I just don't care about the 3G iPhone anymore

by Don Reisinger

Call me a cynic, but I just don't care about the 3G iPhone anymore. It's nothing personal. And in all honesty, I know that I'll pick one up the day it's out. I'm just sick and tired of the constant bombardment of rumor stories that keep cropping up all over the place.

Haven't we grown out of that phase yet?

The 3G iPhone will probably offer a ton of improvements to the current device and there will undoubtedly be millions across the globe just waiting for it to hit store shelves. And who can blame them? After being forced to use a ridiculously locked-down device that doesn't offer nearly everything we wanted in the first go-round, just about everyone is left waiting for its follow-up.

And while the excitement is palpable and people are flocking to any story that even hints at the release of the iPhone, I sit here wondering when all the madness will end. Will it sport a new design? Will it have GPS installed? Will it have a smaller form factor? Will it have an improved interface?

I don't know and I don't care.

In the past two minutes alone, I've found six, yes, six, rumor stories about what the 3G iPhone will look like. Believe it or not, they were all written over the past three days.

One shows some pictures of the possible 3G iPhone casing. Yawn.

Another reports that the 3G iPhone may be available in mid-June. Wow. Now there's a shocker.

Still another tries to tell us what we already know about the iPhone and discusses what the ramifications may be if the 3G iPhone fails. My guess? Apple will be upset and it'll get out of the cell phone business. Gee, what a stretch.

And while the list can go on, I find myself falling asleep just looking over those three articles. I understand that the 3G iPhone is a hot-button issue right now and people care about its future, but doesn't it get old to anyone else besides me?

Why should I be inundated with 3G iPhone news when all I really want to know is what's going on in the tech industry? Surely that's not too much to ask, right?

Of course, the reality of the situation is reflected in the inordinate amount of mind share Apple commands over the entire industry. Although companies like Microsoft and Dell don't want to admit it, Apple is far and away the most sought-after company in the industry and there's really no reason to suggest that it'll change any time soon.

But what interests me about the 3G iPhone rumor mill is not that it's so lively -- that's always to be expected -- but that it's getting excited over things that, well, aren't all that exciting.

The iPhone will have 3G? OK. It will have a new form factor? Sure. Apple is being tight-lipped about its future and few details are slipping out? That's to be expected. Other than that, the rumor mills are shooting in the dark in an attempt to bring people to their sites. In reality, they're just wasting our time.

And perhaps that's where my real issue with the 3G iPhone really is. It's not that I don't want the 3G iPhone -- I definitely do. And it's not that I don't like Apple, it's simply that I'm sick and tired of reading about a product that obviously no one knows anything about. Sure, rumors are nice and I like to read about them as much as the next person, but after a while, it gets old and boring.

I don't care about the 3G iPhone, I just want it. Soon. I don't care if it has GPS or a new form factor because it'll have the one thing that I've wanted all along anyway: 3G.

I'm with you buddy, I feel exactly like you feel, and don't really care that much for the features or the form factor, I just want 3G on my iPhone, Edge just doesn't cut it for me.

i want to know about it ahead of time about GPS so i know if i should just go ahead and replace my lost iPhone with a refurbished 16g or not. 3g doesn't matter to me because I'm not in a covered area, but GPS??? Oh hell yes.

Here's another rumor, indication of Mac OS 10.6 found in the latest iPhone SDK BETA. The rumors really have reached a height of extremes and with the many sites out there dedicated to everything Apple there is definitely a kind of sensational 24-7 news channel type of problem. But its an advantage for Apple. I am an advantage for Apple although I don't own any of their products, you are an advantage to Apple. Why? We give the company probably about half a billion dollars in free advertising. My mother, my siblings, my sister in law, my nephew and my friends all know about the iPhone. Its worst probably from your end since you are at the heart of the industry as a technology blogger with CNET. For me its a little more normal being as I live in Jamaica where information and availability remains limited.

You're just sore that Microsoft isn't releasing a phone anytime soon. I've been reading your blog for a while, and your pro-Microsoft, anti-Apple fanboyism is shining through VERY brightly in this article.

If you are so sick of the iPhone, why are you spending so much time looking at rumor sites and blogging about it? Jealous?

You don't care about the 3G iPhone, you just want a 3G iPhone? That makes no sense. Obviously you DO care about a 3G iPhone. Maybe you are tired of reading the hype and the rumors surrounding the new iPhone coming out so you decided to write an article talking about all the hype and rumors surrounding the iPhone which once again makes no sense. Pot meet kettle.

Um, didn't you just contribute a news story about the 3G iPhone though? Your just feeding the beast...

That said, I agree that the conflicting rumors are annoying, but sometimes they get things right. I can't wait to get my hands on one though!
