Apple offers details on recent MobileMe update

by Dawn Kawamoto
Clarification at 10:00 a.m. PDT: Details about the update have been added.

Apple has disclosed information on a recent MobileMe update, offering a glimpse at the changes and fixes it made in late September to its beleaguered service.

According to information posted Wednesday, the latest known update largely affected MobileMe e-mail and calendar features--two areas that have encountered a rash of problems since the service debuted in July in less-than-perfect shape.

Apple apparently wanted to specifically point out its efforts to improve the service. "Since server-side updates are a bit more innocuous than a standard software update to Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows, it's easy not to notice that updates are occurring. Usually the only hint of these updates is that things just 'work better,'" Apple said on the update page.

The changes aim to improve the performance of its MobileMe e-mail when people log in, use Internet Explorer 7, and enable their junk-mail filter. The company also issued fixes to address problems when people "reply to all," use keyboard shortcuts, and add contacts.

Calendar enhancements include improving performance when switching views in Mozilla Firefox 3 and when dealing with a large number of "to do" items.

Other changes were also made to MobileMe Account, such as increasing the accuracy of the MobileMe data transfer details and enhancing the storage allocation menu for family pack sub-accounts.

About a month ago, Apple similarly released details on a mid-September update to MobileMe.

"Rash of problems"

Typical for a company that is only good at designing plastic and not scalable software. Mobile Crap is more like it.

Why do you hang around the Apple stories and make such childish comments?

"not scalable software" Maybe you should put down the video game controller this weekend and read:

I've been using it since I got my iPhone 3G and have not had one problem with any of the services. It is actually more reliable them my roadrunner service.

It keeps everything sync'd up on my two Mac's and the iPhone.

"Since server-side updates are a bit more innocuous than a standard software update to Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows, it's easy not to notice that updates are occurring." And that is how it should be.

Being a Dot Mac user for a few years people are right to complain about Mobile Me. I still have problems getting my mail through a browser. Many times the service has been down for more then 30 minutes (I did not keep exact times). It has really suffered in terms of speed and function. Yes, any improvement is welcome. But I do not see myself at the end of my subscription renewing. Apple has tried to do something with Mobile Me that they were not prepared to handle. When so many have asked why did you get rid of Dot Mac? That say's volumes in what Apple has done wrong.

For fun, I'm looking forward to playing Fallout 3 this weekend on my PC. Or maybe on my Xbox.

Not available on the Mac...never will be. LOL!

Sure it is you idiot. Anyone who want to play it can load it using CrossOver, which was FREE this week or by loading their own personal copy of Windows via BootCamp and playing.

Chances are, windows runs better on thier mac than on your $hit PC.

Also, the real question is... can YOU run OS X on your $hit PC.... I think not.

I have a MacBook Pro 2.5ghz (early 08 model) and am running a dual boot partition of XP. Fallout 3 plays beautifully. Better than on my friends brand new XPS.

Enjoy being educated on how OS X can run on a "PC". Which, btw, PC ENCOMPASES the mac, since it is a "Personal Computer".

MobileMe has been a great disappointment. Since its' debut I have had nothing but problems. I have contacted Apple/Mobile Me repeatedly without any satisfactory response. The only response I get is the typical apology for things not working and the assurance that someone is looking into "it". Fact is, mobileme has been a mobileMESS. I can't sync or push with the cloud making it impossible to keep my schedule up to date on all three of my Apple computers. Apple has actually put a bad "apple" in the barrel this time.

Wait, are you complaining about an update to fix a service you bought and were disapointed in. If I had bought mobile me and had the problems fixed I would not have ended up complaining about it.

The problems remain the same. There has not been a solution to my "isolated" problem. Who cares about what you would do... I'm only informing Apples loyal base and future customers. Apple has handled this issue in the worst way.

I tried using this service recently on a trip to Hong Kong and was amazed at how bad and unreliable it is. As of today I have absolutely NO RECORD of any mail that I sent, either "reply" or "new," during the whole trip. Neither do they appear in the "Sent" folder, nor the curved arrow that means a message was replied (well, in a few instances only). In many other aspects, I found it to be very clunky and unhelpful.
