Apple's market share explodes 52 percent in April...or does it?

by Matt Asay

Hitwise Hitslink reports a massive boom in Apple's Mac market share, rising 52 percent over March 2008 to reach 11.43 percent. This is in stark contrast to data reported by ZDNet, which showed a .47 percent drop in the Mac's market share.

What gives?

It's doubtful that Apple's numbers could jump 52 percent in one month. However, it's almost equally doubtful that Microsoft's stumbling Vista recouped any market share against the Mac, which has been on a tear.

Indeed, Gartner thinks the Mac is going to double its market share over the next three years, with BusinessWeek reporting that an increasing number of corporations are opening up to the Mac.

Maybe it decided to start immediately? Or maybe it's just another example of data gone awry?

I never expected you to post this without first checking the link you yourself are giving as that of Hitslink.

From Hitslink, Apple's share is at 7.57% and not your altered 11.43%

Check Hitslink and don't lie in the name of Hitslink

I don't blame you much Matt but will advise that you take your time to verify the source or where your proof is from.

If the image you posted is legitimate then sites like HITSLINK shouldn't br trusted even if they can be trusted, they only use web traffic.

Manufacturer's figures should't also be taken as sold to people either as part of those figures might be in some wholesale.

I got to play with a MacBook Air and an iMac in various west coast Apple stores recently, even though I was really using them to check my email at home. However, very impressed - and sufficiently so to persuade my father to buy his first Mac after 10 years on Windows. I'll be following suit in September...

It's was just a error. If you check today it's:
Month Windows Mac Linux iPhone Playstation Nintendo Wii Other
March, 2008 91.57% 7.48% 0.61% 0.15% 0.04% 0.01% 0.14%
April, 2008 91.56% 7.37% 0.72% 0.15% 0.04% 0.01% 0.15%

So it's Linux that progressed against Windows and Mac.

Even is the piece of data for Mac is wrong, the graph still shows the good work Vista is doing to slowly and consistently erode Windows market share.

Even for enterprises...

I did link to it, and when I linked to it it showed the 11.43 percent I cited. It's back to normal today. No need to hyperventilate. I checked the source, linked to the source, etc. It's just that Hitslink (not Hitwise, as I incorrectly named it) had its data wrong when I accessed it.

After 5 years, Firefox faces new challenges

Mozilla helped reshape the Web since releasing Firefox 1.0 five years ago. Now it's got a reawakened Microsoft and Google Chrome to reckon with.

There's a map for that: GPS or smartphone?

Almost every handset comes with mapping software these days, but standalone GPS devices are becoming more affordable than ever.
