Steve Jobs, Fortune's CEO of the decade
Last month Apple CEO Steve Jobs made his first public appearance since coming back from medical leave after receiving a liver transplant earlier this year.
(Credit: Stephen Shankland/CNET)Love him or hate him, you have to admit that Apple CEO Steve Jobs has had a helluva decade.
Consider that, under his helm, Apple defined the portable music player market with the iPod, has shaken up the mobile industry with the iPhone, rocked the retail music business with iTunes, and re-invented the computing business with OS X in a way that the PC business--with less than 10 percent of market share--is no longer the bread-and-butter of the company.
Add to that the brilliant marketing behind Apple and the loyal, almost cult-like following of Apple's fans, and it's no wonder that Fortune Magazine today named him the CEO of the decade. The opening lines of a story written by Fortune editor-at-large Adam Lashinsky (which also includes a nice video segment) explain it nicely:
How's this for a gripping corporate story line: Youthful founder gets booted from his company in the 1980s, returns in the 1990s, and in the following decade survives two brushes with death, one securities-law scandal, an also-ran product lineup, and his own often unpleasant demeanor to become the dominant personality in four distinct industries, a billionaire many times over, and CEO of the most valuable company in Silicon Valley. Sound too far-fetched to be true? Perhaps. Yet it happens to be the real-life story of Steve Jobs and his outsize impact on everything he touches.

why is cnet so late to the party. this was announced a long time ago.
Dunno why anyone would worship the guy, though.
No one is calling him Jesus Christ. There is no need to Bible thump/hump/whatever...
We are just celebrating a man's achievements. "Worship" has nothing to do with it.
Enjoy heaven... i did not know that arrogance was accepted there???
"We have a crazy thing we do called 'thinking'"
Oh, you leave yourself SO open with that one. It's just toooooo easy.
@Random_Walk:
Apple's done more than their share to 'screw over customers'. Any look into their forums will give you plenty of evidence to that to dispel any notion that Apple does all of this out sheer goodwill. But they aren't any *worse* than the other OEM's, so.... meh.
Bitter people aren't killed by others; they kill themselves. What they do is swallow poison, and then hope that someone else dies.
Good luck with that.
Your comments are indicative of one who is an atheist, not Christian.
There is no way that you have any Christian values, nor will you ever be in that "heaven" of yours.
Keep on believing your narrow minded belief that YOU know it all when it comes to any religion or politics for that matter.
go apply for IT job with your Apple certificate (Apple knowledge only, no MS is invloved) and see what going to happen. :P They'll roll on the floor and laugh to death.
what has that got to do with anything
troll talkin about random stuff.
Dude, I've been fixing my own Mac stuff for years.
Your "laziness/lack of knowledge" has me RONFALTD.
He is one of many, but by no means the only one. Putting him up on a pedestal is akin to worship and sheep-like thinking.
Without him, Pixar would've been just another Disney's animation branch.
I am the head engineer of IT for Shell Canada's Oil Sands JackPine & SUEX1 Project
My certifications were presented when I was hired for OS X Server deployment for all mission critical control systems & up-grader processes.
You should not shoot your mouth off before understanding while Apple might not be a big player, they are however still a player in many places.
I'd rather worship, not that that is what this article is doing, Steve Jobs than your worship of all things Microsoft and Google. Watch where that gets you in 10-years.
BALLMER FTW!!!!!!1111
true
Why is this not obvious to you?
You must have lost the memo that stated that Apple investors received at least a 500% investment on their return in the past 5 - 10 years, while Microsoft investors lost money on such superlative products as the Zune and Vista.
Steve Jobs should also receive "the most dictator of the year" and "Ripoffs" awards. why?
1. for locking down the devices and services. Allow Apple products communicate with other rivals, but don't allow rivals connect Apple stuffs.... hm.... what I should call ........ oh! One way ticket.
2. Copy others designs.

As it is written in Ecclesiastes 1:9:
That which has been is that which will be,
And that which has been done is that which will be done.
So there is nothing new under the sun.
I?m glad they found Dieter Rams and used him and his work as the jumping off place for the most elegant, stylish and sophisticated creations yet in the computer age.
That's what you all sound like - children who desperately want to be liked.
That's what you all sound like - Those bullies at school who knock other children down for having something that they don't.
Buy what you want or can afford and just shut up about it.
Computers are just tools... Don't personify them or proselytize the CEOs of their respective companies.
I never hear Ferrari or Lexus or BMW owners comparing their cars to other models -- they just get in their car, buckle their seatbelts (hopefully), start the car, and drive down the road with a smile on their face...
Congratulations Steve!

Obviously, you never met a Ferrari, Lexus, or BMW owner. They always compare!
An award like this is based on actual acchievement - Steve Jobs career from the first Apple in 1976-1977 to date has been continuously at the leading edge of that part of the computer revolution where he found himself working. The only other equally long tenure of continuous innovation is probably held by Seymour Cray. Gene Amdahl too had a long innings.
Who else has innovated so successfully and for so long?
Good on you Mr. Jobs - it is a pleasure to see you get the recognition you have earned by bringing so much pleasure and delight to millions :))
This coming from the name "DragonWizard" just makes me crack up!
"Mac or PC Who cares?"
Many people care, much more than the ones who will give a sh*t about your post.
Those who don't care should use their IQ to "grow up or get off this site"
Even better, was when Bill Gates stated that the Internet was trivial and was not the future of computing.
Too lazy to Google it, so look it up for yourself.
No wonder they're straining to catch up with Google and Yahoo!
Ford, like Jobs, was not the creator of his products, but like Jobs had that rare ability to discover, nurture and drive those creative geniuses (like Wozniac) to transform their sometimes unrealistic ideas into the perfect blend of capability and consumer appeal. After all, it was Wozniac who had the idea that a computer would be best with a keyboard and hooked up to a TV which everyone already had but he lacked the vision and the ability to sell the concept or present the product to the people in a way that would change the way they perceived computers should be. Jobs not only did that with computers but did it with the movie animation industry, the music industry, and now the phone industry. There have been times when he bet on the wrong roll of the dice, but his successes far outweigh his failures.
Industrialists of the significance of Ford are rare, but for one to be so significant in several industries like Jobs is is very rare indeed.
Microsoft = Democracy
they both suck, but Apple is worst. I prefer to live in Democracy with all political clouds rather than living in 4 tall walls with a beautiful sky. At least, I would have freedom.
Google = the path to Communism
Google controls our privacy, our email, our Internet, our computers, --- soon they will control our government, health care, and personal finances.
Apple and Microsoft have nothing to do with it!
I had to re-read that a couple of times to understand it. Just for clarification, it means that making computers is no longer Apple's main revenue stream. Ipods bring in a whopping 30% of their revenue, not sure about the Iphone but i'm sure its a large chunk as well.
I'm guessing this kind of behavior doesn't limit itself to your online flame sessions - I'll bet this is how you interact with most of the rest of the world. Pity.
