Paragon's robust partition-management software is available free, but only for today.

Normally $39.95, Paragon Software's Partition Manager 10.0 Personal can be yours absolutely free. Today only. From software-freebie site Giveaway of the Day.

If you haven't visited the site before, here's how it works: You've got until midnight tonight (ET) to download and install the software. Other than that, there are absolutely no strings attached.

Well, OK, one "string" is that if you ever need to reinstall the software, you're outta luck. Its setup/registration process is tied to the date. But, hey, keep in mind you're getting a $40 app free of charge. You gonna gripe about that tiny gotcha?

True to its name, Partition Manager provides tools for partitioning your hard drive(s). That means you could have, say, Windows XP running on one partition and Windows 7 on another (a great solution for folks who want to migrate to the new OS gradually rather than all at once).

The software also features drive-optimization and -defragmentation tools, a boot fixer, a basic backup wizard, and a recovery-CD option.

I haven't found many reviews of Partition Manager 10.0 Personal, but over at Amazon it averages 4.5 stars out of 5, and 81% of users on the GotD site gave it a thumbs-up--a pretty high percentage compared with most freebies.

The program runs on Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7. There's a special 64-bit version available (download), which you should definitely choose if you're running a 64-bit OS.

Obviously this isn't a utility everybody needs, but if you have even the slightest interest in partitioning your hard drive, it's a no-brainer: grab it.

Oh, one other thing: be sure to read the readme file for installation/registration instructions! I'm going to make fun of anybody who says "This isn't the full version, it's only a trial, wah wah!" :) Basically, you have to supply an e-mail address to get the software activated.

One OTHER other thing... I just discovered that the whole installation process is pretty goofy. After extracting and running the downloaded Setup file, you must then manually run the actual Partition Manager installer, which by default gets extracted to your C drive's root directory. When you do that, click the Get Free Serial button and go from there.

Grrr. Well, at least it's still free, right?

This "offer" sucks... no upgrades for crippleware. Sounds like mass beta testing to me. I pass.

Oh, wait... here's a free Linux Live CD that does the same thing:

I'm almost certain you have until 3am to download activate the software.

Plus, I've tried to resize my partitions using Paragon, let it run overnight, had it freeze halfway through resizing at about 47%, and had to reformat my entire computer. Beware - if this glitches out, your entire OS is shot!

I assume you mean 3am eastern. There is a 'clock' on the site that at ~ 11am Eastern says you have 16 more hours so I bet you are right Vtag

The download didn't complete...said connection to server reset. Not going to try again, based on other comments.

Is this program better than Acronis Disk Director? I find Acronis a wonderful program and you can partition in real time under Windows, and just require a restart to apply the changes and such. Wonder if this "freeware" partitioner is like this one?

Totally bogus post this is a prime example of crapware if you want a quality partion manager use Acronis Disk Director or Norton Ghost and it's related partition tools. This product offering is a tar pit.

What a sham the 64 bit version is, it still installed as a 32 bit program, this is the directory it installed too:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Paragon Software\Partition Manager 10.0 Personal

which means it's a 32 bit program that won't take advantage of the greater memory or processing threads that most current and all future computers are capable of. No wonder why they gave it away, it's definitely worth what we're paying for.

Norton's SONAR flagged the setup file as a "security risk" and deleted it. Veeeeeery nice...
