Strike-ortunity.

by The Macalope

If the Macalope were Steve Jobs, he'd be sending big-assed fruit baskets to each of the striking writers (tip o' the antlers to BoingBoing).

As Alex Lindsey has noted several times on MacBreak Weekly, Apple is about one step away from offering an end-to-end solution for video development and distribution for independent producers. Even if it's not ready to pull the trigger for technological or political reasons, it's a great time to make some friends.

Mythical beast and rumormonger extraordinaire, the Macalope writes about all things Apple for the CNET Blog Network. Read more at The Macalope: An Apple blog. He is not an employee of CNET. Disclosure.

As much as I'd like to endorse you on this, I have to say out of personal self-interest I'd prefer this not happen... mainly because I'm employed at a major post-house. Already work for the spring season is drying up and the company is having to take "cost-saving measures." Which is to say, making me use my PTO and then take unpaid forced time off.

Let's just convince the networks to start giving the writers a fair cut and everybody just get back to work, eh? I'd prefer to not be evicted.

Concisely put, Mr. Lope. I am very much enjoying the slow progression of entertainment production and distribution away from those old, loathsome cigar-chewing gatekeepers. If I'm lucky, I'll live to see all of my entertainment and information available, á là carte.

If the networks and movie studios are determined to pander to the lowest part of the audience, I'd rather be elsewhere.

One step away? Try zero steps away. The new iMovie posts directly to YouTube. There's your complete end-to-end solution.

Oh wait, do you mean real content? Made by writers and actors and directors and stuff?

After 5 years, Firefox faces new challenges

Mozilla helped reshape the Web since releasing Firefox 1.0 five years ago. Now it's got a reawakened Microsoft and Google Chrome to reckon with.

There's a map for that: GPS or smartphone?

Almost every handset comes with mapping software these days, but standalone GPS devices are becoming more affordable than ever.

Long-eclipsed by his more prodigious cousin, the jackalope (they breed like rabbits, you know), the Macalope's time has come. Apple news and rumormonger extraordinaire, the Macalope provides a uniquely polymorphic approach. He is a member of the CNET Blog Network and is not an employee of CNET. Disclosure.
