Another attack hits Twitter

Twitter's servers were on the fritz again on Tuesday, with members receiving server timeouts and third-party applications unable to access the microblogging service. This appears to have begun around 11:45 a.m. PDT.

Twitter posted an update to its status blog when the servers had been in flux for about 10 minutes: "Responding to site downtime. We're working to recover from a site outage and will update as we learn more."

The service was back up about a half hour later. At 12:17 p.m. PT, Twitter confirmed that it was an attack. "We're back up and analyzing the traffic data to determine the nature of this attack," the company said.

Outages used to be commonplace at Twitter when the small start-up's servers were unable to keep up with the massive amount of data flowing through them. They gradually became less and less frequent. But this one's particularly notable because it happens as Twitter is still reeling from a denial-of-service attack last week that targeted a Georgian activist blogger but ended up knocking Twitter's servers offline for several hours. Other services, like Facebook and LiveJournal, were also affected by the attack.

More updates when we hear them...last updated at 3:57 p.m. PT.

I use Twitter but my god. People that get excited about 30 minutes of downtime seriously need to get their priorities straight - Or are somehow making money from the site....

wow I was tweeting at the time of the outage and didn't even notice! that just shows how short the outage was, sure outages don't happen much anymore but they do happen and it's not as big a deal as everybody makes it out to be.

If ANY other website went down, nobody would care. Why is Twitter any different?

I think I'll use CNET News as a replacement for my tweets. My most important ones, anyway. Ones that cannot wait under any circumstances.

For example here's my latest: "I am tweeting on CNet News now."

Do you have more important info like what Ashton Kutcher had for breakfast?

There's such a thing as tweets "that cannot wait under any circumstances."

We're doomed.

I for one applaud any attack on the most useless waste of bandwidth and resources today.
All I can say is "get a life" to the people that do this.

Twitter is dumb and if someone can't go without it for a little bit then they are seriously addicted and need help.

How dumb is Twitter.....

1. Twitter is as dumb and useless as Google because it's a valuable search tool!
2. Twitter is dumb as the Facebook statuses you write or read your friend's statues. FB copied Twitter.
3. Twitter is dumb because it tells you the news as it happens, not an hour later. As it breaks!

Overall, it seems there are tons of ppl who still have not got it. Twitter needs to do better in this regards!

Good to see a passionte comment. I am also a Twitter user; however

Like it or not 95% of Twitter is useless stuff. And for 5% ... I think Twitter is getting way too much attention than it really should be getting.

2. Twitter is dumb as the Facebook statuses you write or read your friend's statues. FB copied Twitter.
Twitter is a blogging (micro I might add) site. Novelty YES ... New Idea NO

3. Twitter is dumb because it tells you the news as it happens, not an hour later. As it breaks!
You must have stopped reading online news sites or watching the TV. They are eqaully fast (if not faster) and provide rich content (well there is no comparision actually)

Using Twitter is fun ... but its just another Internet fad. Here today gone tommorow (MySpace anyone...)

Twitter, Twitter, Twitter--It seems as if that's all we hear about continuously. Perhaps that's a good thing as the tweeting moronic masses may tire of it more quickly. Really, are grown adults truly so bored as to waste their time on such drivel?

Let the debate begin: Was the iPhone more important than iTunes? Was anything bigger than Google finding a great business model? CNET offers its list of the 10 most important stories of the '00s.

About The Social

CNET News' Caroline McCarthy is a downtown Manhattanite who believes that, despite popular opinion, the Web can actually help your social life. She's happily addicted to fun social-media tools from Twitter to Yelp to Facebook, sends an inordinate number of text messages, and has a tendency to waste time at the office reading restaurant blogs. Here, she explores all facets of the Web's gregarious side, as well as the unique tech culture in her home city of New York. (Don't call it Silicon Alley.)
