Score an 8GB Sansa View for $49.99 shipped

by Rick Broida

Originally $150, the refurbished Sansa View is down to $50.

(Credit: Buy.com)

I don't like math (English was always my subject), but here are some numbers I can admire: Buy.com has the 8GB SanDisk Sansa View media player (refurbished) for $49.99 shipped. That's 10 bucks less than the older Sansa e280 I spotlighted in July and 50 bucks less than the equivalent refurb iPod.

Speaking of iPods, SanDisk's players tend to blow them out of the water in the feature department (the exception being the iPod touch). The Sansa View sports a 2.4-inch screen, a microSD slot for bumping up the memory (here's an 8GB card for just $19.99), an FM tuner, and a voice recorder.

Shortcomings? CNET dinged the View for being a bit large and having an unspectacular interface. Also, because this is a refurb, it has only a 90-day warranty, which is provided by Buy.com, not SanDisk. That's not a deal-breaker in my book, but it's something to think about. Still, 50 bucks for an expandable 8GB music/video/radio player is pretty tough to beat.

These Sansa refurbs are all over the place. Woot recently had a 2GB Sansa c250 (refurb) for 14.99 + 5 shipping = $19.99, call it $20. Then a store on amazon.com had 8GB mini SD cards on sale for not quite $16, shipping bumped it up to $22.50. So, for $42.50 (shipped), I will have a 10GB player. The only question is whether or not the c250 reads the exact mini-sd card I bought. I have not yet received the card, so that remains to be seen.

By the way, I'm still on the lookout for that 1TB external drive under $100 you foretold. Of course, I'm hoping it will be a Seagate (for the 5 year warranty). So, I may have to go over the $100 threshold.

horsenbuggy -- go to www.microcenter.com - they have the Seagate 1TB external for $149. Not quite $100, but still pretty darn cheap.

I've been holding out for a long time on getting an mp3 player primarily for the gym. This just might be the ticket...................8Gbs of flash memory (expandable), loaded with features, compact (ish) and all for $50?! SOLD. This beats the pants off my old 6Gb iPod mini for gym use I think.

If the interface is an issue, you might hope for a Rockbox port (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/SansaView) for the unit. My girlfriend put Rockbox on her e260, and she LOVES it. It's faster, customizable, and comes with a handful of applications that the Sansa software does not provide.

I just signed up for buy.com credit card (woo credit crisis) and bought my Sansa View for only $22.50 with tax and free shipping. Not bad for mp3 player that runs for $100. The last mp3 player that I spent less than $30 bucks on was my Sansa Express 1GB- which is great for taking to the gym, but with an old ipod that only works in my car (when charging) I needed something that could fit a good bit of music, with an 8gb microSD, 16gb fits almost half my music collection. BOOYAH. And to think I could have spent that much at the bar tonight :)

After 5 years, Firefox faces new challenges

Mozilla helped reshape the Web since releasing Firefox 1.0 five years ago. Now it's got a reawakened Microsoft and Google Chrome to reckon with.

There's a map for that: GPS or smartphone?

Almost every handset comes with mapping software these days, but standalone GPS devices are becoming more affordable than ever.
