The Digital Home Video: When will VoIP supplant cell phones?

by Don Reisinger

Will VoIP become the technology of choice for the future of cell phones? I certainly think so.

We need two things for VoIP to supplant our standard "CLOSED" cell phone model: Legislation allowing VoIP over any broadband connection ( 3G, Wimax ) and services that offer more bandwidth ( Pre-4G, 4G ect). The case is clear that the world is heading in this direction.

THE US BANDWITDH PROBLEM:
Its sad to hear that we're just barely launching our 3G networks while the rest of the world is moving on. Botswana for example, is already launching its WiMax Service (See 1). We're heading in the right direction, albeit slowly.

LEGISLATION TO ALLOW VoIP:
The world is embracing VoIP, but we cant seem to get this off the ground in the US. "The Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced that restrictions on internet telephony are to be lifted (See 2)." In the past, you could only make PC-to-PC calls in India. These restrictions are being lifed in order to allow full VoIP from any device, anywhere in India.

This IS the future! Unfortunaltly, I dont have any information that shows that US cell phone companies will allow VoIP over cell phones anytime soon. Look, we have 3G in the USA, now all we need is the legislation. So the answer for now is: We can wait for the cell phone companies to do it on their own sweet time, or we can get a law passed that will force 'em to ASAP. It really is up to us (well that is so long as they dont hire a hit man to pick us off before we can get a law passed).
