GTA is coming to your iPhone.

Rockstar Games, the developers behind the Grand Theft Auto series, announced on Monday that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be coming to Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch this fall.

The developer also announced that Beaterator, an app that allows users to create "world-class beats and songs," will also be made available on the App Store. Like the Chinatown Wars title, Beaterater is slated for availability this fall for an undisclosed price.

Chinatown Wars gives gamers control over Huang Lee, a member of the Triad crime syndicate, who travels to Liberty City to investigate his father's death. iPhone and iPod Touch owners will be able to control Lee as he travels through the streets of Liberty City.

Chinatown Wars is currently available on the Nintendo DS. It's coming to the Sony PlayStation Portable in October. According to Rockstar, it made perfect sense for the handheld title to make its way to Apple's mobile devices.

But since it has been ported from traditional handheld game devices, I asked Rockstar if iPhone owners will see much of a difference between the Nintendo DS or Sony PSP versions and the iPhone version.

Rockstar said there will be some textures that will look low-res, compared to the PSP version, but other than that, the game is exactly the same.

That comes as a surprise, considering that the typical content featured in a Grand Theft Auto game has clashed with Apple's policies against adult-theme material finding its way to into the App Store. Apple denied access to Eucalyptus, an e-book reader application, because it allowed users to find and read the Kama Sutra. Apple even denied access to Ninjawords, a dictionary app, because it contained vulgar words.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars promises a typical GTA experience, complete with the sexual content and vulgar words that have made it such a controversial franchise. Rockstar told me that it had no trouble with Apple's App Store policies and that the game will be made available as is.

Rockstar also said that controlling the on-screen character will be slightly different than what gamers are used to with other handhelds. According to the company, the game will display an on-screen analog stick that users will be able to control with their thumb. The developer wouldn't reveal any more information about the game.

Wow as much as I hate the iphone as a gaming platform....they seem to be getting more and more developers. Nintendo, sony better watch out because apple is becoming a much bigger competitor.

"Becoming"? Apple already is a huge competitor. There are already many more games for the iPhone than there is for the Nintendo DS and PSP put together. If Apple can release a low-cost iPod Touch next week at the September 9th media event they'll become the Wii of the handhelds.

Sure it has more games, but they are basically time wasters. In my opinion the iPhone is not capable of having good games that would be fun for more than 30 minutes at a time. I would rather play a full game on my psp then "Airport Simulator" on iPhone. And no I am not an apple hater or a fanboy this, I just don't like the gimmick.

I would say that the iPhone is already a huge competitor, you have access to thousands of games and you don't need to carry around an extra gaming device to use them and the games are so cheap! I have a PSP and I haven't used it since the app store opened I mean sure the games on the iPhone are not as pretty as the PSP's but for a couple bucks each I can't complain. Also more and more known developers are are coming to the iPhone and pricing the the same game that goes for $60 on other platforms for $10 on the iPhone/iPod touch

Rockstar needs to be spending their time recoding GTA IV for the PC. That's the worst port I have ever seen. That thing is so cpu intensive it's unplayable on the majority of home PCs, and no mine isn't a crap system.

I agree completely. My system ran crysis at max settings no problem but gta4 ran at about 2fps at lowest settings. After Rockstar's unusable 'bully" port and now this, I think that they have written off the p.c. as a platform. I won't be buying anything form them again.

so it's a port of a game released on DS.. yeah, wow, Nintendo better watch out...

too bad we can't see how the sales will be compared to the DS ($30) and PSP ($40) versions

iPhone should be considered a portable game system. Check out all these awesome games coming for it. Doom 3, Resident Evil 4, and the graphics are just as close as the original games on the original game consoles!!

yeah but the iphone has no buttons. That's kind of a turnoff considering every single game console in the past portable and not had buttons. A touch screen analog stick would suck.

@deathshrimp
They have touchscreen analog sticks in bugdom, and brothers in arms, and a few more

Aren't them making or have a external controlled touch pad that you slide your ipod in to to play certain games?

@abundantsnotbob

Touch screen controls are never as good as their tactile counterparts when it comes to things like analog movement, or buttons. Even in games like assassins creed and brothers in arms, a d-pad would do wonders.

If Apple would just go ahead and make an officially endorsed controller enclosure with real thumbsticks on it, I think it'd take the iPhone and Touch into a whole new level. It absolutely has to come from Apple, though. If it came from a third party, the game developers would be much less likely to base their software on it since it wouldn't have Apple backing it.

With Apple making it, however, every gaming company could be confident in knowing that they have a standardized controller, and a standardized button mapping, that all iPhone/Touch users would have access to. If the controller came from a third party, users wouldn't know whether to buy that one, or some other third party controller that would inevitably come out.

Strongly agree. If it came from a third party, they would have to ensure endorsement and full support by at least one of the bigger publishers, like Gameloft, Digital Chocolate, EA or Chillingo. This would give the controller some critical mass to jump over 1 mio users. At launch, there would have to be a handful of games immediately available. I don't think this would be too hard for games that were merely ported from other platforms and only had the hardware buttons replaced with software buttons overlayed on the screen.

Another problem for third parties would be Apple's product pipeline. Whenever a new iPhone or iPod Touch came out, gamers would have to wait 3 to 6 months for the updated controllers. For that problem to minimize, the third party would have to reach critical mass, too, in order to become a strategic partner of Apple and gain early access to hardware specs.

It will be interesting to see how they manage to design the controls for this one. I have the game for the DS and some missions in GTA:CW can be quite challenging with controls that were made for gaming.

Hahah wow...Apple really needs to lay down those app guidelines because its starting to sound like they bully the small companies and pardon the big one.

That's great but what about the size of the game? .. how Rockstar games is going to handle disk space? And I would like to see this game on my Nokia 5800 ..

For the sake of the AppStore and their own revenue, I hope they start at a high price point of $19.99 or at least $14.99. Succeeding price drops are inevitable, but a AAA title cannot make a profit on a $0.99 or even $4.99 price point. $9.99 would barely be manageable, but only if they can refrain from price drops.

Referring to the post, Apple does not block mature content, they merely rate it. There were some delays this spring because parental controls were to be introduced and Apple badgered several app developers that their apps should be rated 18+, which prolonged the approval process. Thus Eucalyptus became an 18+ app which cannot be downloaded by kids. No app was denied from the AppStore.

Grand Theft Auto has long thrived on supposedly being raunchy and mature and will be happy to carry the 18+ badge on the AppStore as it did on the Nintendo DS and Sony Playstations. In some way, CNet is kickstarting Rockstar's new marketing campaign by focussing on this non-issue.

Wow so google can't publish an app for the iphone, but beating up hookers on it is cool. Guess even Steve Jobs likes to take it out on hookers every once in a while.

There is already a GTA like game on the iPhone called GangStar and it is 3rd person 3D like the PS2 and HD versions, not old school birds eye like Chinatown wars.

For $7, it is a great steal if you like GTA and like playing on the iPhone and iTouch.
