iPhone firmware update 2.0 is live -- kinda

So this morning I got my hands on the new iPhone firmware update 2.0 from a direct link through Apple's site. So far, the Apple page is still saying that it's coming soon and there's no update through iTunes, but by following that link, you'll be all set.

All in all, the installation went relatively well and I was happy to see that it didn't take so long to download it and get it up and running.

So what's in it?

There's a lot to like in the new update for the iPhone. It comes with a link to the App Store (which works) and has all the pushing you're going to want out of it -- calendar, email, contacts -- and Exchange support.

I installed three apps -- Twitterific, AIM, and the Associated Press Mobile News Network -- to test them out and found that the install was smooth, quick, and happened without a hitch.

I've only spent about thirty minutes with the new firmware update and so far, I like it. It would have been nice to see Apple surprise us with a few extras, but I guess we can't ask for everything.

More on this as I keep playing around with it, but I definitely recommend downloading the update (and the new iTunes 7.7) to get a feel for each yourself.

Hold down SHIFT and click RESTORE in Itunes. Then browse to the file.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.

Download the file, plug your iPhone in, hold the option key down while clicking update in the Summary tab and choose that file. Once that happens, you should be all set.

It's actually a very simple process. Follow the steps and you'll get the firmware on your iPhone.
1. Open iTunes 7.7 (Make sure you've installed it)
2. Plug-In Your iPhone and have iTunes detect it (you should see it in the left column)
3. On the main screen for the iPhone, you should see two buttons "Update" and "Restore." Holding the SHIFT key, click on "Restore". This should prompt either Finder or WIndows Explorer to show up. Locate the 2.0 firmware and select it.
4. iTunes will now clear your iPhone and put the firmware on it
5. Once your iPhone restarts, Presto! you have iPhone 2.0. Good luck! :)

My iPhone is unlocked and jailbroken (using iLiberty+). Can I install 2.0 ? or will I be bricked?

Wow, is that a serious question? I'm surprised you haven't bricked your phone already. At any rate, I would recommend that you ask your "source" to test out the new software on a "tester" iPhone that they can afford to sacrifice in case something goes south (very wrong).

How misleading!
The "direct link through Apple's site" is NOT a link to an apple site.

Ok. Just installed 2.0 through iTunes 7.7. My phones rebooted, and wont let me do anything. It has a picture of iTunes and a USB cable indicating I need to plug it into iTunes as if I have to active it. I plugged it into iTunes and it attempts to lead the Apple Store, although then comes up with Time Out. When I select iPhone in itunes it just tried to load the store, wont let me restore it or anything. Any help?

Failed to restore. Although tried pluggin it into iTunes again and awaiting iTunes Store to load. After almost 20 attempts it connecting. It is currently restoring a backup of my files from before 2.0 was installed. the screen now says "iPhone Activiated" so its looking good.
