I'd drop a little more.

Wish they could find a way to run this promotion for the Wii version!

I paid 20$ (14.40?) for this game, before this promotion, and I think it's worth every cent. Besides being very entertaining, it's probably one of the few games done right for Linux (they provide ready-made rpm and deb packages).

I already have it on Steam after paying 30 dollars for 10 or so indie games. I wanted Crayon Physics and Audio Surf which were 20 and 10 respectively and I got World of Goo, Braid, Blueberry Garden, Everyday Shooter, Gish, Darwinia, the Path and I think that's it.

It has been $5 on Steam (awesome!!!) and is $15 regular on the Wii. I think I'll pay around $5 just to put it on my Linux Machine.

I got it as part of my Macheist last year and it's definitely worth $20! Amazing game. If you're going to do more than just play around with the first few levels, dish out the $20. Given that that's less than the price of two movies tickets at some theaters and you'll get more enjoyment and entertainment out of it, I'd say it's well worth it.

Ha! I was wondering where the heck I've seen this before. I bought the Macheist bundle played Goo for a short spell said "fun" and never looked at it again. I was about to buy another Mac version...Now I can see about Linux and Windoze.

Dug it up on my Mac. It had "dissapeared" Mac installs are not as user friendly as some would lead you to believe.

One thing they will get is a little bit of an idea of how much they would sell at the various prices.
