Capturing the excitement

It's all over but the shouting and it looks like Apple's hit another home run. No Beatles, but Apple did announce:

  • Roll-your-own ringtones for 99 cents.
  • The "fat" nano, a squarish nano with coverflow and video. 4 GB for $149, 8 GB for $199.
  • Higher capacity "classic" iPods. 80 GB for $249 and 160 GB for $349.
  • The new iPod Touch, which is basically an iPhone without the phone. $299 for 8 GB and $399 for 16 GB. Coming in a couple of weeks.
  • A version of the iTunes Store for both the iPod Touch and the iPhone.
  • The ability to buy songs from the iPod Touch and the iPhone at Starbucks stores.
  • The 8 GB iPhone is now $399.

The Macalope hates to rub it in (no, not really), but it's worth repeating this:

"If it brings out a product that doesn't capture the excitement . . . I wonder if people will be disappointed because it doesn't come up to the levels of what's expected," Enderle said.

Oh, Rob. Don't you ever get tired of being wrong?

Excitement? NO!!! EXTREME ANGER!!
by apple4ever September 5, 2007 12:02 PM PDT
How can I be excited? They dropped the iPhone price by $200 in TWO MONTHS!
I'M PISSED!!!

And paying to make songs I already own ringtones? Screw that! I'll use
iFuntastic, or any of the other free tools to make standard songs ringtones.

Wow! I've been waiting a couple years to upgrade my 80gb Photo iPod, which I bought nearly 3 years ago (I know because my BestBuy extended service plan is about to expire). I've been holding out for the widescreen, iPhone-like iPod, which is now here! Now I have to decide if I want to re-think my media storage strategy from "take-it-all-with-me-wherever-I-go" to "take-just-what-I-need". The iPod Classic with 160GB looks mighty appealing to someone like me, with tons of audio and video content. But I think the deciding factor will end up being what it always has been with the iPod line - "cool factor" will win out every time. Looks like I'm headed towards an iPod Touch 16GB future...

£199 ($400) for the 8GB iPod touch in Britain. Costly of course but tempting for this first gen nano clutcher ? who has ideas re: Safari. (My collection is totally flash unfriendly but I adjusted to that years ago with the Zen philosophy to pack sparingly ? oh and trust your Smart Playlists.)

I've got to see the reviews to find out how well Gmail and various iPhone optimised sites work with that thing. Yes: I'm one of the Mac Tablet freaks from forever and I'm itching to find out how much can be squeezed from that svelte new iPod which unlike certain other multitouch models *will* actually be coming to a store near me soon!

Short sellers on Apple
by BostonGuy September 5, 2007 1:32 PM PDT
The bloody short sellers are streaming out of the woodwork like roaches. Apple
is down over 5 percent as of 4:30 EST. They are again driving down the price for
everyone else so they can buy lots more cheap. Bastards.

I would not bet against Apple releasing some sort of tablet-ish new Mac with
the release of Leopard- surely they will release something COOL to go with their
spanking new OS. I wouldn't be buying any Mac til next month.

Not much excitement here either...
by Dave Metzener September 5, 2007 3:13 PM PDT
99¢ for 30 seconds of a song that I already own? I can't make ringtones from songs that I put into iTunes from CD's?

I suspect that this is another example of the record industry thinking that they can control people who listen to music. Well, all it's really going to do is help companies like Ambrosia Software with it's iToner program. Given a choice of paying 99¢ per ringtone or $15 once for as many ringtones as I can make, I think the choice is pretty damn easy! Ambrosia wins!

As for the iPhone going down in price. Yeah, I figured it would happen sooner or later, but I didn't expect 2 months! Sheesh, my MacBook has held it's value better than the phone has. I get the impression that Apple isn't selling as many phones as they thought they would, so lowering the premium price to something a little more reasonable is there answer.

Now, I know that buying a 1.0 product and on the bleeding edge like I did, sure I expect to pay a premium. But 2 months!

I am pretty impressed with the new iPod Classic(? Has Apple been taking notes from Coca-Cola or something?) is a nice change. 160GB's of storage in the iPod now. Wow, that is a ton of storage. It really seems a little too much actually. Who has 160GB's of music, audiobooks and podcasts? I didn't mention movies, because really, who wants to watch a movie on the iPod Classic's tiny screen?

The iTunes Store on the phone and new iPod Touch will be interesting. It should help the iTunes store sell even more songs.

Overall, na, this was not one of the best announcement days I have seen from Apple.

So much more? You mean gaming, right? Not a big deal for everyone.

The PSP lacks:

- iTunes integration
- multi-touch
- that gorgeous iPhone UI
- freedom from Sony's curious choices in interface design
- class

not to mention:
- friggin' SAFARI!

To be fair though: the PSP does beat the Zune and Zen. So does a last generation iPod. And I hear the Nintendo DS is sweet little thing if you happen to like games too?

Even worse, you have to pay for the ringtones. Every windows mobile user knows you can make any song on the phone into a ringtone by copying its to the sound folder. What coolaid are apple supporters drinking that lets them listen to steve jobs?

Only a hog will pay for these ringtones.

15 sites that went kaput in 2009

Web sites launch all the time, but they also shut their doors. We highlight 15 that bit the dust this year.

Top 10 news stories of the decade

Let the debate begin: Was the iPhone more important than iTunes? Was anything bigger than Google finding a great business model? CNET offers its list of the 10 most important stories of the '00s.
