Virginia city goes open source with Plone

Virginia may be for lovers, but Newport News, Virginia, is for lovers...of open source. The city has developed an "Open eGov" system that is based on the Plone content management system.

Using the Plone content management system, the system is designed for governments to install, out of the box, a website which also includes specialized departmental infrastructure. Newport News has also made the system available under the GPL....

What a cool exercise in responsible government IT! I hope others will follow Newport News' example in both consuming and creating open-source software to be shared, thereby bringing down the general costs of enterprise software.
