Get an Asus Eee PC Netbook for $129.95

by Rick Broida

You read right: This refurbished Eee PC Netbook is just $129.95 plus shipping.

(Credit: Asus)

Holy dirt-cheap Netbooks, Batman! Geeks.com has a refurbished Asus Eee PC 900 for $129.95. (Make sure to apply coupon code 900M at checkout to get that price.) Shipping will run you about $10.

As you might expect, this is not exactly a powerhouse PC. The 900 comes with a 900MHz Celeron processor, 512MB of RAM, and a 4GB solid-state drive (SSD).

Translation: forget Windows. This baby runs Linux, which is absolutely fine for stuff like e-mail, Web, and other basics--but no doubt a deal breaker for some users.

The limited storage poses some problems as well, though you can always expand it by popping in an inexpensive SD card or USB drive. This is a machine best suited to those who work primarily on the Web.

And for that it's aces. I assumed that such a heavily discounted system would have a supertiny screen, but the 900 actually has an 8.9-inch LCD. And Asus Netbooks typically have comfy keyboards, so you should have no trouble getting some work done.

Because it's a refurb, the warranty expires after 90 days. I have no problem with that; the thing barely has any moving parts anyway.

So, if you're looking for a cloud-friendly Netbook at an impulse-buy price, this is the best deal I've seen. I'd say the sellout risk is high, so grab one while you can.

Wow Rick, I can't believe this low price. Had to snatch one up! It will be a good fit for part time business use.

Great find, Rick. Though, the absence of Windows does keep me from pulling the trigger.

Yeah, I've got a Windows-based netbook with me while I'm in SF, and I'm trying to decide if I could just as easily be using Linux. Mostly I'm working in a browser or OpenOffice, but I do have occasional need for iTunes. That's the ONE stumbling block!

Hi Rick,

Here is a list of 10 Alternatives (most LINUX) to iTunes. Rhythmbox was recommended by someone in one of your previous posts.

As I recall, these are a modders paradise. Need XP? You can load it onto a flash drive and mount it internally. But it is a hill of trouble.

I think the 901 was modders paradise
I could be wrong though

It is relatively simple to install XP on an eee PC.
There are many guides available on-line.

The cheapest netbook I have found with XP Home is this one I just bought last week at mwave.com, it's an Refurbed Asus EEE PC 900 Intel Celeron 900MHz 16GB SSD 8.9" display for 189.99 with free shipping, but if you keep refreshing the page and wait for the banner above to say "Click here to activate $10 off coupon if bought within the next 60 minutes", then obviously you will get it for $179.99 shipped instead like I did. I received it yesterday, looks brand new, works great so far. http://www.mwave.com/mwave/SkuSearch_v3.asp?SCriteria=3005317

Actually, the lack of XP and presence of Linux makes me want it more, not less. I use both XP and Linux, and prefer Linux. I find it easier to deal with, and quicker on the same hardware.

Did you mean an IN-expensive SD card? :-)

Great find, the keyboard is just too tiny for me, and I don't even have big hands.

Yay! Great price --just bought one. I've been thinking about buying a netbook for a while, just to tinker around with. A this price, it can't be beat. This will be my first time using Linux -- if it doesn't go well I'll just use TinyXP. I'm a little worried about the tiny keyboard -- I've tested them before and know that my hands are simply too big -- but it should be good enough for quick messages and tweets. Let's face it, I'm not writing novels over here.

I ordered the dell inspiron 15n that was featured in this blog a couple weeks ago. It came loaded with the linux ubuntu OS and I love it. This was my first introduction to the linux as well. After ordering, I upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04. Very intuitive and easy to use. I mainly use it for web based activities. Makes me wonder if I'll ever pay for windows again...

Thanks Rick. i couldn't be happier with my new laptop.

Can't tell for sure, but this version seems to lack a webcam. Can anyone confirm? I have the 7" version - it's great - but I can repurpose that one and get this one to take advantage of the bigger screen and bigger touchpad. But I need a webcam!

I just ordered a Refurb Dell Inspiron Mini 10V for 255 with a coupon for 15% off. It has a 10" screen, XP home and a 6 cell battery. The Dell Outlet also has free shipping so all I had to do was pay the tax. This is probably a better deal for most folks then the Asus since new these things are well over 300 and probably closer to 400.

I bit. Cnet directed me to a refurb deal years ago on a toshiba pda and the thing was(and continues to be) stellar! So glad I popped in and saw this before they were sold out. Thank you so much for letting us know about this great deal, Rick!

If you're in California, expect to pay an additional $20 on top of the product and shipping ($8 e-waste fee + ~10% sales tax).

I've been looking for a cheap netbook to play my online game Evony (flash based free RPG game). Does anyone know if this will work? I have no clue what kind of resources Evony requires.

Great, then get an iphone. Nobody is stopping you.

However, this EEE PC won't cost you anything in monthly service fees. Plus the screen is several times larger and has a real physical keyboard. And 3 USB ports. And...
by pithenumber July 12, 2009 6:41 AM PDT
the iPhone has a monthly fee, the EEEPC doesn't
so the iPhone is a few grand more expensive than the netbook

Obviously an education in basic writing and grammar skills was a waste of your time too. As others have pointed out, your math skills need work too.

@windooor7 "I would rather have you..." Other people's choices and opinions are not for you to decide. Go troll somewhere else.
