Get a free DRM-removal utility (today only)

Drm-Removal strips that eee-vil copy protection from most kinds of video and audio files.

My good buddy (and self-described Cheapskate fan) James is looking over my shoulder today, so I need an outta-the-park deal. And here it is: a Tiffen 52mm UV Protection Glass Filter for $4.99 shipped!

No, no, I'm kidding. Today's deal is literally a today-only deal: Freebie-software site Giveaway of the Day is offering Drm-Removal, which promises to strip the DRM from audio and video files alike.

Specifically, the utility claims to remove all copy protection from AAC, WMA, WMV, iTunes AVI, and other commonly DRM-infested files. And based on some quick tests I ran, it works.

Of course, now that DRM is largely a thing of the past, at least for music, this may not be something you need. On the other hand, if you have some old, protected content cluttering up your hard drive, here's the perfect chance to liberate it.

Similarly, if you've purchased videos from, say, Amazon or iTunes and want to watch them on the device of your choice, Drm-Removal will convert them to an unprotected format.

That being said, I don't condone the use of this or any other utility for piracy. I do, however, believe that if I purchase a song, movie, or whatever, I should be allowed to watch it where and how I please. This program makes that possible.

As with all Giveaway of the Day deals, this one must be downloaded and installed before midnight tonight (July 22). Make sure to follow the registration/activation instructions in the readme file, which are simple and straightforward.

One final note: This is one seriously ugly-looking app, and it will automatically start converting any selected media unless you first venture into the settings and disable "Start conversion automatically." But it does seem to work, and you can't beat the price.

I'm confused. Is this a transcoder or a program to strip the DRM from the original file?

From what I read about it, it re-records the original file sans DRM.
by SleepyInKC July 22, 2009 9:52 AM PDT
I downloaded it and am trying it now. It does seem to be a transcoder, so the name "DRM-Removal" is a little bit of a misnomer. For example, it converts m4p files to mp3 files.
by half_n_half17 July 24, 2009 11:02 AM PDT
Yummy! Nothing sounds better than a 192k mp3 transcoded to another lossy format.

Hmmmmm. I guess DRM removal for free isn't too bad. I was really hoping for a deal on a i7 based desktop with nVidia graphics. Maybe tomorrow?

Yeah, definitely, check back tomorrow. If you don't see it, check back the day after that. ;)

Seems like using this would be a DMCA violation, not that I'd really care.

People who have DRM files couldn't be further away from pirates. As far as I am concerned this software is doing all of these people who paid their hard earned money a service. The last thing they are going to do is share it for all the world to use.

Oh, and you've got your nerve suggesting people plunk down hard-earned cheese for refurbed xBox 360s! Dude, are you with us or agin us?

At least have the courtesy to rant in the right post! :)

LOL. I'm trying to figure out if this is a joke or a mispost under the wrong blog entry. Rick, they've been giving hard time lately... just keep going. If at first you fail post post again. Even Bonnie Cha came back after writing about a "new technology" called "alfa (sic) blending" on a gps. I still chuckle about that one

No worries...it's just my aforementioned buddy James trying to be funny. As usual, not very successful.

There's a great bookmarklet called toread (toread.cc) that's perfect for situations like this.

I didn't know Cheapskates could afford to time travel to get the deal on July 12 as posted :)

Alas, traveling into the past does me no good. I need to see what deals are coming up! Anyway, thanks for the heads up...fixing now.

It doesn't work for 64-bit, as someone posted in the comments on GOTD's site. :(

Works fine on Vista 64. I am using it now.
by rickbroida July 22, 2009 1:17 PM PDT
Ditto that. Works on my 64-bit Vista box.

This program is amazing! I am currently doing for free what iTunes wanted me to pay the $83.00 to do for my library. Thank you so much for this find!

Cool...kinda slow on my old XP Pro box, but beats paying a net total of 1.29 for non-DRMed copies of songs already bought...and that late arrivers only paid .99 after the iTMS policy switch.

This is stupid. It won't active as it says it already was activated. Please only put things on here that are real and work.

Thanks,

Tried using it to unDRM some iTunes TV episodes my sisters bought (I've just gotten in the habit of buying DVDs to rip to ISO and play with VLC, but my sisters fall for the convenience factor of iTunes like many others out there). It didn't work. It would begin playing the file in QT, but then DRM-removal said it was hanging on the licensing for the video (yes, it normally plays fine, and yes, it was legitimately purchased). Oh well, I'm sure my sisters wouldn't even notice. giveawayoftheday does DRM removers a lot, so maybe there will be another video one that isn't so... meh.

Activation didn't work for me, either, saying it had already been activated on another machine. Also, tried to click the link to activate online using info in activation screen, but got an error. Oh well.

Yeah, I get the same error message saying this has already been installed on another machine.

What a waste of time. Please only put valid offers up.

Thanks

You should probably go get your money back.

Giveawayof the day does a good job overall. Every now and then something doesn't work right. Most times it does. Today wan't your day. Tomorrow might be. The site is well worth a bookmark or better still an RSS feed.

Also their forum may (or may not) have a fix for you. It's too late now no doubt as normally you have to isntall that day but next time maybe you will get the help you need in their forums.

Same problem with activation. Also, doesn't seem to work (in the unactivated trail version at least) with WMA music files from the Zune marketplace. :(

Says already activated
by mlipshaw July 22, 2009 11:02 PM PDT
same activation problem. has happened more than once with Giveaway of the Day offers. while I love this column and frequently buy products you recommend, you really should reconsider this particular source - if you read the feedback from many of the offers from this site, it is a frequent disappointer for your readers!

FWIW, I installed it on my machine and everything went just fine. Are you positive you followed the instructions in the readme file? If so, my apologies.... I wouldn't post something like this without testing it first.
by Renegade Knight July 23, 2009 7:47 AM PDT
See my post above.

Let me ad. The world of free has some risk. So does the world of paid, but with paid at least you can expect some service at some level. Free, you are on your own.
by jca671 July 23, 2009 7:46 PM PDT
I had the same problem with activation- and yeah, followed the README to a T. Eh, cest la vie- youtubedownloader gets me most of I want these days anyway DRM free. :)
