Get a 10-inch HP Netbook for $279.99

10-inch Netbooks tend to be pricey, but the refurbished HP Mini 1033CL is just $279.99 shipped.

I learned something during my recent trip to San Francisco: Netbooks rock. Sure, they're a bit cramped, but for the kind of work I need to do while traveling (writing blog posts, checking e-mail, etc.), they're absolutely fine.

I also learned that it's worth spending a little extra on a model with a 10-inch screen and decent-size keyboard. For example, Buy.com has the HP Mini 1033CL for $279.99 shipped.

The Mini features the ubiquitous 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, a 60GB hard drive, and a 10.2-inch screen. Webcam, too.

It runs Windows XP Home (though I'd almost certainly move to Windows 7) and weighs 2.4 pounds.

Because it's a refurb, it has only a 90-day warranty. My bigger problem is with the three-cell battery; I'm spoiled by the nine-cell in my MSI Wind Netbook, which can literally run all day without recharging.

Even so, if you're in the market for a Netbook, this is a solid, if unspectacular, deal. One thing is for sure: I'm done lugging 7-pound boat anchors. I'm officially a Netbook convert.

I could have sworn that you didn't understand or like netbooks at first? Now you love them?

Yep, because the early models I tried had small screens and keyboards and terrible battery life -- and were selling for closer to $400. I think a 10-inch screen offers the right blend of usability and portability. Hey, can't a guy change his mind?

If they fix the keyboard to usefulness for us typers, then they serve a purpose.

lolz Rick you finally see the light and to think you used to write "what's the big deal about netbooks " on some of the netbook specials you posted. I'm in love with my Acer aspire one with the 6cell battery, its made up for the money I paid for it in 3 days saving my butt on work and stuff. I'm working on getting a mount for it in my car =3. Welcome to the fold brother

I missed the Windows 7 buy-in (my own fault). But maybe I can live with XP on this or just move to Ubuntu. :)

wait, so there's no upgrade to windows 7 on this? so itd be 150 bucks to upgrade?
by Nychocolips July 17, 2009 8:15 AM PDT
I've searched the site and see no reference to a Windows 7 upgrade included or even discount. If anyone sees otherwise, please let me know.

Thanks

Hey, Squaretrade is offering a 1 year Warranty for $50 dollars for that laptop on the the purchase website. I don't know if that is a good enough deal for Cheapskates or just people who have Refurbaphobia.

I'm trying some battery websites to see if there is good deal for upgrade cells. :)

Cheers

You'll have to check out www.hackint0sh.org or www.insanelymac.com. A quick scan of the forums did not look too promising...

Seems like a good deal, because HP currently sells the not-as-nice Mini 110 version, with Linux instead of XP, for about the same $279 or $289.

Personally, I'd wait at this point until netbooks start coming out with Windows 7 (or make sure that I have a great price and a low-cost, pre-ordered copy of Windows 7 around, to update the OS).

I bought a 900a in january from bestbuy for around 200$ and I have to say I really do like it. I've used this HP model it is a lot nicer then my 900a, the keyboard is awesome and the general feel is really good. The only downside is the small trackpad, but I would rather take a small working trackpad compared to the downright awful trackpad on my 900a

Does it have regular VGA out, use with any monitor?

I don't really like the buttons on the side of the trackpad, I prefer classic below the trackpad. This has got on the side right? How does it feel.

you could always have a small wireless mouse with it.

I called Meg at Sales at Buy.com. There is no upgrade licenses to Windows 7. Not that I or most of you would be shocked by that. She was great about answering my question and other stuff though. If you call to put your order consider asking for her.

Cheers

This one looks like a better deal, right? At least you can hook this one up to a regular monitor.
