Mild outages poking Facebook?

A number of us at CNET News noticed that Facebook was having some outage issues on Monday afternoon, delivering "connection to the server was reset while the page was loading" messages to members of our editorial staff in New York, Boston, and San Francisco.

The off-and-on outages would make the social network available to some while inaccessible to others, and sometimes lasted for a few minutes before coming back. Facebook has not yet confirmed the presence of outages, but a company spokeswoman said via e-mail that she was looking into it. Meanwhile, connections appear to have been restored for most of us who noticed outages.

If you've been having issues accessing Facebook today, please drop us a line in the comments section.

Yep I definitely noticed the outages. Kept saying to check my internet connection. I found that if I went to the home page, which always loaded, I was allowed to access one page from there, before I would then again receive the error. Not life threatening, but annoying none the less.

We received this message from our property manager in our downtown SF building:

Dear Tenant:

This morning around 11:00 AM you may have experienced a brief power interruption in your premises. The reason for this was a failure of PG&E equipment at the sub-station level in San Mateo which affected some customers in San Francisco. PG&E said the cause is unknown at this time and their crews are working on the repair. The estimated time of restoration should be around 7:00 PM this evening, although the time may change as the day progresses. Unfortunately, you may also feel a dip tonight once the lines are fully restored. I apologize for this inconvenience and hope that knowing ahead of time will somehow alleviate potential impacts.

I also noted that the FB search system wasn't functioning (sometime between 1400-1500 EDT) with a message saying "search is not available" ; this was while connecting from Canada.

A few moments later a colleague tried connecting and it took a good 30 seconds before FB finally responded... a few minutes later everything seemd normal, but ... we didn't spend any real time on Facebook. :)

I definitely noticed similar problems this afternoon - and just had an error message in the past 30 minutes (7:00-ish Central Time).

I encountered the same issues (main pages loading, but others did not). I don't pay to use the FB site, so life goes on. CNET you should have used this space/RSS link to tell us some more about the new iPhone ;-)

The 411 on early-termination fees

Verizon Wireless has doubled its early-termination fees for smartphones, but what does it mean for the rest of the industry?

Google has its own plan for Netbooks

No, the search giant isn't saying it will build a Netbook. But it sure knows what it would like one running Chrome OS to resemble, and that's a little different from the Netbook of today.
