Apple planning September event?

It's happened every September for the past few years, and it appears it's on track again: Apple is planning a keynote event rumored to take place the second week of September, according to AllThingsD's Peter Kafka.

Almost time for a tuneup for the iPod Touch?

(Credit: CNET)

He says he has heard from "multiple music industry sources" that there will be an Apple event held sometime during the week of September 7. Now, this isn't a huge surprise since Apple has held an event announcing the latest upgrade to the iPod and iTunes around this same time every year. But this year there are some interesting variables in play.

It's essentially guaranteed that Apple will announce upgrades across the iPod line, including the iPod Touch and Nano, and perhaps even kill off some older models. The iPod Touch is rumored to be getting a camera, digital compass, and microphone. Other clues have pointed to the Nano also getting equipped with a camera.

Of more interest perhaps is whether Apple will use this event to debut the oft-discussed and long-rumored Apple tablet. Different sources have pointed to a 10-inch touch-screen device that's essentially a giant iPod Touch being available either this fall or in early 2010. It's rumored to have a music element to it, through a new album format supposedly called "Cocktail," making its introduction at a music-focused event seem plausible. The timing would also make sense if Apple wanted to establish some solid pre-holiday buzz before the annual winter shopping season.

And finally, many are wondering if Apple CEO Steve Jobs will use the September event--if it happens--to make his first public appearance since returning from medical leave earlier this year. Apple executive Phil Schiller has filled in for Jobs at these keynote-style events since January, but since Jobs has been officially back at the company's helm since the end of June, the September event would be the first opportunity for him to return to the spotlight.

Not sure Zune was ever 'born'--more like an aborted fetus that they tried to keep alive in an incubator.
by Super2online August 13, 2009 11:26 AM PDT
Uh oh, start shaking in your boots iPod.

Hallelujah
by Renegade Knight August 13, 2009 11:42 AM PDT
I'm hoping they announce a 128gb touch. More likely 64 though.
by toosday August 13, 2009 2:43 PM PDT
Long ago, someone said in in an interview something along the lines of:
"We have to let go of the idea that in order for Apple to succeed, Microsoft must fail"

Who was that? Oh it was Steve Jobs!

I think you all need to apply that thinking to the iPod, Zune, Sansa, etc. Just a thought :)
by Kip720 August 14, 2009 10:24 AM PDT
actually zune isn't going to die, and since it'll be integrating more with the 360 (which is pretty popular but I'm sure your too far up Steve Job's *** to know about this) it'll be getting more support.
by macewan_ August 16, 2009 6:24 AM PDT
@Kip720, Kune doesn't hit that emotional button. That 'oh man I gotta get one of those' button. Besides, the Zune is as attractive and hip as a band-aide with Ninja Turtles.

"It's essentially guaranteed that Apple will announce upgrades across the iPod line (and perhaps even kill off some older models), including the iPod Touch and Nano"

Don't you mean "including the iPod CLASSIC and Nano" as opposed to saying they might be killing off the iPod Touch?

Sorry if my phrasing was confusing. I've changed it to be more clear. Thanks!
by T_Tran August 13, 2009 11:40 AM PDT
You are reading the sentence wrong.

It's essentially guaranteed that Apple will announce upgrades across the iPod line (personal comment) including the iPod Touch and Nano.

Now get rid of the "personal comment" and you will see that the sentence is completely correct.

It's essentially guaranteed that Apple will announce upgrades across the iPod line, including the iPod Touch and Nano.

The keyword used is "upgrades," referring to the Touch and Nano.

They won't kill the classic that would be a bad move for them because alot of their customers would have no problem just moving over to the Zune 120's
by Maclover1 August 13, 2009 6:11 PM PDT
@munkyfun14, I seriously doubt anyone would move to the Zune 120 if Apple killed off the iPod classic. First off they probably own a classic now. If this was to happen, Apple would announce it and kill it off in 3-6 months, giving classic people time to get one.

Lastly a 64gig iTouch would be close and probably good enough for most. If you grab a classic now and wait another year or two max I am sure you will see 128 and 256gig iTouches. So hold on to your classic for another year.

Even more important is the software, is having iTunes and a huge library of music, play lists etc is the hard part about switching to a Zune.
by Kip720 August 14, 2009 10:27 AM PDT
but because of itunes plus the music doesn't have drm anymore so switching over to zune wouldn't be that hard.
Also Microsoft is considering in releasing a 64g zune hd later this year.
by natedogg0511 August 16, 2009 8:02 PM PDT
I have the zune software on my computer and I can play all of my iTunes music on that. Will it not work on the zune HD if i get that?
by vmlenigma August 13, 2009 11:27 AM PDT
Too bad they don't change the date to the 15th to rain on the zune HD release .l

It's weird how everyone already knows and has seen the upcoming Zune HD, but there is no clue about an event Apple is hosting in less than a month. How can they keep their products so secret?! By killing the people who make them...?
by BogusBasin August 13, 2009 12:17 PM PDT
By releasing them into the wild to become employees of Palm
by monkeyfun14 August 13, 2009 12:59 PM PDT
@ivassillis

Because Microsoft leaks info on upcoming products on purpose while not denying or confirming. Its good marketing gets people excited.

" Its good marketing gets people excited."

Ho ho, good one 'monkey'! Oh wait, you were serious?
by EvanSei August 13, 2009 11:41 AM PDT
well if the ipod touch gets a camera I will have to upgrade my touch... again, I feel like such a tool.

You would upgrade your Touch just because a crappy built in camera? Save your money and hold out for another year.
by SactoGuy018 August 13, 2009 11:54 AM PDT
It will be VERY interesting to see if Apple finally phases out the iPod classic. I think we'll see one last generation of the iPod classic, now with a single-platter 160 GB hard drive and an improved menu system that will look like the iPod nano menu system but be fully compatible with the new "Cocktail" album note format.

I wouldn't knock the Zune HD. The device has some things I would like to see in the IPOD Touch. OLED screen and HD playback would be awesome. Also a better wireless syncing would be welcomed. I think Apple's implementation of wireless syncing is half assed. I am sorry but a built in camera doesn't really do it for me. I will stick with my first gen Touch.

I wouldn't be so quick to write off the built in camera crappy as it is. It completes the jigsaw that makes the iPhone an excellent platform for augmented reality applications. I too would like to see an OLED screen but most non techies really don't care which acronym is used to describe the technology behind their screen. I mean as long as it's not CRT ;)
by kelmon August 13, 2009 12:45 PM PDT
Wireless syncing really won't come into its own until you don't have to plug in a cable to charge the device. Until then you might as well sync at the same time as you are charging your device. I can't say that HD playback on a PMP is that attractive either since I'd never use it - there are better and cheaper ways of bringing HD content onto your television.

A nicer screen, however, is always welcome.
by BruceLawrence August 13, 2009 12:09 PM PDT
Wow talk about a money maker. All these folks going out to buy another iPod Touch simply because it might have a camera? Its basically the same thing they already bought, I'm sure, relatively recently.

I knew people who went out and bought a new iPod just because it was pink !

I'd be shocked to see a tablet succeed in the market. Then again, the marketing genius that is Apple will find a way to make it succeed regardless of how useles it is.

Not all of Apple's products have succeeded. The cube for one. But I agree. If anyone can take the tablet market by storm, it's Apple

Amen
by kelmon August 13, 2009 12:43 PM PDT
The tablet succeeds in the market if Apple can demonstrate how it allows you to do something that you want to do that you can't do (or do well) with something else. I am very dubious of the concept but I am also fascinated to see whether it a) really exists and b) how they pitch it.

With respect to the iPod Touch, you assume that it is existing users buying the new version, which I highly doubt. My bet is that it will be people upgrading from Classics and Nanos who don't want to buy a full iPhone.
by natedogg0511 August 16, 2009 8:17 PM PDT
I currently own a older gen nano and I am waiting for announcement of the new iPod lineup before buying anything. I will be buying an iPod Touch though, i just dont know which gen yet.
by scraig248 August 13, 2009 12:45 PM PDT
I'm hoping they come out with a Rugged iPod Touch. Something you can drop in 3 feet of water, drop on a concrete floor from 16 feet or so above it, scratch resistant, and also has the ability to push out loud volume through a headset -- includes a regular stereo earpiece, but you can optionally buy a padded headphone also known for ruggedness that you feel comfortable wearing while mowing the lawn or working at a construction site.

In other words, kid safe !

Nothing with a touchscreen is going to be rugged.
by SlimGem August 13, 2009 8:06 PM PDT
And nothing is "kid safe". The nasty little buggers.
by sburchill August 15, 2009 9:15 PM PDT
Apple will never do this. They rely on third party businesses to provide stuff like this. Get an OtterBox, it'll keep your iPod Touch safe.

Have I been living under a rock and not heard about where the Iphone will land at the end of the year? Could that be announced here or is there no indications that they will be announcing that soon?

This was also be the perfect time to announce a deal to release the BEATLES on iTunes. The remastered CDs and the Rock Band video games are coming on Sept. 9. Let's hope for some unreleased materials as an iTunes bonus. Maybe even a Beatles branded iPod.

Exactly, not to mention, with all the hype about this new player having a camera and whatnot... if Apple didn't deliver, they'd have a lot of disappointed fans. There's no way that they would make a fault like that.
by sythara August 14, 2009 1:02 AM PDT
Seriously? people really pay attention to what apple has to say? Whoohoo, they release more of same crap but its more shiny.

How about the ability to replace a battery on my ipod? What about the ability to expand memory on it? How about iPhone for Verizon? Those would be the killers, but it will never happen.

I'm happy with apple stuff I have. iPod touch and nano I own are amazing, so I'm not apple hater. But seriously.. They do all these huge shows for everyone, just to show how much of your money they are wasting away on what could simply be an announcement on a website.

But I forgot, apple is all about looks and hype.

I'm getting a Zune HD because the features that I would actually use look better on it.
Sorry, I have a real camera. And my car tells me which direction I'm going pretty well. And my phone has a microphone that I will actually use. Sorry.

I think people comments should be about what Apple would or should release and how that could o could not affect the market and the competition; not what about what they got or could get so, if do you got all that, good for you, but personally i don?t think anybody really care. Please people... Focus, seriously.
by threpac August 14, 2009 5:32 PM PDT
OK, then.

Apple should make their phone's web browser not crash on so many websites. It's hard to reply on these comments if my phone's keyboard locks up on the browser crashes.
by Kip720 August 14, 2009 10:21 AM PDT
So let me get this straight, you apple fanboys want to get a new itouch just because it'll have a crappy 3mp camera in it?
And as for price cuts if they add a camera and microphone then the price will most likely stay the same.

I think you all need to look at other MP3 players, there are plenty of other companies that make better and cheaper ones, stop buying something just because it's shinny and start buying something because it actually is quality.
