This bracelet supports a unique cause: 8GB of wearable storage!

It's rare enough to find an 8GB flash drive for less than $20, but one you can wear? Meritline (yeah, it again) has the 8GB Bracelet Wrist Band USB Drive for $12.35 shipped.

That's after applying coupon code MLC40142835P, which is conveniently listed right on the product page. That code will also work for the blue, yellow, red, and orange versions of the bracelet.

As you'd probably expect, this is a USB 2.0 drive that's compatible with virtually every operating system. (Linux and Mac aren't listed, but I can't see any reason the drive wouldn't work with them.)

So, you tell me: Is a wearable flash drive more or less convenient than a typical thumb drive that rides on your keychain or in your pocket?

If you're the kind of person who uses a flash drive all day, every day, I think this might be seriously handy. Definitely a conversation piece (to say nothing of a geek badge of honor).

In any case, it's hard to argue with the price. The coupon code expires Friday, August 7, and I desperately hope these don't sell out in five minutes like yesterday's Meritline deal. (Again, sorry about that.)

Also, I should note that after yesterday's mention of problems with the vendor, I received several e-mails from readers. Some said, "Meritline, never again!" Others: "Meritline, love 'em!"

Because I haven't had any problems with the company myself, I'll simply pass along what others have told me: Customer service via e-mail is poor, but much better if you pick up the phone.

Same here. I think it means I'm a bigger geek than I think I am.

i got an 8gb microSDHC card from newegg that comes with an SD and USB adapter. so basically i keep it in the USB adapter which goes on my keychain.

basically the same as this without being dorky looking.

Dorky is in the eye of the beholder. (And this beholder agrees. :)

I got one of the Star Trek ones offered by Kellogg as a promotion. It's the 1 gig and I'm not sure who manufactured it, but it looks really good, especially having the Federation logo on it. However, there is a tendency for it to come off. The USB connection is slide into a rubber end piece but there is no way to lock it together. If they have that on this one I would want it for sure. I just lost on that I had attached to my key chain when I pulled it out my pocket and it shot right into a storm drain.

A great deal on flashdrive memory. But the ultimate in geekwear?

Yeah, isn't that funny? I wonder if they're actually smaller bands.

Put my order in. Would be even cooler if it had a digital time display.

A word of warning: the picture used by Rick and the picture on the Meritline site are slightly different. I'm not sure what the situation is, but the Meritline photo seems, for my tastes, to be of a cheaper-looking and less-attractive item.

Good call. The one pictures is entirely different! What gives Rick?
by kingrah1 August 5, 2009 10:20 AM PDT
AKK, the ones on the site are fugly!
by rickbroida August 5, 2009 10:26 AM PDT
You're right! My bad entirely. I was trying to find a shot that didn't have Meritline's ugly logo pasted all over it. I thought the one I chose was the same product, but obviously the coffee hadn't kicked in! I'll update immediately. Thanks for the catch.

Yup, Rick's picture looks a lot better. I wonder if this was a bait and switch. I'm suspicious of Meritline. First, they ship from Hong Kong and it says ETA is two weeks. Second, if you use the coupon code, you are opting-in to their newsletter.

I like the idea of USB drive bracelet and i like the price but i'm not taking this deal.

Out of curiosity, Rick, where is originally-pictured one for sale, and for how much?

We used these at my old company. They're great for event-based stuff where you have to be outdoors.

I wish I could buy from Meritline, but their online site sucks. I ordered from them before, but forgot my password, and tried use the "password reset" feature, but after a week of trying I have yet to receive an email with my temporary password (nothing in my spam and trash folders either). Also tried to email them...nothing.

Oh well. Thanks anyway Rick.

Ordered. By the time I need it I should have it lol. most of my computers are networked, my PS3 is networked, but something like this works great for backing up save files on a PS3, transferring video files, or even as a "New Computer Kit" where you can keep all the data you want to reinstall when ever you buy a new computer, upgrade hard drives, upgrade to a new OS, (like Windows 7)

Hell you can even use this thumb drive to transfer save files to a friends house if you guys want to play games using data that's already progressed.

There are a lot of things you can use something like this for. I was thinking about buying a 14 dollar 4GB flash drive with color but they were cheaply made... In retrospect maybe I should have ordered the blue one from the site but I don't care...

I wonder why some sites (like this one) ask you if the product is good before you receive it? That'd be like asking me how I like the burger that I just ordered at a restaurant is while I'm still eating the free rolls, after my waitress just took my order. Can't they wait to give me the dang thing? lol

Good find! I've been holding out using an old 512 mb drive for documents and my ipod classic as a portable drive for anything bigger than that. I like the idea of storing videos, software, and operating systems on my wrist. And for $12? Thanks.

Did anyone read the related article entitled "USB wristbands scream, 'I'm a nerd!' "? Seems that these aren't so original...but you can't go wrong with 8GB for $12 Shipped...

Rick,
I think the black is VERY macho. I just can't decide which eye shadow to wear with it.

It looks to me like the bracelet closes with just the USB plug and cap. Unless there's some sort of a locking feature you'll be wearing it one day and oops, it just got snagged on the bike handle, boat rope hook, a passer by's pocket, or whatever, and down it goes. About 10 minutes later when you finally realize it's not there it'll be gone forever. Nope, physically not secure for me to trust anything but innocuous files on it, and I don't waste time creating 8 gb of throw away data!!

I really, really, really hate getting these "deals". Why? I went to try and get it and of course after filling in the form I look and lo and behold .... it asks for a zip code. I'm Canadian and I don't have a ^zip code". The least - the very least you could do is say ahead of time that this deal is only for A citizen of the USA and Canadians are left out again. Why do I have to be insulted this way? Just say it at the first. Surely the CNET Staff can figure out how to warn Canadians not to even think about trying to get the deal and post it at the top of the "deal". And this has happened more than once !
