Is 'GTA IV' really the game of the year?

Is 'GTA IV' the game of the year?

(Credit: Rockstar Games)

Sunday night at the Spike Video Game Awards, Grand Theft Auto IV was awarded game of the year honors, beating out Gears of War 2, Fallout 3, Fable 2, Burnout Paradise, and a slew of other great games that didn't make the cut.

From a sales perspective, it's tough to argue with the logic--GTA IV set sales records earlier this year, selling 2.5 million copies in its first week and 5.04 million units since its release. Although the total units sold mark doesn't set any records, GTA IV obliterated every other known sales record and was met with considerable reviewer praise. I'd venture to say that it was the best Grand Theft Auto title in its storied history.

But does that make it the best game of the year?

To say GTA IV is the best game of 2008 isn't such an easy decision to make. If we purely base it off sales, then I guess it's impossible to pick any other game. But if we look at the value each game provides, I'm not so sure GTA IV deserves the top spot.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was a great game that was largely overlooked by reviewers and consumers, alike. The game featured outstanding graphics, a great, yet convoluted storyline, and some of the best MGS action ever. It's not hard to make the case that it should have gotten the top game nod.

Gears of War 2 was another outstanding title that offered the kind of fun and excitement that I just couldn't get out of GTA IV. The title's gameplay was outstanding, its design was even better, and the amount of fun I had playing it was unrivaled.

Fable 2 is, if you ask me, the best game of 2008. The title featured a real, living world, and the gameplay was outstanding. That doesn't mean GTA IV wasn't great--it was--but to say that it was better than Fable 2 and its gripping story, is a bit misguided, in my view.

Of course, the list can go on and I'm sure many of you can make the case for other games I haven't listed here. I'm not here to say that GTA IV wasn't one of the better games I've ever played--it was--but I think it's only slightly worse than Fable 2 and on par with Gears of War 2 as the second-best game of the year.

I know my opinion won't be popular and I'm sure many of you will find fault in my logic, but isn't that the point? Spike judges decided that GTA IV was the best game of the year and if it was based on sales, it's tough to argue with the logic. But if its decision was based on the opinions of judges, I simply don't think the award holds any value--everyone has their own reason why their own favorite title should take the top spot.

I loved GTA IV and would recommend it to anyone. MGS IV was great and I could play Gears of War 2 each day and never get bored. But for me, Fable 2 provided a superior storyline, an engaging world, and an experience that eclipsed others by a very narrow margin.

If you ask me, I feel that BioShock was also left out of tons of categories, including game of the year, BioShock story line was fun and exciting, graphics where some what good. What about Portal, The Orange Box, why wast the game soundtrack nominated for best soundtrack, JoCo songs where awesome, and the concept of the game a mix of Puzzle/Shooter made it unique.

LittleBigPlanet is awesome, but like GTA4 both of them had to many nominations, why didn't Resistance 2 won best multilayer player game, I mean there online play set newer higher standards, granted I haven't played Left 4 Dead or Gears of War 2, mainly because I don't own a Xbox 360, and I don't plan on getting a Xbox 360 till Microsoft get there things together and fix the damn red rings of dead problem.

BioShock was excellent for the first two thirds of the game and then it just fell away into generic FPS land.

I've not played GTA IV so can't comment on it.
by NeedlerFanPudge December 15, 2008 9:02 AM PST
Both Bioshock and Orange Box came out LAST year, which is why they were not considered. I think Bioshock won GOTY last year.

I would agree that almost any big game that came out this christmas is a better GOTY than GTA4. Spike TV doesn't really know what they're talking about.
by DetectiveBooby December 15, 2008 9:56 AM PST
Well, I disagree that MGS4 was overlooked.

Over 4 million solid WW, 10's across most major sites. It seems to have been a commercial and critical success. It wasn't earth shattering, but I think it is the best selling, highest reviewed game in the series.

Also, while Fable 2 was amazing, "gripping story" it did not have. Don't get me wrong, I liked it up to the last mission where you just shot the guy....some major last fight for all that work right? And the world, while open, is still limited. Which wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't noticeable.

In my opinion, even though it is pretty cliche, LittleBigPlanet should really have one. Its a fresh take on a platformer, gives unprecedented level editing tools to console gamers, has a massive online component, and has the best charm of any game out right now. GTA IV was great, but LBP really is different then any high profile game out there this Holiday. Its not a gritty shooter, a high fantasy rpg, and its not an open world racer. Its a fun, challenging, engaging platformer with endless content possibilities.
by Grifter02 December 15, 2008 10:00 AM PST
Haha! There's a pretty good reason that neither Bioshock nor The Orange Box were nominated: They came out last year!
by MastrCake December 15, 2008 11:34 AM PST
Bioshock was definitely the best shooter of 2007!
by jeezyouareretarded December 16, 2008 1:25 AM PST
get your things together. instead of being a *** complaining about the red ring of death problem stop and go out and buy one. you know they do come with a warranty right?
by roachbrain December 16, 2008 6:30 AM PST
A limited warranty. At my fourth time sending it to get de-ringed they charged me $$$. So I sold it and got me a PS3. I'm sure one day I?ll have to send it in for repairs, but sure beats the three month life span 360 has.

Oh BTW GTA4 is just like Halo 3, highly over rated and have nothing new or innovative about them like there original versions. It?s just my opinion and I can give two squirts of **** for whoever disagrees.
by CtotheJ December 15, 2008 9:05 AM PST
In my opinion Fable 2 shouldn't be game of the year or anywhere close since it's only available on Xbox. Truly great games are at least ported to PC where the core gamer community lives and breathes.

I'm not sure if your comment was meant to be sarcastic, but if it wasn't, can you explain to me why your PC "core gamer community" only makes up less than 20% of total game sales?
by CtotheJ December 15, 2008 12:21 PM PST
Sorry, I fail at editing. It should say "hardcore gamer community".
by jeezyouareretarded December 16, 2008 1:26 AM PST
you fail at life. we all know what you meant. it would have worked with core or hardcore.
by umbrae December 16, 2008 7:28 AM PST
PC is not the core anymore. Very few games make it to PC anymore and they are normally crippled by DRM or bugs because the console version was the priority. I love PC gaming, but DRM pushed me to the console. Now I get the 360 version first, and only get games on PC that are exclusive to the PC (and have removable DRM).
by CtotheJ December 16, 2008 10:38 AM PST
Sucks to be you console fanboys then...
How are those outdated graphics treating you?
by d--keller December 16, 2008 8:48 PM PST
Outdated graphics are treating me fine because, as a hardcore gamer, I don't care about graphics nearly as much as great game play. How is playing World of Warcraft with your online friends and wishing you had real friends to play with treating you?
by December 15, 2008 9:06 AM PST
These ratings are always so subjective. In addition, Fable 2 and Gears of War are only available on Xbox--that leaves out all of us single platformers to have to guess on how good the games are.

FWIW, I thought GTA was a little overrated. Fallout 3 manages to keep my attention a little better, and the gameplay is more intuitive (although it is comparing apples to oranges since they're different genres.)

I think you're missing something with GTA IV here.

There are times when GOW2 is more exciting, or when Fable II lets you do things you rarely see in games. But GTA IV creates a world that feels, if not real, then at least substantial and atmospheric. There are moments when you're driving across a bridge, see the city skyline, and recognize both how realistic it seems and that you can actually go there if you want.

The music adds to the mood and sometimes seems deliberately chosen even when it's supposedly random.

Also, Niko Bellic isn't quite the cardboard cut-out of earlier GTA games or the blank slate you get in Fable. He has a history, a mixed sense of virtue, and personality quirks like a snarky sense of humor and a deep-rooted cynicism.

Yes, MGS4 has a deep story too, but it's a sci-fi thriller. Moreover, it's a game dominated by cutscenes; I shouldn't spend half much time watching a video, even if it's good, as I do playing through the mission that's about to follow. I've been there, and the game is fun but also frustrating as it makes you wait forever to get moving.

The sales theory doesn't really hold up since (as of 9/30/08), Wii Fit (8.76 million), Super Smash Bros. Brawl (7.47 million) and Mario Kart Wii (9.53 million) were all released in 2008 and have sold more copies. Not only that, but they all sold on only one system (Wii) instead of two like GTAIV.

Personally I think it won in part because of all the hype. Sure it may be a great game, but there were many games that were much more creative and original released in 2008.

My pick would be "World of Goo" for Wii.

I agree with you. I tried GTA IV and just couldn't get into it. I finished Gears of War 2 and while it was enteraining, it didn't blow me away. But I just started Fable II last week and it's already my game of the year. I just can't seem to stop playing it. There is so much to do outside of the quests, and it really feels like more of a living world than GTA did.

Without having played Fable 2 or GOW 2, I'm in no real position to judge. But, I did play GTA IV and lost myself on the streets of Liberty City for weeks. So if the judges say it was the Game of the Year, it doesn't seem unreasonable to me on the face of it.
What really caught my attention was Don's comment that "if its decision was based on the opinions of judges, I simply don't think the award holds any value". Is he implying that ANY award based on opinion doesn't hold value, or is he implying this particular award doesn't hold any value because Fable 2 didn't win? It's an award - the winner has to be based on SOMETHING, after all.

FWIW, I'm probably not going to play either GOW2 or MGS IV, because with 2 kids my time is limited and I need to pick my games carefully, and based on their predecessors (GOW was too repetitive, too many cutscenes in MGS I-III) I won't be picking up either one. Fable 2 sounds intriguing, though.

Great point and unfortunately, that's true. I just wish they saw more value in different games. For example, I think Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete is one of the greatest games of all-time. Does anyone remember that one? Nope.

yeah i remember that game. it was great. now stop crying.

GTA IV does not deserve all the attention and awards it has gotten - it's a solid game, but no where near what the critics have made it out to be. I far preferred San Andreas - to me, GTA was always about giving the player a world where they could things they couldn't do in real life. Gone are base jumping, varied environments, fun story line, flying harrier jets, robbing houses, and driving around in a bunch of exotic cars - what replaced it were piles of slow mini vans, depressing story line (both endings are just sad), and going to Burger Shot with your friends. I don't play video games to surf a fake Internet - I play video games to do things I can't do in real life (and have fun doing it).

Totally agree, GTA:4 had all the FUN taken out. No planes, no chain guns, only carry limited ammo, can't buy properties, and generally just can't do the crazy and funny stuff I used too do after I beat the game. San Andreas remains my favorite by far, I loved that for the sheer amount of stuff to do. Out running the police in endless chases in San Andreas was always exciting every time trying to last longer and longer when the FBI and then Army are after you. Not so in GTA:4, just more and more foot soliders and SWAT teams, no FBI or Army to really make it hard. GTA:4 just went too "real" from the driving mechanics to everything else and forgot the fun.
by roachbrain December 16, 2008 6:28 AM PST
Play Saints Row 2. I know alot of people bad mouth it for the grafics and what not calling it a poor mans GTA, but it really was just what it set out to be. A fun do anything sandbox game you will play long after beating the main story. I sold my copy of GTA after a week telling myself i should have rented it and saved some coin. Sure GTA sales where good but why is it that i go to blockbuster and gamestop and see over 50 used copys?
by PhaseDMA December 15, 2008 10:27 AM PST
I don't understand the love affair with Gears of War. I have not played Go W, but the first one's movement controls left a lot to be desired.

GTA IV's ability to use objects as cover was flawed, but at least it worked 9 times out of 10. The same can't be said for GoW, and even worse you need to use cover much more in that game. This alone makes GTA a much better game.

I would tend to agree that perhaps GTA IV isn't GOTY stuff, but I'm not sure what is. I hate how a game comes out in the last 3 months, and steals the GOTY title. If you asked me in the first 3 months of GTA being out if it was GOTY I would with out hesitation say yes. Now not so much. And it's not because other games are better per se. I have simply had time to figure out the flaws of GTA - The biggest issue (of any game) being replay vaule. You can't figure that out in less then 3 months, and even if you can that pretty much IMO removes it from contention for GOTY.

I'm pretty in order to win a Grammy you have to come out in the first 9 months. Otherwise you get pushed to next year to compeat. More so the award shows are not at the beginning of the new year. This fixes the largest issue with "[insert product type] of the year" awards.

I agree 100% with the comments on the award timeline. It should be on a Sept.-Sept. cycle with announcements in December or early January.

As far as your critique on Gears of War (2?), I'd have to say they're invalid simply because you admitted that you have not played the game. Thus, making it hard for you to have an informed opinion.
by sniperdoc December 15, 2008 10:43 AM PST
I personally don't see anything about the title that's supposed to make it Game-of-the-Year to begin with. Name one thing within that title that is truly innovative? Something new other than, get an objective, steal a car, avoid gangs/cops, kill a few people, finish mission, repeat.

Innovation, new ideas, and non-repetative gameplay deserves Game-of-the-Year. If Fallout 3 didn't rate for game of the year, I don't know what else should. Fable 2, if anything like the original, with the deep story, adult humor, and great playability, most likely deserved that title more than a fourth series car-jacking game. Rinse-and-repeat.

Sales aren't a bad way to gauge this, actually.

It factors out baises like "I like first person shooter games", or "I like war games", as I suspected as I read THIS reviewer's comments on why HE preferred Gears of War or Fable over GTA.

The "best game of the year" SHOULD go to the game that MOST people found enjoyable, not some arbitrary measure of something technical that might or might not equate to mass enjoyment...

And sales are a good measure of public acceptance - which factors out items that might be "technically" superior in some way or another, but might actually risk confusing or complicating the game in a way that harms rather than enhances, in a way not intended.

This phenomenon isn't isolated to the game world - look at the BMW 7-series, and 5-series, with it's "technically superior" i-Drive system. In the real world, users found it intimidating, and didn't want to adopt a new mindset at any rate - it was in most people's eyes, a solution to a problem that didn't exist.
And even today, it carries a bit of a stigma, which negatively affects sales - although arguments could be made for "technical" superiority.

Don't discount what sales numbers REALLY tell you about a game, and don't discount what it means if a game is publicly acceptable, vs. only acceptance by hardcore gamers. Theres GOTY cred in that last bit, as much as any cred given by hardcore gamers - no game development company would invest much in a game they thought would exceed the public. ;-)

Then probably the WoW expansion should be number one, taking in sales, especially when you drag in that 15 a month people pay to play it. No other game made more money than WoW this year, bar none.

Hilarious!! I agree I could see if it was G4 or Spike hosting an award show based on a reputable Game Review Magazine's (be it online or print) decisions...
by dddouchebag December 15, 2008 11:14 AM PST
Purely going on sales is a flawed method, as a very popular series (such as any Mario or Zelda game) will have a huge fan base who don't care how good or bad the game is. If we just go with sales, then I would say Wii Play wins, right?

Instead fighting over some insignificant award that was created just to drive consumerism, can't we all agree that 2008 was a great year for games, and that we should prepare for the inevitable dry year that follows?

It's clear that ALOT of effort went into GTA IV. The attention to detail and the overall polish of the game is impressive (I take the scope of the game into consideration when I put a value on polish). I was constantly impressed. Too much hype? Maybe. But a great achievement in it's own right and a true "next-gen" GTA.

MGS4 was impressive in a lot of ways...but I felt like I was watching a lame Japanese movie half the time, high on the corny factor. When you strip away all the glitter, all that's left is a fairly basic MG game. (I've always been a MG fan.)

GOW2 is certainly top-notch in all areas, but it's really just the same game over again. (Not saying that's a bad thing).

Fable II is a huge improvement over the original and manages to deliver on alot of unfulfilled promises. But for as deep as it seems to be, the game is really pretty shallow. Particular note to the "dialogue" system. But I did enjoy it.

The Wii had some huge sellers (Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii, Supre Smash Bros, Wii Fit...etc.) and, let's be honest, that's what matters to the producers. I always have fun playing my Wii. Maybe my expectations just aren't that high. I want fun games...the Wii has them.

It's a tough call, alot depends on taste, but I don't think it would be a travesty to call GTA IV game of the year. They certainly get an "A" for effort.

GTA IV easily eclipses every other game out there right now. There's so much to do, things are different each time you play it, multiplayer is unpredictably fun, and the city seems alive with news and events. The radio stations, TV channels, shows, side missions, and scope of the game is what make it game of the year. Chart-destroying sales were just icing on the cake. You can't honestly sit here and tell me Marcus Fenix running around in linear environments facing the same foes in the same locations each time and then playing on pre-made multiplayer maps is more game of the year-ish than the whole city that was brought to life in GTA IV. You can't honestly say that the ending of Gears of War 2 comes anywhere near the GTA IV ending where you chase down Dimitri after Roman dies (there are 2 endings). Sure, GTA IV has its faults. Every game has its faults though. Let's give credit where it's due, and that's what Spike did.

MGS4 also was a strong contender for game of the year. I'm surprised I haven't seen more mention of Left 4 Dead too. MGS4 is one of those rare games that stands out on its own and differentiates itself so well from competitors. It's not your stereotypical shooter like Gears of War can be. It differentiates itself so well it's like it has its own genre all to itself.

GTA IV > MGS4 > Fable 2 > Left 4 Dead > Gears of War 2 in my opinion.

GTA IV is the exact opposite of what you say it is. multiplayer is terrible, and that can be proven by looking at the top xbox live games played each month, as its never on there at all. the missions in the game are the most repetitive missions in any game i have ever played. the graphics are nothing, and the driving controls are awful. thats not to mention that the story is one of the most cliche stories that could ever be put in a video game. sure its fun to just run around for awhile, but that can be done in the last three GTA's as well. so game of the year? no.

by roachbrain December 16, 2008 6:53 AM PST
MGS4 was more of a Movie with interactive cutsceens. Big MG fan, but i wish they have given me more gameplay than just 5 hours.
by December 15, 2008 1:04 PM PST
Fallout 3 will be remember and revered long after any of these games mentioned take their rightful place in a sandpit in the desert next to E.T. GTA seems to perpetually live off of it's own past. While Peter Molyneaux mesmerizes us with hyperbolic smoke and mirrors (I won't fall for it next time I promise). The problem with Bethesda games is that they are a little too hardcore for their own good during the first 1/3 of the game (character creation through first 5 levels are particularly challenging to "get it right").

it seems to be just a numbers game here. GTA was sold on ALL systems....GOW2 only on 360, and MGS4 only on PScrap......if its just a numbers game, maybe they could go off the board and take into account how many hundreds of thousands play on XBOX live EVERYDAY, and are playing COD WOW. that too was multi platform, and i know the sales were there, and still continue to be there, but its not even listed here? OK...so it came out after the one opinion of the 9 month Grammy rule, but it came out in 08. It isnt my favorite game lately to play, but i will say the online play has FINALLY been done right by COD WOW.

as far as the GOW2 cover problem.....GEEZ...thats what its about, using your cover and partner to beat it. in GTA IV cover behind a car SHOULDNT work 100% of the time, they shoot you in the feet, through the windows, then blow it up, and your cover just left. if ya dont believe me, go play COD WOW (aka...COD grenade of duty!!!) on veteran...and tell me you dont appreciate and abuse the cover!

and like others have said...BIOSHOCK was LAST years release. And IMO, it wasnt that great. Good, but not great.
by bacinbiz December 15, 2008 1:44 PM PST
we'll I personally think GTA4 was crap, the graphics were not that much improved from it's predesessor (glove hands)and the missions were quite repetitive. Then again it got a perfect 10 from game spot, which it at most should have gotten a 7.5 to an 8.0. I thought Saint Row 2 did a much better job executing a next gen sand box game, their graphics were much more polished and detailed, the story was more interesting and the vehichles handled way better than GTA 4. I also noticed no one mentioned Call of Duty 4 as one of the best first person shooters. Don't get me wrong Bio-shock is a great game an all but the grahics and game play of COD4 are stellar.

I'm sorry dude Saints Row is my fav over GTA4 but there graphics were much more polished? If your going to comment on something make sure you play it first. It's why I don't comment on Gears or Fable; don't have a 360 any more. The graphics of GTA were awesome and way ahead of the gitchy mess that frustrated me about Saints Row. In my opinion though Saints Row was the better game just out of fun factor alone; which is what I pay 60 bucks on a game to be.

WHOA...I forgot Fallout 3...not sure how that happened. Bethesda always does an incredible job...I loved ES III and IV....Fallout 3 is no exception...awsome RPG...but as a previous post stated...maybe a little too hardcore for everyone...
