Little known fact: Sarah Palin invented the Internet

by Harrison Hoffman

A new Internet meme, in the same vein as the wildly popular Chuck Norris Facts, has been spreading for the past couple of days. The subject this time around is John McCain's recently announced running mate, Sarah Palin. The "little known facts" about Palin have been flying around Twitter and a new site has even popped up, dedicated to finding the best facts. A Twitter user, Michael Turk, is credited with starting the craze.

This fast spreading phenomenon was spawned out of the lack of information about Palin when McCain announced that she would be his running mate. Here are a few of my favorites below. Take your best shot in the comments.

- Sarah Palin taught MacGuyver everything he knows.
- Sarah Palin always beats the point spread.
- Sarah Palin knows who was on the grassy knoll.
- Sarah Palin knows the last digit of pi.
- Sarah Palin wants more cowbell.
- Sarah Palin invented the Rick Roll.

The amazing part of this site and other microblog'ish sites (e.g. http://barackobamaisyournewbicycle.com or sarahpalinisyournewsnowmachine.org) is they often, while trying to be humorous, strike fairly close to the truth. And sadly, I'm often left with "I wish I had thought of that". Thanks Harrison for the link.

WRONG. This reporter just doesn't get it. This fast-spreading phenomenon was spawned out of the amazing personal history of Sarah Palin: moose hunter, beauty queen, basketball star, ice fisher, corruption fighter, marathon runner, mother of five, etc.

@WCVarones I agree, but part of the reason that this meme works is because all of these crazy things have been recently uncovered because she was relatively unknown outside of Alaska before this week. So, even though they are poking fun at her amazing past hobbies and achievements, the whole thing is also a spoof on the news organizations who have been scrambling to inform the public on who Sarah Palin is, by feeding us all of these facts about her (moose hunter, beauty queen, basketball star). Thanks for raising that point though. Good comment.

Mother of five....
....with a special needs baby aged 3 months, who she leaves in the care of others, and doesn't breastfeed, because she's too busy.
...with a 17- year-old pregnant daughter who apparently didn't believe that "abstinence" was the Way, and could've used some birth control information from her absent mother.

Corruption fighter... who is being investigated for firing someone who refused to fire her ex-brother-in-law without cause.

Gustav shakes things up a bit, but I wonder if Palin's TV ratings will top Obama's. I bet they do, since no one knows who she is and we want to check in and watch.
Insigntful column on how this might play out at:

Sarah Palin is so tough, even Chuck Norris calls her "Sir."
