It lists for $500, but the 32-inch Vizio VO320E is on sale from Dell for just $359.

(Credit: Vizio)

Looking for an HDTV for the bedroom, den, game room, or wherever? A 32-incher might be just the right size. Dell has a Vizio VO320E 32-inch LCD HDTV for $359 shipped. It's new--not a refurb.

That's right: new! Take that, all you folks who were griping about refurbs! (Just kidding. I welcome the griping: It lets me know what you like and don't like. Well, mostly what you don't like.)

Anyway, the VO320E is not the typical bottom-end closeout junker you normally find in this price range. Rather, it's a 2009 model that's part of Vizio's new ECO line, which promises to "consume less energy than traditional HDTVs."

Specs include a 15,000:1 contrast ratio, an 8ms response time, two HDMI inputs, and a native resolution of 1,366x768--meaning this is a 720p TV. Don't fret over the lack of 1080p--it's overkill for a set this size (which is why you never see 1080p in 32-inch LCDs).

I haven't found many professional reviews of the VO320E, but the user reviews are stellar across the board: 4.9 stars out of 5 on Dell's product page, 5 stars on Amazon, 4.5 at Walmart, and so on.

The VO320E lists for $499.99, and sells in the $425-450 range at most stores (including the aforementioned). Thus, $359 is an outright steal--and Dell deals tend to sell out pretty quickly, so if you're eyeballing a new HDTV, hop on this one quick.

Update: Let's hear it for reader Jake, who notified me of a 32-inch Toshiba LCD for $291 shipped from Overstock.com. (Use coupon code 142933 to get that price.) It's new, too, not a refurb. Nice!

Wow Rick you got an early start, even on a Monday. This is a great TV, I have been researching a good 32 inch LCD, and every time this one comes up. Now you found a great deal on one, and I just may have to convince the better half to allow me to pull the trigger on this one. keep up the good work.

Not bad. I'd have bitten the bullet if not for my difficult preference. I need to research a Cable Card DVR solution as I can see an actual Cable Card TV isn't going to happen. I just can't bring myself to pay for another box. lol. Hopefully I can find one before this TV sells out. :)

Costco has the exact same TV for $389 this week. Not sure if there's shipping on the Dell offer, but you can pick it up at your local Costco today and not have to wait.

The have the Proscan 32" DVD combo for $359 after $80 instant coupon. Is Proscan their store brand? I saw these at the store and the picture quality looked decent
by dragonsky1 August 3, 2009 8:08 AM PDT
Proscan is a just a discount brand, like Westinghouse, RCA, etc. Best Buy recently had 2 40" 1080P Proscan sets for $500.
by christian-techie August 3, 2009 5:26 PM PDT
The 40" Proscan from Costco/Best Buy isn't too shabby. I'm no expert by any means, but I've had one for the past few weeks and can't complain.

However, now that we're in our new house, it looks a little small since our couch is so far away. Guess I'll have to save my money and keep an eye out for dropping prices on 50"-55" inchers. :-)

Actually, 1080p is becoming pretty common in 32" sets. Sony, Samsung, Sharp, LG and even Insignia offer several sets with 1080p. Though I do agree it's a bit of over kill in this class.

I'm not all that impressed with this TV's specs though. The contrast ratio isn't too bad for this price, but 8ms is extremely slow. Even the store brands carried at Best Buy and Walmart do better than that.

But I could never bring myself to buy a Vizio. While I know their quality has improved, I've still heard way to many horror stories, such as repeated sets DOA, or sets dying less than 2 months after being bought. I have a close friend who is a manager at Walmart, and he says the return rates on Vizio are double the other brands due to defects.

Thanks for the info dragonsky1

Here is the link to the proscan. The response is 5ms, but the contrast is 1200:1 (sounds low). on this 500 cd/m2 sounds very low too. It doesn't look like its a great deal. What is your opinion? I think I'll pass

I have no problem buying Vizio - they put out a good television at a great price. I especially don't have a problem if I buy a Vizio at Costco. If it does not work, I can return it to Costco with no questions asked. The only downside is that living in CA, I have to pay 8.75% tax. So maybe Dell is the way to go.

i bought a 22" vizio from costco and have absolutely loved it. It changes channels quickly (something that a lot of toshibas have problems with) and finds more digital station than most of my friend's tv's. Its quality is stunning for even a small tv. Have had no problems at all.

If you guy buy something from costco by the way, they extend the manufacturer's warranty by a year.

You guys need to profile the Hannspree HT-09. That's an awesome 28-inch HDTV-LCD I got from Microcenter-Fairfax for $399. It's a 1080p set which is great because it natively displays my 1080i Cox cable signal. It also features a fast 3-ms pixel response and lots of ports: 2xHDMI, Component, 2xS-video, and 2xComposite which nicely accommodates my HD-DVR, DVD-RW, Xbox, and handheld arcade player. And though it's got lower contrast ratio and brightness specs I'm really happy with it. It was only $399 afterall. BTW, this is a bridge technology for me before I purchase a 57-inch OLED Wifi HDTV around 2011.

Overstock is sold out of this toshiba.
by pfannkuche August 4, 2009 2:55 PM PDT
update - i purchased two 32' toshiba sets from overstocked - they jsut sent me an email stating the pricing was a mistake and they cancelled the orders. i'm trying to hold them to the sale - any suggestions?
by rickbroida August 5, 2009 10:34 AM PDT
@pfannkuche: Bleh! That's really obnoxious. I would tell them this is just the kind of rotten customer treatment that blogs like Consumerist love to write about -- and maybe they'd be kind enough to honor the advertised price?

Food for thought:

I have been thinking of updating my 27" standard definition (2000 model year) CRT for a while, but after converting the 4:3 aspect ratio into H x W, my 27" is the equivalent of a 33" 16:9 wide-screen:

27" 4:3, L = 21.6, W = 16.2
33" 16:9, L = 28.8, W = 16.2

My Sony Trinitron is almost 10-years old... purchased it at $400 through either BestBuy or Circuit City. Now, 10-years later, I would gain a few inches of real estate for the same money. Not sure if that is real progress, but then again, the picture is all together a lot better on the HDTV's.

this is not the right way to think, though. if all of your programs (movies, tv, etc) are widescreen, then your 4:3 tv has the black bars, and you have wasted space. so for widescreen programming, your 27" 4:3 is actually less than 25" as a 16:9.

21.6 / cos(arctan(9 / 16)) = 24.7827057

of course the opposite is true and if you watch old movies or tv, then a 16:9 tv will have black bars on the sides and this 32" would actually give you a smaller picture han your original 27" :-P personally i think size should always be expressed in square inches instead of diagonal measurements since it is not a linear relationship.

If you have American Express reward points, you can use the points towards a Dell gift certificate. Normally 40,000 points nets you around $200 worth of merchandise at American Express but the $200 Dell gift certificate can be had for 20,000 points. If you use this gift certificate, you will also pay less tax ($11 instead of $25), making the deal a little bit sweeter.

Rick,

Maybe its because you save me lots of money on name-brand electronics but I'm starting to find myself more and more attracted to you. I want you to father my children.

Actually, I'm a dude and I don't have children but we can still work out something. Maybe i can buy you a beer sometime.
