Cut the cord! The Brother HL-2170W is a compact Wi-Fi laser printer.

Remember the other day when I said some deals require you to jump through a few hoops? Here's one that's definitely worth it: Staples has the refurbished Brother HL-2170W Wi-Fi laser printer for $49.99.

Now, before you post a comment telling me the product page says $69.99, let's address the hoops.

First, that $69.99 price is after a $30 mail-in rebate, which comes in the form of a $30 prepaid Visa debit card. It's more or less the same as cash, but it's still a rebate. (At least with Staples it's a pretty safe bet you'll get your money.)

Second, and here's where it gets a tad tricky, you have to add something else to your order so you can apply one of these $20-off coupon codes (provided courtesy of DealNews).

I recommend this box of 100 paper clips for 79 cents. (If you find a cheaper "filler" item, name it in the comments.)

So, to recap: You add the printer to your cart, then add a dirt-cheap item to bump your total over $100. Then you apply one of the aforementioned coupon codes, which subtracts $20 from the order. Finally, you get the $30 Visa card in 4-6 weeks.

What's that? The printer? Oh, right. I've written about the HL-2170W before, back when it was a deal at $70. So hit that link if you want the full details.

Short version: I own this printer, love this printer, and will never buy another non-Wi-Fi printer. How about you?

I've got the wired version of this printer, and it's great. Best printer I've ever owned, and will convince you never to go back to inkjet for anything but pictures. If I could have gotten WiFi for $50, I'd've been even happier. Heck of a deal.

I bought a new one at bbuy, for $99 two weeks ago, it's back up to it's regular list price of 149, but I am sure they will put it on sale again.

Excellent printer - we use it wirelessly in our home office. We also have the color version, the 4170cdw (wireless as well).

Thanks Rick - I pulled the trigger. Printer and paperclips will be here tomorrow. Keep up the good work (and if you need any paperclips, just ask).

Can't beat the price. My only concern/question is that the specs says this printer is a wireless b/g.

I have a wireless N network at home. If I attach this printer to my network, will it slow everything down to g? I remember reading one of Rick's previous postings, saying something like the "slowest speed denominator" factor.

Appreciate if anyone is willing to share his/her knowledge on this matter.

No, your router should be able to run b/g/N and maybe a as well, simultaneously.
by Raabscuttle July 23, 2009 11:16 AM PDT
I have heard that is slows down to g if you run a g on an n network as well (never checked it out to be sure). You can always cascade a G wifi router off one of the N wired ports and then have a G oney and an N only network...
by ajkidle July 23, 2009 11:55 AM PDT
No, you'll be fine. Running a B device would slow things down. G and N play together fine.

And free shipping to boot! awesome!

I bought this printer when Rick first posted this deal at $70. The printer works great and I'm happy with it. Setting it up, however, was not easy. I followed the directions in the manual, but the printer kept getting disconnected after the initial setup and was unresponsive. I had to call Brother and have them walk me through it. But once I got it working, I've been enjoying printing from any of the computer in the house.

Wifi printing would be nice, and so would a laser, but I just got an epson inkjet printer, scanner, fax from tigerdirect for $39,99 a week ago. I always have to wonder though how easy it is to set up wifi for a printer, because wifi isn't always the easiest thing to deal with.

I too am very happy with this printer. I got the same deal months ago as a refurb and can't be happier. Only black and white but I am not going to print pictures. Good article and I recommend this printer, very good wifi printer, dependable and reliable.

Any thoughts on the toner cartridge life - is it a full cartridge or a starter cartridge? In other words am I going to get a even a month's worth of printing out of it before I have to spend more than the cost of the printer on replacement cartridge?

Long time reader of this great blog, 1st time I pulled the trigger on something though and based on the comments above I think I will be glad I did. I almost bought this same printer 6 months ago for about $130.00

Following the steps above looks like it worked out perfectly. I jumped on this early this morning and ordered when it said estimated delivery would be 1 day. As i watched it throughout the day it turned to 2, then 3 and now as mentioned above looks like it may be sold out. But who knows, maybe they will get more in and have the same price next week.

As of now my order status has an estimated delivery of 7/24 (Friday). I'll be surprised if I really get it Friday, I am guessing early next week but maybe I will.

$55.00 printer (wth tax) and next day free shipping - wow.

Newegg has this printer for the same list price plus the $30 discount. Standard shipping is $6.99. So not as great a bargain, but still a good deal?

Hey, Staples is out of stock. Link me Plz?
by krubby July 25, 2009 11:40 AM PDT
Here is the link to the Newegg site. Is $69.99 there which is $20.00 more since you don't have that 2nd $20.00 coupon for over $100.00 orders, but even at that price still seems like a good price

Since the info is available, I would sure like to start seeing consumable cost on these printers. This model is shipped with a starter cartridge that will get you 1000 pages (according to ISO 19752) before you need to buy more toner. Then, you pay ~$50 for your first toner cartridge for a standard capacity cartridge that gets 1500 pages (3.3 cents per page) or ~$70 for a high capacity cartridge that yields 2600 pages (2.7 cents per page). Still not a bad deal, but consumers should know they will be forking out as much as the printer costs in a few weeks to keep printing...

djollota,
you bring up a great point, but I have seen the toner for this for much less. Example Amazon.com sells the TN360 higher yield toner for just $46.89/Free Shipping (about 1.8 cents/page). Plus I bought this to REPLACE my HP InkJet. Replacement ink for that thing was ~$22.00 and I got about 200 pages or .11cents/page. If you think about the ~ 1,000 the starter cartridge alone will give me this will pay for itself vs my inkjet even if I bought a new one at $99.00 every time ran out of ink (which I obviously am not doing - ha ha).

you said I would be forking out as much in a few weeks - I don't print nearly 1,000 or even 2,600 pages in a few weeks, more like 1/2 year or more. If this was for a medium size business going through 2,5000+ pages every few weeks not sure this is the printer for you anyway.

Anyway, I DID jump on this deal as I mentioned above. I know it is now sold out but others may awant to by the same printer somewhere else, like on the newegg link above. so Here is an update. Ordered Thursday morning, arrived Friday (wow - one day free shipping). Came out of the box, looked brand spanking new. Included brand new toner (obviously).

Anyway, set up was a breeze. I saw some comments on amazon about how comlicated getting the wireless set up was. Not sure what they were doing, if you follow the instructions it was easy - I had it plugged in and hooked up for wireless in under 10 minutes. I did have to know my network settings and security password but that I think would be a given for anyone running a system with encryption. Also I did take a network cable and plug it in for setup (setup only, then you can disconnect it)

Printer itself so far looks like it works great. takes maybe 10 seconds (at most) to 'warm up' and then the pages fly out of it. maybe I am just used to my inkjet.

Can you add a duplexor to one of these? Two sided printing is critical. If they support that, I would replace my aging HP Laaserjet 4MP
