Get a Visioneer flatbed scanner for $20

This flatbed scanner can be yours for 20 bucks--if you don't mind a mail-in rebate.

(Credit: Visioneer)

Update: This appears to be sold out already. (Check back later and even tomorrow, as Newegg often gets replenished stock.) My apologies to those of you who get Cheapskate via e-mail, as it's occasionally out of date by the time you receive it. All the more reason to visit the site directly!)

Update #2: As of 1 p.m. ET today (Thursday), the scanner is back in stock! The code still works, and the rebate is still available.

Scanners are insanely handy. They can turn old snapshots into digital photos, archive paper documents electronically, turn any printer into a copier, and so on.

Alas, they're still on the pricey side, which is why I'm excited about this deal: Newegg has the Visioneer OneTouch 7400 flatbed scanner for just $19.99 shipped.

Note: that's after signing up for Newegg's free newsletter, applying coupon code EMCLXNN27 at checkout, and mailing in this $20 rebate form (PDF).

The OneTouch is a USB-powered scanner, meaning it requires no bulky AC adapter--just plug it in to your Windows-based PC (sorry, Mac users) and go.

It's extremely slim, measuring just 1.4 inches tall, and it sports five convenient one-touch buttons for various scan jobs: scan, copy, e-mail, OCR, and custom. The lid is hinged in such a way as to accommodate thicker items like books.

Visioneer bundles photo-editing software and Nuance's classic PaperPort, one of my all-time favorite apps. It provides a virtual filing cabinet for scanned documents, but also lets you drag and drop scans to various applications.

(I'm not sure which version of PaperPort comes with the OneTouch, but it's worth noting that the current version sells for $99.99.)

Although this is a new scanner, not a refurb, Visioneer's standard warranty is just 90 days.

That's kind of annoying. On the other hand, you're getting a full-featured flatbed scanner for the unheard-of price of 20 bucks. That's pretty tough to pass up!

Rick - Can you confirm whether this is compatible with Windows 7? That is the only thing holding me back from making this buy. It isn't listed under the specs.

Sorry, can't confirm that. But chances are good that if it works with Vista, it'll work with Windows 7. If not, it's a pretty safe bet Visioneer will update the drivers soon enough.

Has anyone tried this or any other Visioneer scanner with 7?
by paul skwiot September 22, 2009 10:11 AM PDT
Yes, it's compatible with Windows. I've had the 7300 scanner for 8 years. Still works like a charm, even taking it with me on the road to a client's office when I'm enrolling. If stands up to lots of abuse.

I pulled the trigger anyway - For $20 I can set up a virtual XP if I need to scan in anything and save to a flash drive, it'll be worth it. Thanks for all your hard work, Rick! We really appreciate it!
by iamgoldenstate September 22, 2009 8:10 AM PDT
so this ISN'T compatible with Macs? Booooo!

As they say:
"If it sound too good to be true - its probably NOT".
Since you couldn't get the price right.
Its a $20 rebate, making the price $70
NOT
a scanner for $20 as shown.
Please try to get it right, so we don't waste time looking for non-existent deals...

...or maybe you forgot to apply the coupon code?
by lostinmywoods September 22, 2009 9:54 AM PDT
you need to use the coupon code ... and then it will be $20
by donerightray September 22, 2009 9:54 AM PDT
Right!!! ...just processed the order and the deal is $20 after the rebate is recieved .... article was and is correct.... so who is wasting who's time?
by mister scoop September 22, 2009 9:56 AM PDT
"Please try to get it right"

Like entering the promo code! It's worth $50.

Its about time someone should ban him.

@SEO-Maven

The jerk store called and said they're hiring. Maybe you should go apply...
by kevin78661 September 22, 2009 9:57 AM PDT
Did anybody notice? The price is $69 AFTER a $20 rebate which makes this an awful pricy stand alone scanner. But if over paying is good for you......have at it.

OOPS didn't see the code my wrong BUT rebates still suck chances are you won't get it.
by krubby September 22, 2009 10:57 AM PDT
I disagree on not getting the rebate. I have made many, many purchases that involved rebates and every single time I have gotten the rebate back. A lot of times even if it says 4-6 weeks I get it in 1-3 weeks. Some sites you can now enter information online, even track status of rebate. Even if it is the good old fashion way it takes what, 2 minutes, to fill out paperwork and mail? not a major investment in time.

plus again the main point is I always get my rebates - not an issue for me
by rhynole September 24, 2009 8:42 AM PDT
If you keep copies of everything you submit, there is ZERO reason you will not get your rebate. Every now and then you might have to call the 800 # and letthem know you havwn't gotten it, but as long as you have all your proof, you're good as gold. I love rebate offers and rarely have any problems. And what problems I HAVE had, hav always been resolved pretty easily.

Shoot! You're right. Well, it's worth checking back in a couple hours, or even a couple days, as they sometimes get replenished stock.
by rickbroida September 22, 2009 10:01 AM PDT
Heh, heh, I always get a good chuckle from the folks who can't be bothered to read the very next sentence after the product link. You have to apply the coupon code to get the $19.99 price. (Well, actually, the $39.99 price, but then the rebate drops it further.)

I went to the Newegg site immediately after getting Rick's e-mail. The scanner is sold out. Bummer.

Really doesn't matter now. I just tried to buy one and was informed that because of the offer being limited or the stock being low they were not going to allow me to put in in the shopping cart. Very disappointing for Newegg and not too good for their good-guy reputation.

Out of stock already. Even though I just received your cheapskate newsletter. Newegg won't let me order for later delivery. Disappointed . Can't help but wonder about Newegg's marketing practices.

It's not New Egg's fault. Look to the columnist for offering 'deals' that get exhausted too rapidly as the quantities are too low for the readership.

I have a tremendous respect for New Egg. They are ? in my opinion ? a very trusted, reputable retailer.

I have had two scanners that lasted me the past 10 years. Both Visioneer. The first was $15 after rebate and the second was $20. The first I ditched when Visioneer didn't make XP drivers. The second one I just ditched due to no Windows 7 drivers. As I mostly scan text documents (receipts, newspapers, etc.) both did a good enough job for me. I just wouldn't hold my breath on Win 7 drivers, so you can only hope the Vista drivers will work.

BS. You always suggets crap that is in limited quantities. ALWAYS.

And you have the gall to apologize.."My apologies to those of you who get Cheapskate via e-mail".

Yeah? Well, I'm sorry I get this stupid e-mail, too. What SHOULD I do? Spend every waking minute checking the CNET site waiting for the ?deal??

Your job is to keep ?eyeballs? on the site ? not alienate customers.

I've looked at a few 'deals", and they are consistently SOLD OUT. [CNET editors' note: Personal attack deleted.]

Wise up, ?Cornelius". Investigate your sales base, how many items are available, and if the Vendor will back-order. You know they will sell out of a few hundred items. Tell us in advance the situation.

I don't like you wasting my time, frankly - it doesn't speak well for your employer.

Hey William - All you are doing is posting a troll post to get a response so I'll bite

Rick rocks, so go take a hike.

If you are so sorry you get the email then there is a simple way around that, UNSUBSCRIBE

I have ordered 3-4 different things that Rick has posted. Why does Rick have to do your homework? you seriously are asking Rick to call these various vendors, ask how many items they have in stock, if they will backorder etc? meanwhile in the 10 hours it takes to get the answer the deal isn't published?

@WilliamHarper: Believe me, this is just as frustrating to me as it is to you. I spend a lot of time each day sifting through deals, and still more time writing up the one that looks like a winner. And then for it to sell out an hour or two later? Makes me want to pull my hair out.

Unfortunately, there's very little I can do to prevent it. If this proves too frustrating for you, by all means, please unsubscribe. Last thing I want to do is cause anyone grief.

As for the all the rest, well, sticks and stones... :)
by PeteyBrian September 22, 2009 1:29 PM PDT
Keep up the good work Rick - the deals are so good and you have enough of a following, they sell out fast!!!
by TheMilkybarKid September 22, 2009 2:47 PM PDT
People usually get what they deserve because that's the way the Universe works: what you give out always returns to you in either the best or the worst way for you personally. It's not an accident that "belief" is very similar to "be-life" so what you "believe" you "be-live"

Rick believes he's doing the best for everyone and that's how he be-lives his life: if you believe good happens then that's what happens and if you believe **** happens then that's what happens too!

Obviously I wasn't believing enough to get the deal but I believe that means there's something better on the way for me!

HEY RICK!
Keep up the good work buddy and don't let the "WilliamHarper"s of the world get to you. There are plenty of us out here who know that these cheapskate deals don't last long.

As the old man always said... "You snooze... you lose"!

That's funny this is the only cheapskate I've gotten in the last two weeks. So much for subscription service. I rate this NO stars.

Yeah, yeah, Newegg seems to fizzle on some offered items, like this scanner. Second time we've missed on one of the deals extended by Newegg. Blast it!
But we "CNET" folks SHOULD NOT join the "lack of social graces" and "incivility" going on, lately, in our great land by picking on the staff of CNET! 9/22/09, ca.6p.m.EDT

Hey Rick! Just wanted to thank you for your great work! I'm sure you have lots of followers (and 1 more in TJ, Baja); But obviously every public person has some detractors, like those that complaint for "losing time" by reading your newsletter, but have more than enough of it, to write comment after comment to criticize, yet lack the will to just click "UNSUBSCRIBE". There's some old Spanish saying that could apply here, because seems to me, those critics just mean we are advancing. Long live the cheapskate (blog)!!!

Visioneer has a standard one year warranty. The model 7400 is Vista compatable but is not scheduled to be Windows 7 certified. It probably will work however with Windows 7. Visioneer produces excellent scanners at various price points. They also stock portable scanners for the business traveler.
