Forget the PS3 Slim. How about a slim Xbox 360?

Over the past few months, much of the talk in the video game industry has surrounded Sony and its rumored PlayStation 3 Slim. The product, if it exists, promises to be smaller and, more importantly, cheaper.

Xbox 360

This console needs to slim down, too.

(Credit: Microsoft)

I'll be the first to admit that I'm excited about the possibility of the Slim hitting store shelves. I've called on Sony multiple times to drop the price of the PlayStation 3. I believe that it's the key to Sony staying relevant during this generation of game consoles.

But as the PS3 Slim kept us guessing, a report hit the Web on Wednesday claiming that Microsoft might be planning to ditch the Xbox 360 Pro in favor of offering just two Xbox 360 models--the Arcade and the Elite. Great. But what about a refresh?

The Xbox 360 is a beast. It's huge. Its DVD drive is extremely loud. And its power supply is both big and heavy.

The Xbox 360 is also not nearly as reliable as competing products. Since its release, we've been inundated with story after story about the "red ring of death"--an issue that occurs when three red rings around the Xbox 360's power buttons start flashing, indicating that the console is inoperable and will need to be shipped back to Microsoft to have it fixed.

The number of reported RROD instances has dropped in recent months, but it has left Microsoft with a black eye from which it has yet to recover.

So as Sony improves its hardware offerings, I think that it's clear that Microsoft needs to do the same. It needs a slim Xbox 360.

Why it's necessary
I think that a slim Xbox 360 would help solve almost all of Microsoft's problems. It would potentially fit nicely into existing home theater set-ups. If it lived up to its name, the Slim would also ditch the power brick. Its new power supply would be smaller and much more manageable. Those two updates alone would make many current Xbox 360 owners happy.

But it goes beyond that. A slim Xbox 360 can be Microsoft's "do-over." It will address the issues the console has experienced, like that awfully loud DVD drive. It will also fix the Xbox 360's failure issues that just don't seem to go away. More importantly, it could address one of the console's biggest shortcomings: a lack of an HD drive.

Yes, I believe that a slim Xbox 360 should feature a Blu-ray drive. I know that it would be like giving money to the enemy, format backer Sony, but given Blu-ray's rise in popularity this year, I don't think that Microsoft has much of a choice. Until streaming HD content has reached critical mass and entered millions of homes, Blu-ray is still the leading, next-gen home entertainment format.

Although we can currently access streaming content through the Xbox 360, it's not enough. A Blu-ray drive allows Microsoft to fend off Sony's core argument, which states that because the PlayStation 3 has a Blu-ray drive, it's worth its $400 price tag. It's a valid argument. It's also an argument to which Microsoft, without a Blu-ray drive in its Xbox 360, doesn't have an answer. That's unacceptable.

Looking ahead
At this point, I have no doubt that Sony will be releasing the PS3 Slim sometime in the near future. It makes perfect sense for the company, since it's trying desperately to regain lost market share.

Microsoft should follow suit. The Xbox 360 is a great console. I enjoy playing games on it. But it's not perfect. It's in desperate need of a refresh. And a slim Xbox 360 might just be the way to make more consumers happy. More importantly, it could help Microsoft fend off Sony's rise in the market if a PS3 Slim is released.

I don't care how big a new XBox is as long as its reliable. My Xbox is in Texas right now for the 3rd repair in 3 years.

I feel truly sorry for you.
I have got my ps3 since launch 60gb, backwards compatible etc, never had a problem that wouldnt be solve with a simple restart. I know though, that the "my console is better" is rather childish at this point and im going to try to avoid it although i implored it here to make something clear.Sony= hardware company Microsoft= software company
Wiht that in mind, i think is good to notice that while microsoft might well do-over with a slimed down xbox 360 my hopes wouldnt be any higher than where they are now. I owned a 360 and had to sell it because i ran frustrated with the 2 RRODs but also, had a broken fan (came back like that, had to re-ship) and one of them wouldnt read certain games. I do say that 360 had a more appealing list of games, had perhaps (this is subjective) a rather good looking user interface but that its all blown away with the hassle of all of its STD's. The main reason why im not trusting what this article has to say and all of the sweetness a new model of the xbox will bring is because that is exactly what microsoft said when they introduced the new nano chips. they did bring down the 33.3 percent failier rate, but is still not even in part with the wii or the ps3. The 360 can be had already for very cheap which is why i think that a slimmed down version will be nothing more than a new casing in hopes of bigger sales. The ps3 in the other hand needs one badly because they are lagging behind and this unforgiving economy can keep even a big company like sony on its feet...............

I don't really like Xbox consoles..lots of errors, no info on how to fix just a big bill when you pay someone to do it. I bought a guid, fixed mine in 30 minutes ;)

Check it out if you have problems

Slim and redesigned "would make many current Xbox 360 owners happy"?? How, by making them spend money to buy another new console that offers no tangible performance improvements? Sure, it'd be great to be smaller, lose the megabrick and (hopefully) be more reliable, but do you really think millions of 360 owners will abandon their perfectly good systems to "upgrade" to what's essentially the same hardware?

Amen to that brotha. If I were in the market for an Xbox, I might like it to be smaller. Since I already own one...how is a new one gonna make me happy? Microsoft gonna ship all the existing customers a new shiny thinner Xbox?
by sting7k August 6, 2009 6:42 AM PDT
The only possible way I would get a slim 360 is if my elite broke (would make my 5th broken one) and Best Buy let me swap it out (product replacement plan is totally worth it on the 360) for the slim one. Otherwise the one I have is fine. My newest one the DVD drive also makes MUCH less noise than my old ones, so I think they have made progress there.

Quieter and no RROD / E74, and yes even I might buy one again. Well I am a gamer after all and my biggest problem against M$ was the fact they released such an unreliable peace of hardware.

The 360 does not need a BR drive. When I am using the 360 I am playing games. When I watch movies, I am always playing games. I love Netflix, but plan on getting a BR player with Netflix included because I never get to use it because I am using my 360 to play games.

It would actually be a good thing if M$ had a cooling upgrade to prevent the RRoD. Nyko apparently failed miserably with their product... maybe M$ would be able to do this for their customers under warranty or for a low price? Sure, they would lose money, but it would be more of a PA stunt than any, which would be a good thing for the company.

Adding BR to the 360 would be a bad business venture, and it's arguable to see whether M$ gives in and gives the 360 that kind of versatility as a home entertainment solution, or not and focus solely on its partnership with streaming HD content via Netflix.

Regardless, the 360 had a good run, and IMO it would be unwise to keep releasing variants of the same console instead of putting more focus on the next best thing. (Releasing new accessories, however, can rake in some good revenue.)

But if M$ made Xbox's reliable then theyre loyal xbot trolls wouldnt have a reason to buy 20 of the same consoles.
by rayzoredge August 6, 2009 7:22 AM PDT
Oops... not to mention the whole slim thing, but if you pack in a handful of high-heat-producing components into a smaller form factor, wouldn't there be more of a reliability issue? Or will M$ get it right this time?

I persuming his planning would include them redesign the components and building ones which does not produce as much heat and use less energy.

Awww, the poor liddle Xbot Donny is terrified of the PS3 Slim.

Xbox 360 - Worst Console In The History Of Gaming:

* Wimpy and poorly designed graphics hardware. Still clinging to the pathetic old fake Epic Gears of War marketing bullshots as proof of 'teh power of teh 360' LOL!

* The only console in history to have less disc space than the previous gen - only 7 gigabytes for the stupid 360 DVD format compared to 8.5 gigabytes last gen for the PS2 and Xbox. A total nightmare for developers to deal with the 360 and what has ruined major games like GTA4.

* Stupid old DVD drive spinning at an insane rate making the console absurdly loud

* Retarded 50 dollar a year online charges. Laggy P2P networking and no dedicated servers like on PC and PS3 games leading to gimped player counts like only 16 for Halo 3 and 10 for Gears of War

* Anemic first party studios. Only Rare, Lionhead, and Turn 10. Compared to 10 first party studios for Nintendo and 20 for Sony.

What a complete POS console. And now the only thing to look forward to are:

* Halo milking

* Downgraded PC ports

* Microsoft's copy of Sony's Eye Toy style motion controls

No way man, SNES is way better than Sega Genesis. Mode 7 man....Mode 7!!!
by dmoo88 August 6, 2009 8:40 AM PDT
okay fanboy calm yourself down. while almost everything you said is bs, the thing that amused me the most was how you think that microsofts full body sensing technology in project natal is a copy of sony's magic wand. that thing is an uglier rip off of the wii's controller if anything.

btw, $199 for a 360 + $50 a year for a kick a** online experience beats the hell out of a $399 console an online experience thats not worth anyones time.
by scaught78 August 6, 2009 8:49 AM PDT
I thinkWrightSKL is upset because he is trying to justify all of the allowance money he saved up and spent on the PS3.
by WrightSKL August 6, 2009 8:58 AM PDT
Forget the RRoD fiasco, it is the wimpy 360 graphics hardware that is the most embarrassing thing about the Xbox 360.

There never has been another console generation where a console has been totally and utterly humiliated by its competitor like the 360 has by the PS3 this gen.

PS2,GameCube,Xbox all had games that weren't possible on the other consoles.

SNES and Genesis both were strong in different areas.

The PS2 did destroy the Dreamcast, but not anywhere near as much as the PS3 is graphically destroying the wimpy Xbox 360 this gen.

And now with the massive hit to Microsoft's revenue and profits this wimpy and underpowered console is what Xbots are stuck with nothing but silly motion controls tacked on to try to extend the life of the turd of a console.

With 360 graphics a complete joke in 2009 just imagine how laughably bad they are going to be in 2010/11 while waving your arms around like idiots playing silly motion control games.
by Chosenbarly August 6, 2009 10:17 AM PDT
But you wanna know whats really funny, people are still chooseing the console with the life span of a butterfly over a PS3,which is the Xbox360 no matter how many times they have to ship back.Matter of fact fanboy i know some people that that may not feel like waiting to get there Xbox360 with RRod repaired so they just buy 360 after 360.Thats exactly how much the 360 is better than the PS3.*sob* *sob*
by Landoram August 6, 2009 10:24 AM PDT
I've owned a PS3 since it was released, and love it, but even I don't know what planet you're on to say,

"There never has been another console generation where a console has been totally and utterly humiliated by its competitor like the 360 has by the PS3 this gen."

What? You epitomize the "Fanboys" I always see referenced on these posts. They are quite funny, though!
by spiterod August 6, 2009 10:28 AM PDT
Good lord boy. What are you 12? Nothing you've said is even worth countering, it's all just obvious fanboy ravings. Go play your PS2. Shut up. And pray daddy saves up enough cash to buy you a PS3 this year.
by Shaymojack August 6, 2009 10:37 AM PDT
Wright, you ARE being payed to comment this stuff on tech sites, right? I REALLY hope so.
by WrightSKL August 6, 2009 10:40 AM PDT
It is hilarious how the PS3 exclusive games so completely humiliate the wimpy 360 exclusives graphically that it is now considered 'trolling' on many gaming message boards because 'it isn't being fair' for pointing the painfully crushing truth to the Xbots who so desperately wish their wimpy little console wasn't so poorly designed and massively underpowered.

The funniest thing about the wimpy Xbox 360 graphics is it has turned Xbots into sounding exactly like Wii-fanboys:

"We don't care about shallow things like 'graphics', we only care about gameplay"

LOL! The silly crap you start spouting after a good asskicking like the PS3 has dished out graphically to the 360 this gen.
by WrightSKL August 6, 2009 10:43 AM PDT
LOL!

Xbots trying to accuse someone of 'astroturfing'!

Hilarious!

Fanboys of the sleazy company, Microsoft, that made the practice of paying people to sit around in forums spouting BS famous are trying to accuse someone else of the disgusting practice.

Priceless and pathetic.

Gimme a slim 360 that's quieter, built-in wifi and a slot loading dvd drive and I would get it. That would be awesome.

I agree, quieter and built in wifi would be huge. The 360 is loud as hell even when you aren't playing a game. Sometimes I have to turn up my receiver even louder when streaming a Netflix movie because I can't hear the dialogue over the "whiiiiirrrrr" of the 360.
by Landoram August 6, 2009 10:21 AM PDT
And if it cost $399, and they called it a PS3!...
by bathswana August 6, 2009 8:06 AM PDT
Including a blu-ray player would not be "like" giving money to the enemy; MS would actually be cutting royalty checks to Sony. And spending 10 times the cost of the DVD drive for a BD drive.

And including a Java VM in the XBox, at the expense of their Silverlight technology.

Just not happening. Not even up for debate. MS is FAR more likely to include an HD DVD drive in XBox 360.

There are lots of thing that the new xbox refresh should include. For one, PUT IN SOME FRIKIN WIFI!! why the hell spend $100 on a dongle when you can have one built in just like the PS3? it's just ridiculous. Also, making it more reliable would be a tremendous improvement overall. But, then again, when have Microsoft products ever been reliable? *stares at windows vista* many problems to address in this current generation of XBOXes. I'm gonna be psyched for the refresh of the PS3, then, i might be able to justify buying it if the price drops another $100.

Gaming over wifi = LAG. Why force on people to increase the price. None of my friends with PS3 ever use their wifi for gaming.
by Jawknee1 August 6, 2009 4:18 PM PDT
I use Wifi with my PS3. Connection is fine. No to little lag depending on the time of the day. Why the Crapbox didnt come with wifi to begin with is beyound me. Everything comes with wifi. My only guess as to why is because MS new they could soak their loyal xbots for another 100 bucks.
by ab3393 August 6, 2009 5:53 PM PDT
@stig7k

i have used wifi on my ps3 when the system was on my third floor--and my router was in my basement-- and i have dsl-- and it worked fine pretty much all the time-- and now my ps3 is in my basement and still using wifi and theres absolutely no problem so yeah i dont know what your talking about
by DrtyDogg August 8, 2009 5:41 PM PDT
"and it worked fine pretty much all the time"

That statement alone IS what the argument against wifi on a console is. Wired = works great all the time: Wireless = it worked fine pretty much all the time.
by mgillespie2 August 6, 2009 8:10 AM PDT
LOL, Microsoft can't even make a FAT Xbox work yet (after 4 1/2 years of trying), they is no way they have the manufacturing knowledge to make a slim one.

Sony is a HARDWARE company and makes great hardware.
Microsoft is a SOFTWARE company that makes average software.

Whilst the PS3's software deficiencies have almost all been put to bed over the last 2-3 years, the Xbox is still the unreliable junk it's always been.

VAIO's are fantastic pieces of hardware. i bought a VAIO desk top in 1999 and it still runs like new. Any problems i had with it were because of the crap operating system that was known as XP when it 1st came out. its finally working now but now is how many years after its launch? the Crapbox is just like MS's ops systems. Pieces of crap!

Don Reisinger, your bias is showing. You are the ultimate 360 Fanboy. You should start a new blog that fits most of your posts on video games, the XBOX 360 fanboy blog! Yes, forget the PS3 slim, I want to push M$ brand as much as possible! Seriously? How about some unbiased journalism?

Honestly, this is the one story I've seen him do that doesn't show huge bias towards one side of something. He's just talking about how Microsoft should make a slim Xbox that improves on the noise, power block, and heating issues.
by mgillespie2 August 7, 2009 4:03 AM PDT
It's not just him. It's retarded America as a whole, buying the American console, and then fooling themselves into thinking they got the best deal.

Clearly they don't know what they are missing. almost every PS3 eclusive blows the 360 titles out the water is every aspect.

If any of these american morons were true gamers, they would know that. Actually if they cared about consumer rights, they wouldn't buy Xbox on principle, as you really don't want to be rewarding Microsoft for treating consumers so badly (rushed launches, paid for online services littered with adverts, failed HD formats at so forth).

Everything about Xbox this generation has been anti-consumer, anti-gamer.
by mortimerchris August 6, 2009 8:32 AM PDT
I think you are right on most apsects,

However Microsoft will not put bluray this generation! It just will not give in on its digital dopwnlaod push (however unrelaistiv in the majority of homes, especially considering the size(and expensive unjust cost) of the 360 hard drives..

I think the hardware refresh will come with natal integration late next year ie xbox 360.5 rather then a new console!

please let me know if you agree.

I don't really see the need for Microsoft to put a blu-ray player in the xbox. It would raise the cost and benefit few. An add-on might be nice. Blu-Ray isn't necessary. It certainly isn't necessary for games. Most games STILL don't use all the space on a regular DVD. PC games are STILL on DVD. The ONLY system that uses blu-ray is the PS3. Which I think was a mistake on Sony's part. Not the included Blu-Ray drive... but forcing developers to use it when they just as easily could have used a hybrid DVD/Blu-Ray system. I own both systems and I use the xbox A LOT more. Why?

1. The 360 up converts to 1080P. Sony can only display 720P in GAMES unless the game is natively 1080P. (I don't know if any even exist) I know it upconverts movies.

2. I greatly prefer the controller on the Xbox for most games.

3. Xbox Live is so far ahead of Sony's "free" online gameplay (it's well worth $50 a year)

4. Streams Netflix in HD Flawlessly

Blu Ray would take Sony's last advantage in the console wars away. You can count the killer PS3 exclusive games on one hand. The only real killer app they can hold over Microsoft is Blu Ray. As awesome as the netflix player is, most people still like physical discs. Casual gamers can have their buying decision boil down to either purchasing a game console, or buying a game console and a Blu ray player all in one.
by chrkeller August 6, 2009 9:31 AM PDT
Can only display 720p games.... that just isn't true. Wow some people are scary.

by sting7k August 6, 2009 11:54 AM PDT
You forgot that the 360 also includes HD cables, the elite has component and HDMI. The $399 PS3 isn't HD ready in the box.
by Jawknee1 August 6, 2009 4:29 PM PDT
actually ******, the Xbox is only capable of showing 720p. they use a scaler chip to push the image harder then it can hand. Hence why you get more screen tearing on Xbox games. MGS4's native resolution is 1080p. The PS3 is the only console capable of showing TRUE HD. even the Xbot trolls at GameStop will tell you that.
by sav1981 August 6, 2009 9:49 AM PDT
It will be nice for a slimmed downed 360, but it's really the games that count. Since Microsoft allow users to install their games on the hard drive, the dvd noise becomes obosolete. Also why add Blu Ray now? After all isn't it Microsoft and the majority of its fanbase the ones who claimed that the PS3 is a piece of crap, expensive blu ray player that no one uses it to play games? Now as games developer get better and better at programming for the PS3 the argument that multi-platform games are inferior to the 360 counterpart is irrelevant. Whether you like Sony's product or not, they are still one of the best electronic developers in the world and it shows in their design of the PS3. It's a great piece of hardware that plays games, watch blu ray movies, act as a desktop computer (linux), and not forget it's also very reliable. They are in my opinion the biggest underdog in this console war. I would also like to mention that both the PS2 and PSP are still selling well. So my conclusion to why Microsoft is wanting to do this is because they are losing momentum and is trying to do everything to get that momentum back. Just look at all the news that Sony has been getting lately about price drops, redesigns, and its exclusive line up.

I own a PS3. It's a pretty piece of hardware. But it deserves last place. The controller is flimsy and feels like it was built for the tiny hands of an asian child. The game roster is pathetic, especially if you're not into Japanese RPGs. I waited and waited patiently for all the games they promised when it launched. Finally Metal Gear Solid 4 after being delayed several times, sucked ass. So did Haze, Devil May Cry, and Killzone. Their social network feels like an after thought. The lengthy installs make little difference in the games performance, compared with Xbox ports of the same title I mean. It switches resolution to 720p on most games.

True it's got a couple good titles. Infamous was kind of fun. My problem with the PS3 is the squandered potential. It's the most capable console out there but it hasn't produced anything that's really wowed me, or most of the world for that matter, and honestly, none of the upcoming titles look like they're going to do any better. If it didn't have a Blu Ray player I probably would have sold mine by now.
by sav1981 August 6, 2009 2:21 PM PDT
To Mistuh_Jesus

I agree with you on a couple of things, but don't forget that the PS3 is a year younger than the 360 and that some of the best games comes 3 to 4 years later after a console has been released. One thing I have to ask is what kind of games do you look forward to if none of Sony's exclusives and I do mean exclusive not multiplatform games are you looking forward to play? I own both systems and I can say that right now that Microsoft is worried because they are losing momentum and most of its 3rd party exclusives are going multiplatform. That's the point of my opinion, but if there are really no games that you are looking forward to on the console then I highly suggest the PC because in terms of video entertainment and social networking its unrivaled.
