Get a 2nd-gen iPod Touch for $149

Looking to get a jump-start on your holiday shopping? Here's a can't-miss gift: Apple has the refurbished 2nd-generation iPod Touch (8GB) for $149 with free shipping.

It wasn't too long ago that first-gen refurbs were selling for more than that, so this is a decidedly sweet deal.

What can I tell you about the Touch you don't already know? It's an iPhone without the phone--though if you plug in a headset and use an app like Fring or Skype, it can do a damn fine impression of one.

As I've mentioned before, Apple's refurbs are usually indistinguishable from new units, right down to the same bundled accessories and one-year warranty. The only real difference: They come in a brown cardboard box instead of the flashy plastic one.

My daughter has this exact Touch, and she looooves it. And what's not to love? Music, videos, games, apps, Internet--no wonder CNET awarded it 4.5 stars out of 5 and an Editors' Choice.

The Apple Store has been known to sell out of certain refurbished models, so if you want one of these, I'd act fast.

Bonus deal: Need an HDMI cable? Buy.com has a Belkin 12-footer for $7.99 after rebate--plus the awesome, awesome "Planet Earth Vol. 1" on Blu-ray.

Bonus deal #2: What's better than a Nintendo Wii for $199? How about a Wii for $199 and a free game? That's the deal over at eToys, where you'll get the console and "Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games" for $199.99 shipped. (Add the Wii to your cart; the game gets added automatically.)

Not bad considering the warranty direct from apple. I've seen used 8gb models go for around $99 on craigslist.

Yeah, noticed this deal about a week ago. The funny thing is that this is cheaper than many are going for on Ebay. Ebay didn't experience the price drop it normally does after a new generation is released because... the "3rd" gen model is no different from the 2nd in any way. Nice update, Apple. No mic, no camera= No thanks.

Whats better than a Wii for $199 with a free game? Maybe one one with free shipping, Wii sports and a $25 giftcard? Whats better than a refurb IPod touch for $149,? how about a NEW Zune HD (16GB) for $189? Seek and ye shall find

I have to disagree: the Zune HD is nice, but it's not nearly as versatile as the Touch.
by ewgdsg September 28, 2009 8:48 AM PDT
uhh dude the 16gb Zune HD is $229

Being a true cheapskate I won't buy either. After putting Rockbox on my old sansa ($40) I'm happy as can be.

@rick. If you are going for apps and utils, then the touch is king. There is no denying this. Different people have different tastes. The iPod touch has more apps available, but the main reason to pick a Zune is that it produces higher sound quality (don't take my word, check for yourself) and has features that others may want :
Wifi streaming of any song in the Zune Pass library. Automated DJs that produce stations from the huge streaming library that is far superior to Pandora's (again check the reviews for yourself),
Subscription music for $15pm that includes 10 DRM free songs,
HD video that can be viewed at 720p on a TV through the home dock, and
HD Radio. Which I just recently experienced with a high end car audio system a friend installed. Very nice!

If the IPod finally allows subscription and streaming from their library (not a pandora app) and improves their sound quality they would probably destroy the little bit of the market the Zune has for now, but unfortunately that would kill what little competition IPod has now and prices would go up. Nothing is better for the consumer to improve quality and lower prices than competition.

@wedsdg. Seek and ye shall find discount coupons at DELL. BTW its $187 not $189 after coupon

Going off topic (sorry) but what is Rockbox? I have a Sansa Rhapsody e200 Series MP3 player which isn;t the fanciest but works great and great sound IMO. I use it with the $15/month rhapody service because I love downloading album after album. What does Rockbox do for the sansa

also, back to the main discussion, I think when it comes time to upgrade, if the iTouch and Zune are still the 2 relevant decisions, I wil have a hard time deciding between the apps for the iTouch and the ZUNE because of the zune pass which is like my rhaposy BUT I also get the free 10 downloads a month. may be based on personal use - I use mine 99% for the music, so I could see me leaning towards zune. may be a few years though so but then who knows what will be out there

@krubby Rockbox is open source firmware for the sansa and others (easy web search). It does not support subscription music and I only went to Rockbox after I ditched Rhapsody (mainly because they did not match the Zune 10 free deal). Why I like it is that it improved the sound quality and battery life and allows for more formats and higher quality bitrates. IIt supports Ogg-Vorbis and many others. Other features includes

-Gapless playback
-crossfades, fade-in\out
-Bookmarking (great for audio books)
-dozens and dozens of themes and skins to customize the player.
-The audio recorder can record MP3 now instead of just WAV (so can the Radio recorder, which is not crippled with quality loss like the sansa software).
-The audio recorder in Rockbox has volume level thresholds to turn recording off and on (great for recording classes etc)
-dozens of games and apps

wow, thanks for the quick and detailed reply. One last question (promise...). Can I use my Sansa on ZunePass? Or does rockbox let me do just that? personally I know subscription music isn't everyon's cup of tea but personally I like the ability to move over so much music, and if for the same price I get 10 downloads/month that would be like gravy for me. But I just don't know that much about it - I have the e200r (the rhapsody) sansa and it just works so seemlessly that is what I have stuck with.

I do like the gapless music and I am starting to download more and more audiobooks from my library to sansa and I hate how it doesn't have bookmarking. something I am surprised to find so few players have

@krubby ZunePass needs Zune. Rockbox does not support Zune or subscription services. Sansa R series (rhapsody flavor) used to be a problem for Rockbox. Check their site, there was an issue with encrypted or locked firmware, it may have been cracked. Rockbox only runs IPod series 1 since apple started encrypting firmware
by krubby September 28, 2009 2:15 PM PDT
thanks for all the help. for now I think I will stick with what is on there since I don't want to lose the rhapsody interface. the bookmarking is the biggest downfall for me. when this workhorse dies then I may have to check into zune (although I do love sansa players for the price - get a lot of bang for the buck)
by Forked_Tongue September 28, 2009 2:23 PM PDT
I bet a lot of developers will port over their Touch software after a few mods to the Zune. What may be more interesting is if MS will pull or ban software similar to what Apple has done?

Where is the 189 dollar Zune HD? Do want.

Rick is right, Jasper. The best innovation Apple ever innovated was getting the heck out of the way and creating a marketplace for the masses to access the ideas of individuals. Individuals create, not corporations.

I wonder what the pricing on refurbished 3rd gens will be and when they will be available.

Not for another month or so, when people start returning their 3rd gen touches for repairs, etc. Even then though, the 3rd gen iPod Touches would still be only $20-$30 less than a new one.

OK deal considering the warranty, definitely worth it if you were going to buy a new one, but I'm happy with my first gen that I just bought for $85 :D

Seems to me that the 16GB for $199 is the best deal here. Same price as the "new" 8 GB touch (with exactly the same hardware, since the 8 GB wasn't given the faster processor) but double the capacity. Plus, the 16 GB no longer exists in the 3rd gen line, which makes it "special" ;). The 32 GB for $249 isn't as enticing since its only $50 bucks less than the new ones with the faster processors.

Hey Rick, when you comment, how come you don't have that red C after your name like the other cNET employees?

Good question! I'll ask, but I think it's because I'm not technically a CNET employee. Some bloggers are, some aren't. I'm in the "aren't" category.

i still don't understand why people would get a wii (worst console in this generation) over a 250.00 xbox 360 elite... but then why would poeple get a 250.00 over a 300 dllr ps3? lol
