Netbooks keep getting bigger and better, but somehow their prices keep getting lower.

It wasn't too long ago that finding a 10-inch Netbook for less than $300 was cause for whoopin' and hollerin'. Now Amazon has the 12-inch (well, 11.6-inch, technically) Acer Aspire One AO751h-1378 for $279.99 shipped.

That's a full $100 less than when CNET reviewed this model just two months ago.

By "12-inch," of course, I'm referring to the size of the screen. As noted, this One actually has an 11.6-inch screen; I rounded up.

What's particularly impressive about this LED-backlit display is its 1,366x768 resolution--way higher than what you find on 10-inch Netbooks, and about on par with 13- and even 15-inch laptops. Translation: you'll have a much easier time working in your Web browser, word processor, etc.

Despite the "big" screen, the Aspire manages to keep to a trim 11.2 inches by 7.8 inches by 1 inches and 2.8 pounds. Dimensions like those are a big part of Netbooks' appeal.

The AO751h should run a bit faster--and longer--than previous models, thanks to its 1.3GHz Intel Atom Z520 processor. Alas, according to CNET, it was a bit on the pokey side, though battery life was indeed excellent.

(Note: CNET tested the six-cell battery; the $279 model highlighted here comes with a three-cell. However, you can get the six-cell Aspire for just $295. That's an extra $16 I guarantee you won't regret spending.)

Everything else is pretty standard: 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a Webcam, three USB ports, and Windows XP. You also get Acer's cool multitouch touchpad.

How big can a Netbook get before it's no longer a Netbook? That's a debate for another day. But there's no debating that this is a stellar deal on a portable PC.

Bonus deals: In case you haven't heard, you can now buy a Nintendo Wii for $199.99 and an Xbox 360 Elite for $249.99 (after rebate). Great time to be a gamer!

The following product mentioned is available.

This is a super deal (even if it doesn't have Win 7 on it--coming in just 4 weeks).

Yeah, I'm almost to the point where I'm going to stop suggesting PCs, netbooks, etc. that don't come with Windows 7 (or at least a free upgrade).
by GeekBoy September 24, 2009 8:08 PM PDT
Is it really? for another $50 you can get a full blown laptop with Celeron 2.2 GHz and 2 Gb of DDR2 RAM, DVD burner, etc., from BB.

That atom just does not have much power, though it may be good for just surfing the net where there are not many places to plug in at.
Maybe it's time to come up wth a dual CPU laptop with the ability switch between Atom and regular CPU. A new type of dual core?

RIck, I thought of a scenario where it might still worth recommending netbooks that don't come with Windows 7 or the free upgrade. Consider whether the price point is good for someone who just wants to put Linux on it. ;) Also, if your netbook deal is so good that even paying for full price for Windows 7 doesn't spoil it... that's a darn good deal!

Keep up the good work.

I have been waiting for a month waiting for Win 7 already. I'm someone who simply pretended, and continues to pretend, that Vista just never happened. I don't even want an upgrade, preferring to keep all new installs simple and as-definitely-required. I wonder if anyone will go for a Vista rollback option for 50 bucks when Win 7 comes out. Maybe 100 bucks for a double rollback to XP.

I have two PCs with Vista Home Prem 64 bit: one is an HP 17: DV-7 with 4 GB ram on a Turion RM70 dual core and the other is my own build using an Athlon 64 x2 3800+ with 3 GB of ram on an ASROck mobo with a Seagate SATA HD and they both work great. Both started with Vista SP2. I got Vista OEM from NewEgg for $80.
What is the complete obsession and fascination with Win7? Is it Vista with SP2 added in and they added a revised set of things and called it Win7?
I think a mass of people should be nicknamed Ba BA for the sheep droning they do.
Vista works for me.

I waited until i couldn't wait any longer to pick up a netbook for my Girlfriend's birthday next week. I finally picked up this EXACT model last night at micro center for $299. A week earlier it was $359..

I guess with the release of windows 7 soon, everybody wants to clear out their inventory?

But great find.

Nevermind. I actually got the 6-cell version (AO751h-1192) for $299. Now i'm even more pleased with my purchase last night.

I checked this out at Costco recently. I really wanted a netbook that I could use to watch my Slingbox on, but the video capabliities of this netbook are anemic at best. I saw some reviews where it struggled to play HD YouTube videos, and you can see (and hear) it stuttering on 720p videos here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBgrgMmUgQg

I guess I'll wait for Windows 7 and Ion netbooks to come out. I really like it otherwise though.

Did anybody notice the screen is 11.6 in. but the laptop demension itself is 11.2, huh?

the screen size is based on diagonal dimentions. measure the diagonal part of a 8 1/2 X 11 piece of paper - it is about 13 inches. same concept

Actually the upgrade to the larger (8-hour) battery is only $11 if you pick a black netbook.

It's perfect for what I need. Typical netbook specs w/ a decent size screen. I will load up my own customized version of XP I have spent years tweaking & trimming and all will be fine. Win 7 is fine for my PC, but why pay an OS premium for a netbook?

Google the issue on this series. They randomly hang!!! The return rate on this is so high, that's probably why the price dropped so much.

I thought I'd share my experience with the netbook. The computer itself is great, but it has a horrible wireless adapter, and can't maintain a connection to a wireless network for any meaningful period of time. This makes it pretty hard to use. Otherwise, it would be a great deal.

So, I know you don't take requests and all but I was just kicking myself for not getting that $290 desktop from a week or two ago. Any chance of another quad core soon?

Oddly enough I was looking for a quad too....found this:

http://www.amazon.com/Gateway-4200-09-DX4200-09-Desktop-PC/dp/B001NVW8F0/

AMD Phenom X4 Quad-Core 9100e 1.8 GHz Processor
4 GB RAM

Not the fastest quad core, but not a bad price either.

for $339.99 - if you want to mess with Bing Cashback you can get it a few bucks lower.

I can't believe they put a price tag on junk. I wouldn't even take it if it was free. You have to pay me at least 300 dollars just to take it to waste space in my backpack and house.

It seems we have a marketplace convergence of laptops and cell phones, very interesting to watch this evolution. The original concept was Alan Kay's Dynabook, circa 1968. see ---http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynabook---

I am perplexed. The review of this laptop has a sentence that reads: "The AO751h should run a bit faster--and longer--than previous models, thanks to its 1.3GHz Intel Atom Z520 processor." A review of the Acer Aspire One 751h-1378 with the same microprocessor reads: "...but the slower-than-usual processor can lead to frustration."

Can someone help me understand if the processor is fast enough?
