Going rogue? Palin bans gadgets, reporters from speech

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is a lightning rod for controversy, but a recent attempt to keep a low profile might just result in, well, more press. The onetime vice presidential hopeful Palin, who stepped down from the governorship this summer, will be speaking at a Right to Life event in Milwaukee, Wis., on Friday evening, and her team has mandated that there are no reporters allowed--or gadgets.

According to CNN, laptops, cell phones, cameras, and anything else that could potentially be used as a recording device will not be allowed into the auditorium. Tickets to the event were $30.

It's not an unprecedented move by any means. Advance screenings of movies, for instance, regularly have a no-cell-phones policy now that just about any phone can be used as a recording device. And Palin is hardly the only high-profile politician to put a no-press, no-recording rule in place for a speech: Former Vice President Al Gore did just that for a keynote address at the RSA security conference in early 2008.

But the funny part is that banning the press will generally do very little good, since anyone with a notebook or a good memory could easily post quotes or a synopsis to a blog or Twitter account within minutes of the event ending. In this case, as with Gore's press ban at RSA, it's likely that Palin's move will just end up stirring up more buzz.

Considering her book "Going Rogue: An American Life" is coming out in a matter of days, that might ultimately turn out well--or not.

People pay money to see her? The moment this woman became a running mate of a "serious" contender for presidency was the moment I knew for sure that America has some strange ideas and strange people. And yet people still voted republican. I guess George got in twice so anything's possible. The best joke I heard was, I think, Chris rock saying, "are we ready for a black president? Well... we've already had a retard." Classic, and so sadly true. You guys have a lot of explaining to do on both of those matters.
by c|net Reader November 11, 2009 6:43 AM PST
Are you like this IRL? If you don't like how Sarah Palin manages her life or the attention she gets because of it, look away. Why must you belittle her for having different views or ideas? Why would you suggest her being mistreated because you disagree with her? Underlying your comments are some severe issues you really should address.
by AngryPaw November 6, 2009 2:12 PM PST
Two ways to go on this: 1. snarky comment about how Palin is just protecting herself from the general public, somehow making a not-so-subtle dig at her intellect, or 2. point out that articles like this simply perpetuate the very buzz that is suggested, perhaps making Palin and/or her handlers a smart bunch.

I can't decide. Use your own political persuasion to make up your own mind.

I have no doubt that the Obamaniacs would like to have Ms. Palin locked up. She is their biggest nightmare.

um, no, she is JUST a nightmare, thats all....
by jeffmorse November 6, 2009 2:45 PM PST
No, she wasn't their nightmare, she was a dream come true. If the geezer had picked a more credible candidate he might have one. Kind of the "give 'em enough rope" analogy with her.
by Perry_Clease November 6, 2009 2:50 PM PST
Quite the opposite. She may very well be the reason Obama won the election.
by expatincebu November 6, 2009 3:03 PM PST
The woman is a complete and total idiot and a fascist to boot. She should be every Americans nightmare. It is a sad commentary on the nation that a fool like her has had any political power at all, much less a following. She is a female bush, a low 60's IQ combined with total lack of moral sense, a perfect tool for the corporate elite.
by franklooper November 6, 2009 3:12 PM PST
Actually, Mr. Golfzilla, Republicans and Democrats would probably agree, just this once. We both REALLY want to see her as the GOP presidential candidate in 2012.

Obama and his people have a lot more to worry about than some screwball with a middle school education. People who keep saying they're "afraid" of her are just inflating her importance.
by clothier November 6, 2009 5:44 PM PST
She's the country's biggest nightmare. You don't want her making educated decisions.

I think Obama is looking forward to running against her and Stephen Colbert in the 2012 elections.
by daviddohoney November 7, 2009 7:27 AM PST
No, she s an asset to the Democratic Party and a source of material for comedy writers.
by jimmyhoops November 7, 2009 8:31 AM PST
Incorrect, Palin is one of the Dems BIGGEST assets. She is continuing to drive a very large wedge between moderate/conservative Republicans and the ultra conservative of the party. She is operating on a false sense of ideological purity which may solidify the base, but doesn't win elections.

It was interesting to see the ultra right wing of the party try to justify the NY 23rd. congressional race. They may have won the battle between a moderate Republican and the Conservative 3rd Party Candidate, but they lost the race and ultimately another voice in Washington.

To that I say, GO PALIN! She's doing a lovely job showing moderate people how looney the Rabid Right has become!!! In fact, I wish they would try and run Sarah Palin and Glen Beck for 2012. And maybe Rush Limbaugh could be the campaign manager. THAT'S A WINNING COMBINATION!

LOL!

Um, Obama and his followers have many other things to worry about besides Failin Palin... like the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the economic crisis that she and her ilk got us into. She's dug her own grave... and a new book isn't going to get her out of it...

Radio Host talking to Palin(who believed that he was French President Saryozy): "I loved your documentary 'Nailin' Palin'.

Palin : "Thank You"

Yup, she is as stupid as they come.
by ewsmith November 6, 2009 2:44 PM PST
Why is it OK for Michael Moore and other liberals and socialists to spew their garbage and not OK for a conservative to expound her views? Get over it. Go Sarah. I hope you sell millions of copies of your book.

it is okay for her to write a book, just as it is for Michael Moore.
by expatincebu November 6, 2009 3:06 PM PST
Michael actually writes his book, Sarah did not, it was written for her. She is not a conservative, she is a fascist, and quite frankly a low iq idiot one at that.
by clothier November 6, 2009 5:46 PM PST
No one has said it's not OK for her to promote a book (which she didn't write).
by B-Ri November 6, 2009 7:07 PM PST
Why do some people think it's ok to show a total lack of respect for someone with a different view than they do. You are right she has every right to speak her views but so do the "liberals" that you appear to hate so much. Freedom is either for everyone or no one.
by golfzilla November 6, 2009 8:15 PM PST
Hey, what the heck, we've got a left wing fascist in the White House, why not right wing fascist on the opposite side of the campaign trail? America is dying so it'll make for good sport while figuring out how to escape. Oh, for the ignorant, its "IQ", not "iq".
by Kris Linna November 7, 2009 5:11 AM PST
Just like no one has said it wasn't OK for Hillary Clinton to promote a book (which she didn't write).
by subslug November 7, 2009 9:32 AM PST
Sell a bazillion books, do what you came to do. Grab your stack of cash however you can. Isn't that what the GOP does best?
It's not like taking care of a country is of any concern to them, just get your money. It's the only reason you were ever in it to begin with.
by pentest November 7, 2009 10:04 AM PST
People show a lack of respect to Palin because she is an amoral idiot.

People like that deserve no respect.

The speech is for paid attendies. Recording is not permitted. This is not unusual at all. If I can listen to a recording of the speech on-line, why would I pay to go? Its a copyright issue as well. In addition, audience members are becoming rude as heck as they fiddle with their devices during speeches, movies, dinner, etc. If you go into someones home, you may take your shoes off. If you go to anyone that matter's speech you turn your toys off. No recording. No texting. No talking. Listen... you may learn something. This issue is not specific to Mrs. Palin.

Exactly. This way she can claim she didn't say something stupid. As for the silly argument if the speech is online why would anyone go, it won't be online live, which is why people will go, to touch the garments of Sarah Palin. There are plenty of things that wind up online that people still attend in person. So here we get the usual specious argument from a SP supporter.
by Perry_Clease November 6, 2009 6:22 PM PST
"Exactly. This way she can claim she didn't say something stupid."

Well to be fair a segment of a just about anyones speech can be taken out of context and sound completely different than the point being made.
by professionaladventurer November 6, 2009 2:51 PM PST
As a frequent punk rock concert goer when I was younger, I figured out all kinds of ways to hid stuff so minimum wage guards could not find them. Later on a professional searcher of persons for DHS, you need a bunch of chairs, metal detectors and x-ray machines to find a pair of fingernail clippers.

Good luck. Bootleg copies of the speech will be on youtube before it?s over

The 5th gen iPod Nano is super thin, has a built-in microphone, and does voice recording. A person could easily hide one in his sock or boot, perhaps.
by lvcsslacker November 6, 2009 3:04 PM PST
I've read Moore's stuff, and I'll admit I have a liberal bias... However, I wouldn't mind reading her book.

as far as this speech thing, without a doubt, people will record, that way they can accurately report on it... Ok, maybe not accurately... but you know what I mean... right?

If she uses a wireless mic, you probably could record her remarks from a police scanner radio just outside the venue. You'd have to locate the frequency, but a quick scan of the usual wireless mic channels should be fruitful.

Wouldn't be surprised if they have goons around the periphery looking for just such people. The same way Bush's people were checking all TV cameras and recording devices before his debates in 2004, you know, when he had some sort of box up the back of his jacket. The same way, when Bush was giving a speech just a few months before that, CNN picked up a broadcast on another voice speaking the same lines as Bush a few second before him, and when the voice cut out, Bush paused awkwardly.

I do not look kindly to most of her views - such as wanting to ban books. And how is it the moral high ground to favor gun rights while wanting to outlaw abortions? If the choice is between more or less choices - well I want the freedoms that our forefathers fought and died for. People like her are so scared by people that choose to think as individuals, they would reduce our rights and freedoms to nil while padding their pockets with money stolen from the poor if given the chance.
And while I choose to hate her views, I also accept that she has the right to ghost write books, give speeches, and generally live her life - I just wish she (and her kind) would grant me those same rights!
by MN_Nancy November 6, 2009 5:57 PM PST
I'm not a Palin-hater--why hate her? She is just a soccer mom (by her own admission)--from a small town in Alaska. You conservatives are the ones who have over-inflated her importance--will buy her book and pay to listen to her speak poorly. Leave us liberals alone--WE DON"T CARE about this woman.
by jimmyhoops November 7, 2009 8:36 AM PST
I know I'm smarter than she is! She's just another idiot Republican who clings to her ideology that she tries to pass off as intelligence when in fact it's merely a guise for her grade school mentality on most subjects.
by shane--2008 November 7, 2009 2:34 PM PST
yeah! stupid Palin haters! do you know what papers she reads? ALL OF THEM! beat that!

As a progressive I cared. I did not support McCain, but he probably would have been okay as President. What worried me is his health and it was quite possible he could not complete his term. Had he chosen as his running mate someone who was qualified to step into the Oval Office then I would have slept better at night.

"Only an idiot would spend $30 to go hear that moron speak."

Only an idiot would make a comment like that knowing full well that it would be offensive to a good number of people that happen to like her.

Put it this way. She's been a governor, ran for VP, does tons of public speaking and gets huge crowds and just signed a multi-million dollar book contract.... and what is that YOU'VE done that's so special that puts you in a position to tell the rest of us how dumb she is and how idiotic her supporters are?

Winning a public office has never been an intelligence credential, it only means that you can win a popularity contest. I've accomplished more in my life then she ever will. The difference is that I don't need to stand on a podium to try and prove it. I'm sure that there will be plenty of people who line up to see her. But then again, more than half of this country is of below average intelligence. As the old adage goes, 'a fool and their money are soon parted.' And based on your comments, I'm sure that includes yourself.
by jimmyhoops November 7, 2009 8:54 AM PST
No, no, no...one more thing.

To correct the record, she lost a bid for VP, she quit her job as governor (mid way through her term) and she's given a couple of highly paid speeches. That does not amount to much in terms of accomplishments, but does speak volumes about her character. What it does amount to, thus far, is being little more than a side show at a carnival.
by jezzur November 10, 2009 1:47 AM PST
bvdon, are you saying that she is impressive and brainy and deserving of, arguably, the second most powerful position in the world. If people really do think she is an impressive person and worth listening to, then no, I am not concerned about their feelings - I am concerned about education standards and rights to vote.

Maybe Palin as president? What feelings does that bring to you?
by shycelticwitch November 10, 2009 12:04 PM PST
@bvdon.... I have helped 11 people start a career in the last 2 years. I have given 12% of my salary to honest charities like St. Jude. I have volunteered at Special Olympics events and food banks. I volunteer at the local library and give free computer graphic design lessons to underprivileged kids. I do all of this without the benefit of huge crowds and multi-million dollar contracts.

This woman is a hate-monger of the worst kind, she uses deceptive communication and the media to support her misconceptions about "what America wants."

Well Ms. Palin, you're pretty far off the mark as far as what real middle class americans want. It's true there are few of us left, so our voices are being drowned out by the poor who are crying foul at the banks and big box corporations, and by the rich who are crying "foul" at the government for reprimanding the banks and big box corporations for stealing us blind.

What do we want? We want health care we can afford, interest rates we can afford, and a government who makes sure that it stays that way. What's so "liberal" or "socialist" or "elitist" about that simple request?

Soon Ms. Palin will not be able to hide these facts any longer: that her "death panels' already exist in the form of health care insurance accountants; that our current health care system is simply a profit machine with no real benefit to the general public; that at a cost of $1200 per month for a family of 3 (basic plan) health insurance is beyond the reach of anyone earning less than $15 an hour.

Think I am spouting nonsense here? Figure it out... $7.25 per hour nets the average person about $205 a week after taxes. An entire month's pay would not buy medical insurance for a family of 3. What's wrong with that picture?

Forget salary caps and whacking bonuses... let them keep what they have. Instead, raise the minimum wage to $25 per hour, or require all employers who pay less than $15 an hour to provide fully covered medical insurance to their employees.

Here's a question for ALL of you... if every person decided they were going to be a doctor, lawyer or other over-paid career choice, who would you get to collect your garbage, clean your house, service your car, etc., etc.... you know.. all those jobs that you think are worth little to nothing in compensation? Bet you'd see REAL FAST how important they are if no one was there to do them. Yet the people who do those jobs are nothing more than floor mats for you to wipe your pristine little right wingtip shoes on.

I can only say... what goes around, comes around... and I'd say the return trip has only just begun.
