Apple OKs first porn star apps for the iPhone

Apple has approved the first two iPhone apps dedicated to the careers of popular (or, ahem, so we're told) porn stars.

Developed by GrindHouse Mobile and the stars, the two apps mark the first time that Apple has allowed the porn industry into the store in such an obvious way.

While these apps may be more in-your-face than some of the apps showing bikini-clad women that are already on the App Store, the content of these apps is relatively tame. They appear to show no more than suggestive photos--the same as the apps that preceded them.

In other words, there is no nudity.

The apps, which feature adult actress Sunny Leone and Penthouse Pet Aria Giovanni, seem to be more of a way for fans to keep up with the latest from their favorite starlets. Leone's app features a blog, various sets of photos, and personal videos, along with a Premium section through which updates are pushed to your phone. Giovanni's app doesn't appear to be much different.

While the apps are probably tamer than what some may have expected, GrindHouse did admit that in the first round they were "a little too 'hot' for Apple's compliance department." GrindHouse went back to the drawing board to redo the apps so they would be accepted on the App Store.

"We worked closely with Apple to meet all of their guidelines while developing an offering that is compelling and user friendly," GrindHouse said in a statement. There was no word from Apple directly on its assessment.

Apple has run into some controversy with its App Store approval process, pretty much since it began accepting submissions from third-party developers. For instance, e-book reader Eucalyptus was rejected because it could allow access to the Kama Sutra, an ancient text known for its description of sexual encounters. And an app from the band Nine Inch Nails was rejected because of sexually "objectionable content" in a song.

For the time being, at least, you can get Sunny Leone's free app and Aria Giovanni's 99 cent app from the App Store.

At least it's user's choice to buy the app, whereas a certain search engine gives it to you unsolicited, in your face. Have they fixed that yet?

Well if that is a concern for parents with younger iPhone users there are password protected settings within the iPhone and Google that can greatly reduce younger eyes exposure to those sites.

How about you don't give a child an iPhone? There's a wild concept. If you don't want your child to view this kind of stuff without your supervision, then why give them a tool that allows it to happen?

It's kind of like handing them a gun and saying, "now don't do anything stupid". It's only a matter of time. And you do you really think a kid (especially if it's a boy) isn't going to look-up dirty pics on an iPhone when mom and dad aren't around?

Try being a decent parent first, then gripe.

If this is for you, personally, create a Google account. You can adjust search settings within your Google account. When I have safe search enabled (which is 99% of the time), I never see a single mature search result returned.

I wasn't referring to the iPhone, just the "new" search engine that shows porn videos in the initial lineup... have they fixed that yet?
by Perry_Clease September 23, 2009 1:59 PM PDT
Bingo!

Well i just checked and no it isn't "fixed" yet. However, I will go check it a few more times just to be sure. :)

No nudity? One could create an app showing the porn stars wearing business suits and it would still be a "porn star app".

Excellent troll posting, ShyCelticWitch. You're in top form today.

PSSST: Did you know there's porn on the internet? No, really, it's true! And if you Google for anything, it will be there in the search results.

true. Rule 34. sad but true...

Trolls are those who bash specific products by name. And they are paid to do so. That makes a big difference between what they do and what I do. My comments are just simple observation of facts that anyone else can see if they open their eyes instead of relying on tunnel vision.
by shycelticwitch September 24, 2009 8:39 AM PDT
OK Dan, I Googled "anything". Not one porn site in the first 10 pages, got tired of looking. Any other brilliant revelations I need to check out?
by Kiljoy616 September 25, 2009 4:20 PM PDT
That is easy to fix, so those who want it can get all the porn they want and those who are afraid of the human body don't have to and can go back to reading what ever fantasy novel from 1000 of years ago they believe in.
by Seaspray0 September 26, 2009 8:07 AM PDT
@shycelticwitch. The only thing you've ever done is insult something else trying to make what you like look better. Politicians call that mudslinging. Around here, they call that trolling.

Yes we would not want our teens to know what positions to use when they are fornicating, hahahaha.

I for one as a teen liked to fornicate a lot as well as found the whole porn issue mute.

I don't have safe surfing turned on and I rarely get porn in my search results.
My guess is you age surfing porn so when you do a search it is keeping your search habits so it can tailor it's results to you. Stop surfing porn or switch to Bing or some other inferior search engine.

To me, this is like what they did to all the old cartoons... taking the violence out of them. We didn't grow up violent because the coyote got smashed by falling boulders. We knew what was reality and what wasn't. Kids are smarter than you think. They can handle the porn better than you think, too.

Besides, no nudity is rather lame and porn can easily be found on the internet.
