Find your way with Sony wide-screen GPS, $99.99

by Rick Broida

Sony's wide-screen GPS normally sells for $299.99.

A GPS for less than $100? Pretty common these days. A wide-screen GPS for under $100? Still pretty rare. A Sony wide-screen GPS for under $100? Almost unheard of--but that's exactly the deal you'll find at the SonyStyle outlet store.

Specifically, Sony is offering the NV-U73T GPS navigation system for $99.99. It's a refurbished model, but it features a 4.3-inch wide screen, text-to-speech, optional traffic updates, and some nifty extras.

For example, it has a Dual-View-3D Junction Guide, which promises to help you navigate complicated highway interchanges. And you can execute common commands (like "take me home") just by tracing your finger on the screen. No wading into complex menus.

CNET hasn't reviewed this model, so I urge you to check the user reviews on Amazon. The consensus is mostly positive, and it appears the complaints have all been addressed by some recent firmware updates.

I'll let you know when mine arrives. Yep, I actually ordered one myself. I probably should have dropped an extra $10.99 on Sony's two-year replacement plan, seeing as refurbs have only a 90-day warranty. Well, at least shipping was only six bucks.

Update: Back in stock as of Jan. 22!

Oh, hey, forgot to mention: It apparently comes with a three-month traffic subscription. Not sure what it costs after that, but $60/year seems to be the going rate.

Our Samsclub has this model reduced to about $100, but may be worth looking at if having it your hand, having a new one, and pretty good return rules matter. Looks like they overstocked for the holidays and now have clear out the pallets. They must of had 50 of these last week.

Rick, you might be able to try a square trade warranty. But I confess, I don't know much about them. The few things I looked up seem positive. But I am cautious when I don't see them reviewed from a site I trust like CNET.COM.

I called the sony outlet in Weymouth, MA at the Premium Outlets and was able to get this same unit for $79.00 + tax! Can't beat that! Thanks for the tip!

Nice! Still a refurb, I assume?

Wow, I can't find the "Buy" button. Are they all gone? Crazy.

Whoops! Yep, looks like they're gone...the site no longer says "in stock." Check back periodically...maybe they'll get more!

My brother wants to borrow my Garmin for a week. This is unacceptable! I'm ordering a Sony for him. LOL.

Check out the BRAND NEW models before you buy. they are listed at 1/2 off. I picked up a new 4.8 screen top of the line for $200 at the sony site. That one has all the bells and whistles.

Well, my unit just arrived. Initial impression: very nice! Lovely screen, zippy interface -- now just have to give it a road test.

Not loving the car mount! I think it's stuck to my dashboard permanently, which is kind of a bummer if I want to use it in another vehicle.

Some very funky routing as it tried to navigate me home, but luckily I already knew how to find my house. And it did an excellent job getting me in and out of downtown Detroit. Particularly cool, the traffic thingie just kicked in automatically. Didn't even need the external antenna.

I am disappointed in this unit. I just missed a refurb of the Garmin Nuvi 350 for $122. I wish I got that instead. I am not crazy about its addressing or routing. I put in my home address and it tried to send me somewhere else. I also found out you can't put in custom POIs like red light cameras. Don't get me wrong, it is still amazing to get a GPS with Text to Speech for $99. And maybe part of my issues come from being used to Garmin GPSs. I'll use it aggressively for a week.

My GPS unit has hung in there. Bought it about a year ago for over $200.00. Wow, how the prices have fallen.
