Get a free domain name and hosting from Microsoft
A free Web site and hosting from Microsoft? It's true.
(Credit: Microsoft)The words "free" and "Microsoft" don't often appear in the same sentence, so imagine my surprise at discovering this deal: a free custom domain name, free Web hosting, free e-mail accounts, and more.
As you might expect from the name, Microsoft Office Live Small Business has a decidedly business focus--but that doesn't mean you can't use it for a personal site.
The freebie account includes not only the domain (any available .com, .net, .org, or .info address), but also site-building tools, reporting tools, project and document managers, 100 e-mail addresses, and collaboration-minded online workspaces. You get 500MB of storage, too.
So what's the catch? There really isn't one, though the free domain hosting expires after one year. After that, it'll run you a very reasonable $14.95 annually.
Needless to say, this is a pretty nice offer for anyone looking to start a small business or just carve out a private corner of the Web.
Side deal: Amazon MP3 has Brit-pop star Lily Allen's second album, It's Not Me, It's You, on sale for just $3.99. iTunes price: $9.99.

@redwall_hp This has been around for a while, its not new. "Domainers will be over this in no time", well maybe not you are limited to 1 free domain only, after that you have to pay something like $15

Hence the reason it's free.
Are you serious ? We get lots of free stuff from M$: new versions of IE, OS patches, lots of Live web services - heck, Live Search will even PAY You - Live Search tools on WinMob cell phones, etc. You must've confused them with Apple which simply MUST overcharge its customer-base at every turn so the Apple Board can buy their tenth home, tenth boat, and a small man-made island off the coast of Dubai.
I tried uploading sites build with other tools (dreamweaver, publisher, iWeb), and none of them were 'compatible' (Microsoft support's term not mine) with the windows servers that they were hosting the sites on.
BUT, in a very limited scope, this is not a bad deal at all. I built a website for a school project for instance.
Got the album already and love it, too bad I missed on this deal.
Any db layer also ?
One way to look at this is a way to make money selling custom modules for other webpages.
However, will admit that the $14.95 annually is a fantastic catch for a person starting out on the web.
I am a bit "scared" to jump for such an offer. When Yahoo! came with their low priced domains, I picked up a few. However, renewals are scarily higher than normal domain rates offered by others
As of January 2008 (a year ago), this "amazing deal" did NOT allow you to use your web building tools to upload onto the site. You had to use theirs. To me ... this made the whole concept totally worthless. Their templates leave a lot to be desired, so does their web building "software."
You can also use paypal buttons in order to work around there module fees. You can check out my website if you want an idea of how these things look. It's for a soccer team.
