iPoll: How many iPods have you owned?

by Steve Guttenberg

Since Macworld 2008 didn't announce any new iPods, I thought this would be a good time to survey iPod owners.

Are you on your first, second, third, or fourth iPod? Apple has sold more than 100 million of the little buggers, so I'm a little curious about how many of you bought more than one over the years. How much money have you invested in iPods? Have you bought them as gifts, or received one as a gift? Are you still on your first iPod? I still have the one I bought in 2003, and I intend to use it till it breaks.

My first and only iPod, long may it run.

(Credit: Steve Guttenberg)

Did you buy a new one because the old one crapped out, or did you lose it? Did you buy a new iPod because the new one did stuff the old one didn't? Or maybe the new one was smaller or better looking?

Do you regularly watch movies or TV shows on your iPod? Where do you listen to music--at home, car, plane, gym, or work?

How much money have you invested in accessories--docks, speakers, cables, and chargers?

And do you also have any other brands of music players? Do you ever rip CDs or LPs? Do you stick exclusively with iTunes? Or never buy iTunes? Hey, I'm just curious, please let me know.

i have two iPods - 20gb and 1st gen shuffle. received both as gifts from clients. for listening to music my preference is the smaller and simpler shuffle but the 20gb i can install an OS and use as a boot disk or mount it for back ups and doesn't matter if you use any flavors of Linux, Unix, OS X, or windows... looking to purchase a new one for my wife so i can take the 20gb from her, firewire rocks!

Sorry bloggers....I have given many as gifts, but I am a MediaPlayer and Zune user...However I have purchased (as gifts) a couple of shuffles and a nano here and there. For me personally, I subscribe to all the music I have...

I have one old style IPod Shuffle and I can't make it work anymore. Maybe the irreplaceable battery is dead.

IPod does not use the MP3 format.

I love MP3 and I hate Ipod. I hate the software and I hate using ITunes.

I have a variety of MP3 players. I prefer the kind that uses AAA batteries and an SD card. Then I can download my MP3 files without a hitch. I have a drive that reads and writes to SD cards directly. All I have to do is use the "copy" command and I am in business.

This is SO much better than anything IPod has to offer. I will never deal with IPod again.

I have a lovely MP3 player with a card and a battery for $ 10.00 at Meijers. It takes a 2GB card. I have another one that I paid $ 30.00 for. The IPdod cases cost more than that.

I cannot understand why anyone is interested in using IPod. It is an inferior and overpriced product.

iPod Nano about this time last year was my first purchase (mostly to use with Nike+). Up until then, I was still using a portable CD player for tunes on the go. Picked up an iPhone (if that counts) about 4 months ago. I generally avoid purchasing on iTunes and instead buy CDs from Amazon, but occassionally buy songs using the iPhone's interface.

I bought a 60 gig one about two years ago now, and it's still going strong and holding a charge for a while. No sad disc faces or anything at this point. I'm pretty gentle with it though, and I think it's been dropped twice at the most.

I then bought a refurbished-through-Apple shuffle for $60 for use at the gym or skiing/motorcycling. Basically, a second iPod for use when I feel like I don't want the weight, or to risk my more valuable HD-based iPod.

Aaaaand I missed almost everything else in your post:

1) I don't watch movies or TV shows on it, mostly because I don't have a long commute, and I drive. If I rode mass transit, I would though. I listen to music in the car, work, gym, home, and any traveling. It basically goes where I go.

2) I have one set of speakers, a Klipsch iGroove I bought for $140. I have one cable for connecting to my home theatre ($6) and one headphone-type cord for use in the auxiliary in in my car.

3) No other mp3 players. I do rip cds using 192kb/sec based variable bit-rate compression. It's not lossless, but it's good enough I can tell the difference, and I find it to be a good compromise between space and quality. I only download from iTunes what I absolutely can't find online in CD format.

That's better.

On my third iPod.
I got my 1st-gen (10GB) as a gift, and it lasted a year and a half before the battery died. Eventually bought a 4th-gen (20GB, not photo) as a replacement, and two years later the battery and hard drive died simultaneously. Replaced the battery in the 1st-gen and it works just fine. I bought a blue second-gen Nano on a whim, and it's my main iPod. 4GB is way too small, so I plan on going back to my 1st-gen until it dies.

I have no interest in watching videos on an iPod; the screen is way too small to look at for more than a few seconds (even on the Touch)! Music is good enough for me. My iPods got me through my senior year of high school (when nobody even knew what they were) and all through college. I listened to mine all over campus, in the car, on planes/trains, and walking around the city.

I've spent easily over $200 on accessories, including cases, a speaker dock, and cables to play the iPod in the car.

The iPod is the only music player I've owned, and I have no intention of switching to another brand. However, I'm iffy about buying another one unless my Nano and my 1st-gen become completely inoperable. Most of my music is ripped off of CDs or purchased on iTunes; some is sent to me by friends.

I've never owned an iPod... didn't like the way iTunes worked, so I stayed away from them...

I ended up buying a 1st generation Zune when they came out. The software was buggy and it didn't have a lot of features, but the new firmware runs much better and the wireless syncing is great.

Amazing. The question is how many iPods have you owned.
The answer, in your case, is NONE.
We dont wish to know about your zune problems.
"didnt like itunes" Sorry, I just dont believe you - another microsoft astroturfer - pathetic.

I don't know when you last looked at iTunes but it has just about everything in it and is way easier to use than the several alternatives I have looked at. Built in free podcasts, a first for any major media player. It has built in Internet Radio. Audiobooks, Games, Ring tones, TV Shows, Movies and of course your music.

Not sure what your desires are but with the wireless syncing of the iPod Touch and iPhone I don't think you could find a better seamless and easy to use interface then iTunes and an iPod.

Take another look I would suggest. I know that those of us that do love Apples products tend to make others that have Microsoft products feel like we are in some crazy fanatics club. Most of us actually used Windows before we tried Apples OS and just found that it worked better. Apple has also done a better job at pulling all of the pieces together in an easy to use, just works kind of way.

Point out some other way to do all of the things I mentioned above with 1 click and I will jump on it in a heartbeat. Apple is after all just a Corporation trying to make money but they do put out some of the best products I have seen. You find me something better and I am all over it.

You don't like how iTunes works, operative word is "works".
But the Zune copy of iTunes which is buggy is ok???
by mborgens January 23, 2008 5:50 PM PST
Great! I'm the guy who bought the only other Zune sold in the US. Maybe if other see each other we could swap songs like they did in that cool commercial.
by xarophti January 23, 2008 6:41 PM PST
gee, elgruga, aren't you the sour apple...oops, should I say "grape"? I do believe the question in the article also asked "And do you also have any other brands of music players?" and "Do you stick exclusively with iTunes? Or never buy iTunes?" so there is nothing wrong with ihulvey07's response that s/he has NEVER owned an iPod and didn't like iTunes. Read the whole article before you start criticizing others' input. I don't like iPods or iTunes either. I don't trust small hard drives and dislike proprietary formats. So there...
by theanimaster January 24, 2008 5:11 AM PST
Yep. Buggy software and dodgy hardware is definitely better than iTunes and the iPod.

But just incase you're unaware... did you happen to know that you can rip music off CDs using iTunes? You don't need to buy from the iTunes Store if you don't want to!
by dnbplus2 January 16, 2008 7:54 AM PST
My husband is on his 2nd iPod Video 30GB (5th Gen) - the Apple Store exchanged his after 2 yrs because of problems at NO CHARGE!! For Christmas he bought me my first iPod Nano 8GB, he's actually jealous because of the cool things it does and I LOVE IT!! Now our 9 yr old son wants one, we'll see....

I only have ONE ipod: a 4 gig nano I bought before the switch this summer. I'm not one for investing tons of money into stuff I don't use often, so I only have one pretty cheap speaker for it (Christmas gift), and a running armband (also a gift). Other than that, the accessories I have are ones I got with it for free.

I do actually have a very primative version of a Creative mp3 player I got years ago while in college. It only holds 128mb, so doesn't really have enough space for what I use my nano for, but I still use it now and then to make voice recordings of elderly family members, and at the gym (need to tune to radio to hear televisions).

Most of the music I play on it is ripped from my CD collection; I have used iTunes for maybe 20 songs over the years, but typically just if I know I only want a single track from an album.

one an IPod shuffle and it has500+ songs for two days of music and it still has 2G to go!
by lyrik_heaven_dk January 24, 2008 1:21 AM PST
If it was only music it was a no go. First recently I have giving in to the concept and that is becourse the iPod Touch is a lot more than a mp3 music player. It is a wifi-e-mail-calender-video-game-program-thing.
Actually it is a PDA though no-one have called it that. But I think that this PDA is the best on the market. Only the iPhone is better becourse of the phone.
It has to be jailbreaked though to get it all. It all being a "thousand" programs at Your fingertips.

I've gotten 3 iPods (myself) over the years.

1 iPod Photo (4th gen; 30GB)
1 iPod Mini (2nd gen(I think); 4GB)
1 iPod Nano (2nd gen; 4GB)

I won the iPod Mini and got the other two as presents. As of now though I've switched to Zune due to crappy battery life in ALL THREE of my iPods. A shame =\

I have never bought one new but I did get an HP model 40 G refurb for the wife for Christmas one year and I just received a new 8G nano video as a gift.
Here is the list:
40 G 4th gen, 10 G 3rd gen, 20 G 3rd gen, 20 G 4th gen, 2 G 1st gen nano, 4 G 1st gen mini, 8 G nano video.
The most I've had to do is replace batteries and I trashed the mini ribbon cable at one point, otherwise they all still work. I gave the 3rd gen to my brother for his wife and child and I still have all the rest. The 2 G nano is the only one that died inexplicably. It is still dead sitting on my desk waiting for ebay to have one cheap with a broken screen or something.

I bought an old Rio500 (64Meg onboard!!!!!). Many years later I finally bought an iPod Nano (1st gen - 4G) and my husband an iPod shuffle (1st gen - 512M). Then I lost my Nano and bought a iPod Video (5th Gen - 30G), found my Nano and won a iPod shuffle (2nd gen - 1G) at the same time. *sigh* So, total of 4 iPods in our house of 2 adults and 2 kids (who are too young to get earphones, so they don't use 'em yet).

I've got 2 iPods - 4G which I bought new direct from Apple website, and a 30 gb 5G w/video I also bought new from Circuit City. I have only ever owned iPods, and have no interest in trying any other manufacturers' offerings.

The 4G still works, but is in my dresser drawer. When the 5G w/video came out, I was jonesin' for it big time. I liked the addition of the ability to see the album art as a song played, and that I could watch videos. Don't watch them that much - use it strictly for listening to music in my truck while on the road. That to me is the best part - the portability of my music.

I've probably spent less than $150 for accessories for both. Bought a corded iPod remote, Sony earbuds, iPod dock, and a Monster iCar Play for the 4G, and no new accessories for my 5G as all these fit it still.

Don't quite have half the memory capacity filled on my 5G - about 2000 songs and a couple videos - no movies. All my music - except for maybe 100 songs off iTunes exclusively - are taken from my existing cd collection.

I'm considering the iPhone, but only because I don't like having to carry my iPod and smartphone too. For the level of web surfing, e-mail, music, etc. I need, the 8 gb of the current iPhone would work, and I'd be down to one single device........still can't justify the money, and my 5G iPod is only about 18 months old..........

The first iPod I bought was for my little sister - 1st gen 2gb nano, then I got a 5th gen 30gb for myself and last year i got a 2nd gen 1gb shuffle for my mum. I'm not getting another one until mine dies...I couldn't face copying all those CDs again as I've upgraded my computer since then and lost loads of files.

I mostly rip CD's but I do get the occasional guilty please from iTunes, stuff I can't justify buying an album for - like captain and teniles love will keep us together or tony orlando's tie a yellow ribbon! Embaressing but true!

Between my wife and I.....4 iPods. 1st was a mini that my wife gave away when she got the 30Gig video a while back. I had a 2G shuffle, but recently bought a 16Gig Touch. I use my Touch daily for email, web, music, calendar. My shuffle is mainly used when working out.
