Hulu to shock the world with Super Bowl ad

Well, well, well. Here's something that just came into my inbox, and presumably the inboxes of the rest of the digital-media press corps: an e-mail from the media team at Hulu, the joint video venture between NBC Universal and News Corp., announcing that the company will be running an ad during Sunday's Super Bowl XLIII. Considering the game airs on NBC, a Hulu ad is not too hard to fathom.

It seems like there's always a rumor about some huge tech announcement that will come to light during the annual football-and-advertising bacchanalia, like that Beatles-iTunes thing two years ago that never surfaced. But at least we know this one actually exists, and to boot, it sounds like Hulu is really hoping to make a splash along the lines of Apple's landmark "1984" ad that aired 25 years ago.

"During Super Bowl XLIII this Sunday, look for the launch of Hulu's ad campaign," the e-mail read. "Finally, we'll reveal the secret behind Hulu."

Ooh! Secrets! I love secrets! Clearly we will learn one of three things this Sunday:

1. Hulu is the Matrix.
2. Hulu is Luke Skywalker's father.
3. Hulu is people.

Aw, heck. With a revelation like this on the way, who cares whether the Steelers or Cardinals win?

Given how incompetent the Hulu marketing has appeared to be so far, I'm betting that the ad will explain that it's a website where you can stream NBC and Fox shows!

There is no secret. There is no excitement. There is only hype.

If they show porn, it may get attention. Otherwise any SuperBowl advertisement that is hyped in advance in thses recent years is probably going to be worthless.

You will get more excitement out of watching the Puppy Bowl on the Animal Planet channel: http://animal.discovery.com/tv/puppy-bowl/puppy-bowl.html

Hulu will be adding NBC's all-time great shows, like "Hello, Larry" and "My Mother, The Car"

My hype is better then your hype. Hulu is using the last of it's funding to say it is shutting down. It has been iTuned (that's right, I just verbed iTunes and then I verbed verb - you saw it here first!)

it's just going to be a 30-second long collection of clips featuring characters from various shows interacting with one another. just an endless collection of crossover fanservice. tagline: see them all together in once place. free. blah blah.

That would be awesome... I wouldn't have to go anywhere else for my shows..

Hulu is a sled. Obviously.

I hope it means that they'll keep the earlier "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" episodes, but maybe it's that you can watch the Superbowl and other sports games live on Hulu.

I hope this means that Hulu is going international. We Canadians have been deprived too long.

If they are shocking the world they had better make it International so that we can be shocked.
