The rollout of the iPhone 3G has seen a large increase in the iPhone's global Web share, according to figures released Monday.

The figures, collected by Web analytics company Net Applications, show that in June 2008, before the launch of the iPhone 3G, the iPhone had 0.16 percent share of the operating system market, as measured by OS detection during Web browsing; and in July, it had 0.19 percent.

However, as of September 1, the iPhone had 0.3 percent of global market share, an increase of 58 percent in one month. According to Net Applications, this was due to the July launch of the iPhone 3G.

"The release of the iPhone 3G has brought large gains in Web-browsing share," said a Net Applications report. "Prior to the launch, iPhone usage share had leveled off, but has since resumed its upward trend."

In the operating system market, Microsoft Windows has had dominance for many years. However, a Net Applications report showed that dominance steadily, if slowly, decreasing. Whereas in October 2007 Microsoft Windows had 92.49 percent of the operating system market, in August 2008 that figure had dropped to 90.66 percent.

This fall has coincided with an increase in market share not only for the iPhone, but also for Linux and Apple Mac. Linux has steadily increased its market share, from 0.5 percent in October 2007 to 0.93 percent in August 2008. In the same time period, Apple Mac increased its market share, from 6.58 percent to 7.86 percent.

Microsoft's dominance of browser share is also declining, somewhat faster than its OS share. Internet Explorer usage fell from 78.36 percent in October 2007 to 72.15 percent in August 2008. Over the same time period, Firefox increased its market share from 14.97 percent to 19.73 percent, while Safari usage increased from 5.09 percent to 6.37 percent.

Net Applications collects its figures from the 160 million visitors per month to its customers' sites.

Tom Espiner of ZDNet UK reported from London.

Not sure if this is relevant, but I run a fairly successful iPhone specific web site ( http://www.myhip.com/iphone.html ) and have actually noticed a decrease in visitors over the past month. I think that with the opening of Apple AppStore, a lot of users who had previously come to my site from Apple Web Apps portal, are now spending a lot time on the AppStore, and not visiting as many of the Web Apps sites as they had previously.

Yea, Crapple has 3% market share. That's why Google is

1) Releasing Chrome for Windows
2) Releasing Chrome for Linux
3) Scratching their buts and reading the paper
4) if there's time left over write Chrome for the Mac (too small/irrelevant of a market)

Some things to consider:
? Mac desktop market share is around 8%-10% compared to Linux 1%-2%
? Chrome is built on Apples webkit engine (Safari)

oh, & since Windows has the 90% share, you would be better off boycotting MS if you want to pressure China.

You misspelled "10%" (probably by now - last credible count had it at 8% six months or so ago). ;)
