Get a Dell pocket printer for $29 shipped

I can't imagine this deal will last long, so I'm going to make it quick: the Dell Wasabi PZ310 pocket printer is on sale for $29 shipped (plus sales tax in most states).

This is a Dell-branded version of one of those zero-ink (aka ZINK) printers that made headlines last year. That means it uses, duh, zero ink; instead heating the crystals embedded in special photo paper.

Consequently, the printer itself is tiny, measuring just 0.9 inch thick by 4.8 inches long by 2.9 inches wide and weighing a mere eight ounces (with its rechargeable battery installed).

So the Wasabi can literally ride around in a pocket and churn out prints on-demand. Prints from where? Any PictBridge-compatible camera or, better yet, most Bluetooth-equipped camera phones. (See Dell's PZ310 product page for information on Bluetooth printing.)

Alas, the iPhone doesn't seem to be supported, at least according to the FAQ page, but I'm hoping there's a workaround. Why? Because I just ordered the PZ310. Had to: it was selling for $149 just a few months ago!

Also, I've seen the Polaroid version of this printer in action, and while the 2x3-inch prints aren't spectacular, it's just crazy-cool.

Again, I have a feeling this deal won't last the morning, so if you want in on the pocket-printing action, act fast! (By the way, the PZ130 is also available in blue and pink.)

Sorry for the cheesy Dell promo video, btw. I just realized how much it comes across as an advertisement, not a product overview.

That is pretty cool - great find Rick! The paper is kinda pricey on Dell's site... found the paper a little cheaper on samsclub.com for $15.86 (including shipping) for a 48-pack, versus $20 on the Dell site. On the Sam's site - search for item # 770559. BTW - the actual printer is $96.47 on the sams site.

Anyway to get that price if you are not a member?
by rickbroida September 8, 2009 7:34 AM PDT
You're right about the paper -- that's definitely the pricey part of the equation. Guess you always end up paying for consumables. In this case it's paper instead of ink!

I can't picture any real practical purpose for this but it is an awesome gadget to carry around in my backpack. Ordering 2, on for me and one for Mrs.CFG

Ah, looks like there's a higher price on the product page (second link in the story), but if you click the top link, you'll go right to the shopping cart and the $29 price.

Thanks for the find Rick. Let us know if you find a work around with the iphone. (I bought it with hopes that you will find one! - otherwise it will be a gift!)

Thanks Rick - Agreed, too cool to pass up. $.50/sheet is super costly for cigarette sized paper, but showing off to a friend could be priceless! I too bought one with the hope that I can use with my iPhone 3g.

Rumor has it the forthcoming OS 3.1 update will offer file sharing via Bluetooth, so hopefully printing will be part and parcel with that.
by PeteyBrian September 9, 2009 12:03 AM PDT
That would be great if 3.1 allows bluetooth file transfers for the iPhone (better late to the party than to not show up!). For jailbroken iPhones users, iBluetooth may be a solution via Cydia. I'll check it out once my Wasabi shows up on my doorstep!!!
by PeteyBrian September 16, 2009 11:37 AM PDT
Rick Strikes Again!!! My Wasabi in!!! Just another reason to Jailbreak your iPhone! I loaded iBluetooth from Cydia app store onto my iPhone 3g. Added the Wasabi battery, hooked up battery charger, added paper (we do get 12 papers to start). Picked out a pic of mine within the iBluetooth program - which recognized the dell printer instantly - and BAM! Out pops a below average but SUPERCOOL photo!!! I'm having family friends over tonight - we're gonna have some fun (11 photos worth anyways! For $31.00 delivered plus tax, PRICELESS! If only Dell could give us a deal on paper!!!

Does it come with ANY photo paper? I can't find anywhere that says.

I'm 98.7% sure it comes with a starter pack of 10 or 20 sheets.

2 x 3 pictures are the size of my business card... not really practical for anything, unless you have kids that want to easily print out their photographs and stick them onto their books and/or binders.

This looks more like a toy than something useful but I got one anyway lol. $29 is too hard to pass up.

are technology gadgets "cool" now in clubs? They used to not be, used to be if you are buff and good looking. Cell phones only do so much too, everyone has an iphone or blackberry nowadays.

Damn it, deal is gone! Now it's up to $49.

Well, it didn't work with my G1, anyway. :/

Thanks for the correction. I'm officially stoked to get this in the mail.

Wow, just stick it in your back pocket, sit down, and ruin your printer! Great idea!

Nah, sports coat pocket works too 8)

If you don't wear a sports coat, then see Steven Cullifer's comment, or put it in your manpurse lol.

Paper supply: the product listing at Dell says it comes with 12 sheets.

At $29, a nice deal for curiosity, but the paper cost kills it beyond that.

For the ungodly cost of these consumables, Dell should give this printer away FOR FREE. Even then I'm not sure it's much of a deal, outside of the "being the kewlest printer geek" factor. The size of the prints does it in for me...not all that useful, and just another piece of tech clutter that a couple of months from now will have me asking "just what the eff was I thinking???"

Yeah they fixed that one! The 29.00 deal was for those buying a computer and this was a add on.It's 49.00 on sale, now but they plugged the hole on the add on link thru. I came home today to check email and saw a dell resolution regarding my credit card being denied,BS.........called and they honored the 29.00 deal with my debit card. I would bet somebody got in trouble.......
Good Score!!
by PeteyBrian September 9, 2009 9:06 PM PDT
Ordered one on my debit card - DELL called me and a machine told me these are on back order - that I'd get it around September 18th and that I could cancel the order if I wanted. I'll be waiting!!!
