Analyst expects 500,000 iPhones sold this weekend

Piper Jaffray's senior analyst Gene Munster thinks it's going to be a good weekend for Apple and AT&T as the companies begin the rollout of the iPhone 3G S on Friday.

Munster expects Apple will sell 500,000 iPhones this weekend, according to a research note sent to clients, reports Fortune. That's half as many phones as Apple sold when it launched the iPhone 3G, but Apple sold that phone in 21 countries on the first day. In comparison, the iPhone 3G S will be sold in only eight countries on its first day.

Still, 500,000 phones sold in three days is a lofty number. Consider that the iPhone 3G was a fairly big upgrade over its predecessor when it was released, and most notably added the much faster 3G data speeds to the device.

While the iPhone 3G S may be perceived as a lesser upgrade, it does have some nice features, not the least of which is a speed boost--it's up to twice as fast as the 3G, according to Apple. The 3G S also comes with a 3-megapixel camera and can record video.

Of course, the iPhone 3G S will also come with iPhone OS 3.0, released Wednesday to all iPhone customers and available for download through iTunes.

Palm only sold 150,000 thousand launch weekend, and it was not a complete sell out, and yet still it is considered an overwhelming success that has put Palm not only on the road to recovery but complete and total domination over Apple and the iPhone.

150,000 versus 500,000 (and that is for a third generation product not out to kill anything) oh yea Apple is really doomed.

even palm never expected to outsell Apple or directly compete with them for that matter
there weren't even that many manufactured I guess
the pre was a way to get the company back on track
and I'm sure it's done a fine job
either way Apple Palm RIM etc have nothing to worry about
there's more than enough space to accommodate all of them
as long as they have good products !

Plus Palm only launched in North America. The iPhone 3GS is launching in Europe as well.

@ibeetle

What are you talking about? Success? This was Palm competition to iPhone 3G & 3G S. In reality the launch was a failure. In reality the sales are from current Palm users. 100K is paltry, to downright pathetic for a device that was touted as "THE" iPhone Killer.

"Sprint, Palm Fall as Pres Go to Current Customers"

@slapppy

Palm never "touted" the Pre as the "iphone killer." Secondly, for a new product which has a never before used OS, Pre had no TV AD's running prior to launch, Palm did great. Last I checked the original iphone barely sold 140,000 units opening weekend, and that was with national TV AD's. IN REALITY, it does not matter if current Palm users bought the Pre, 35% of the Pre purchases were to new customers.

The buzz for the Palm Pre has been bigger this year than all of the news on the new iPhone. Perhaps because it's the new kid on the block and the iPhone is just an upgrade to an existing model.

Mind you, it's a NICE upgrade, and I still plan on buying one.

A lot of people were on the fence this past 6 months knowing the Pre would be released and Apple would upgrade the iPhone. The 3G S is an evolutionary upgrade (certainly not revolutionary) and the new OS will allow a slew of new functionalities, not to mention being the first iPhone with 32Gb that can truly replace other devices. Mine arrives next week so won't be part of the initial weekend splash but I've no desire to be first on the block. The Pre is a worthy phone for a first gen device and I hope Palm sells enough to stabilize its business because Apple needs competition.

Let's face it folks- iPhone is it. All you salty haters out there... just go get one because they are bad a$$. I waited a few months before getting the first generation model, and I didn't get 3G because I knew they would eventually release one with video, and one that fixes all the 'minor' faults of the OG Version.

And while you are at it, go pick up a Mac- I run a top of the line PC and a iMAC G5 that's about 4 years old. The iLife '09 suite has so far been the best investment I have made as a rogue techie.

Let's all just embrace Apple- stop trying to top it, work with it, and let's change the world one app at a time.

People are getting enough done on a PC. The Mac is all fluff and no substance. If Apple didn't support PC's I am sure iPod and iPhone market share would be extremely low. So thank your lucky stars for Windows.
by lightgrw June 18, 2009 1:10 PM PDT
Mr. Dee's comment is hilarious. Do you really think people are buying Macs because they can run Windows on the systems now ? LOL

I bought the Windows emulator and haven't even used it once since purchasing it. I used Windows for a decade, but once I bought my first MAC I never went back. I remember thinking Apple was a joke too - in the days before I used Apple products. Like most, once you use iphones or MACS you realize how good they really are.

I'm a Microsoft/Windows fan and have been. I have no want or desire to own or use a Mac.

That said, I'm an iphone superfan. I'm not sure why hardcore Mac fans think that an iphone user is going to be a Mac user. I'm happy with my Windows + iphone.

I dont get it both the iphone and Pre are great phones
neither is better than the other, they are just different
but the iPhone has a lot going for it ,and everybody else has tried or is trying to emulate it one way or another
So why is buying one such a bad move ?
look how touch phones were before the iPhone and look how different they are now !
so yes the iPhone is hyped and rightly so because it has re-invented smartphones !
by bryanwalker June 18, 2009 12:30 PM PDT
This means there are at least 500,000 very stupid people out there!!!! And more to come!

Totally agree!! Palm screwed up with the treo 600 - in several ways - but they took care of that with the versions after.
by seven7dust June 18, 2009 2:14 PM PDT
so changing the battery is more important than the function of the Device ?
Hmmm ! get you priorities straight

"The Mac is all fluff and no substance."

Wow. This person does not own a Mac. I've had email since 1983, and been using computers even longer. I've spent plenty of time on Windows machines and, more recently, Mac OSX. I've been using computers daily as part of my job for the last 20 years, and I'm a software developer. I can assure you all that the quoted statement above is completely uninformed.

"apple fan boys are arrogant and naive !!!"

And the above comment is outright insulting to those who appreciate Apple products. How did you come to be such a hater?

errr, how much software do you devlope for the MAC? That's what I thought!

At this point I'd never own anything produced by Apple/MAC and find the PC World to be way more versatile and user friendly! Plus, you can purchase software for PC's!

Good grief! Well enjoy your "Pc."

Well, I won't be one of them.... I'd be willing but the iPhone without a good Voice Navigation app is a deal breaker for me. Why is Apple lagging so far behind other phones in this important application area? Tomtom supposedly is working on an app but will not announce a release date nor will say what the app will cost. Telenav has also supposedly been working on an iPhone voice navigation app which they've said for 6+ months that will be released "soon." Unbelieveable that Apple can't compete in this area!

all those apps you spoke about will be on the app store soon , with accessories to boot
So don't give up so quick ,after-all the demand for such a app is huge
and it will be eaten alive as soon as it is released,
after all developers always go towards the money
by swyve June 18, 2009 5:14 PM PDT
Yawn. The iPhone 3Gs is a great gadget but you could not pay me any amount of money to ride AT&T. That network is horrible. The iPhone cult better hope Jobs cuts ties with AT&T so you can actually use all the functions of your phone. Rumor has it that AT&T will not have the capital to finish upgrading the network. "Hello...hello...hello" Another call dropping on AT&T.

The ATL Apple Store is #2 in the number of pre-reserved iPhones. I downloaded the upgrade for my 16gb and love it. I've had email since 1987 and never owned anything but MAC. That Dell at school can't do half what MacBook Pro can. Who would want Windows on their computer?

I stood in line last year from 6am until after lunch.

I think both devices are good, just different. I owned a first gen iPhone and then upgraded to the 3g and have had good expirence with the iPhone. I am switching to the pre now for two reasons. One is Sprint offers more min and a better deal on the same package I have with AT&T and two, the pre does the multitasking I need. I own a two macs and I love them, I also own an hp that runs really well too. I'm not biased in any way. I am going to replace my iPhone with an iPod touch so I the apps I've purchased don't go to waste. :)
