Facebook confirms site instability

No, it's not just you.

Facebook confirmed on Monday afternoon that there have been sitewide problems that saw log-in credentials turned down, status messages eaten up, and other various unpleasant occurrences over the course of the past few days. But the social network, which recently surpassed 300 million active users worldwide, hasn't yet disclosed the source of the problem.

"Some users are experiencing errors across a number of site features," a statement e-mailed to CNET News read. "This includes content occasionally disappearing, difficulty logging in or viewing profiles, and error messages when posting content. We are working to resolve these issues as soon as possible."

Outages at major social media sites have drawn particular attention since a massive distributed denial-of-service attack last month threw Facebook into flux and took down Twitter altogether.

Caroline McCarthy, a CNET News staff writer, is a downtown Manhattanite happily addicted to social-media tools and restaurant blogs. Her pre-CNET resume includes interning at an IT security firm and brewing cappuccinos. E-mail Caroline.

Finally, this has been going on for at least a week now. The chat is screwy, pages load weird, it tends to freeze up when loading, etc.

I've been caught up in it too, and thought it was Firefox until I started seeing the issues in Chrome as well.

I haven't been able to stay logged in using the blackberry app since last night and some of my friends with iphones are having the same problems. Earlier today when I logged into Facebook everything was in Spanish.

All of these down times and issues has really shown that I am a Facebook addict.

Any reason Facebook can't just state the obvious and have a status page? I hate not knowing and dealing with crap problems for week - when all along they knew too. I know 300 million users is HUGE - I get it, but make sure what you already have works, before you add more crap. (gotta be impending ads or latest "functions". 10-1 it is...

It's about time the Facebook Overlords realize that their site have been PMSing.
Hopefully, they'll give the site it's needed Midol.

Amazing that it's so difficult to contact FB. I was beginning to think Firefox was the reason for all the weirdness because I'm able to use FB just fine in IE.

I have no way to update my status, accept/ignore friend requests, etc. I was on the verge of deleting my account.

Its pretty clear that someone hasn't planned well for this inevitable reality that the sheeople are addicted, and you don't want to make a herd of sheeople mad. C'mon guys! This is just a reality of what we're dealing with on a global scale...the system is breaking down because there has been a shift of real conversations and relationship communications away from copper wired telephone (POTS) and Cell Phones, and towards this new platform. Kind of makes you appreciate "the phone company" of the 1970s and 80s. Yep, it was expensive as ****. Yep, it worked...even out on the farm, even out in the middle of fricken' nowhere...even when the lights were out.

Its really time that FB starts looking at itself through the same lens that Google (and Yahoo, AOL, Sprint, ATT, Qwest, Cisco, etc.) does...as a mission-critical communications tool that MUST be built for something more than just sending stupid quizzes to others. Social media is communication...and its about time these providers start looking at their services as REQUIRING top-level security, pipes, architecture, and redundancy. Something makes me think a new wave of spending is coming for FB. Hopefully that will mean REAL SUPPORT too.

Am I the only one that can't believe someone was paid to write a four-paragraph, yet two sentence of info "article"? What's next? "Sun rises 11.5 hours after sun sets!"?

ya been getting alot of status messages from friends saying it's messing up on them, plus it seems every other time i click on an app one of the advertisements auto loads the good ole virus warning saying my comp is infected and tries to download maleware, esspecially with mafia wars and the zynga games. I have warned my friends list to watch out for the fake virus scare and that if they do download that, they are getting a virus on their system. It's an old virus doing it, I dont know why facebook hasn't caught on to the issue and taken down the advertiser doing it.

My sessions have been getting booted off TweetDeck and Trillian for a couple of days now. I rarely use either to post to Facebook but get incoming from both, so constant interruption while Facebook is asking me to re-authenticate has been getting annoying.

Oddly, I assumed it was the clients, not Facebook! I really should know better...

15 sites that went kaput in 2009

Web sites launch all the time, but they also shut their doors. We highlight 15 that bit the dust this year.

Top 10 news stories of the decade

Let the debate begin: Was the iPhone more important than iTunes? Was anything bigger than Google finding a great business model? CNET offers its list of the 10 most important stories of the '00s.

About The Social

CNET News' Caroline McCarthy is a downtown Manhattanite who believes that, despite popular opinion, the Web can actually help your social life. She's happily addicted to fun social-media tools from Twitter to Yelp to Facebook, sends an inordinate number of text messages, and has a tendency to waste time at the office reading restaurant blogs. Here, she explores all facets of the Web's gregarious side, as well as the unique tech culture in her home city of New York. (Don't call it Silicon Alley.)
