Amazon job posting a sign of development to come?

by Matt Asay

Amazon is not your typical enterprise, but that may simply be because it's a little ahead of its time. As such, I found this job posting for a developer position intriguing. A sign of jobs to come?

You must have:

 • Excellent communication and analytical skills.
 • Advanced UNIX (preferably Linux) systems engineering skills.
 • Extensive practical experience with Perl programming and shell scripting.
 • A deep understanding of core internet technologies (e.g. TCP/IP, DNS).
 • The ability to operate in a fast paced environment.

It's the "preferably Linux" over UNIX that got my attention, as well as the obvious need for Internet savvy, given that it's Amazon. Is this a glimpse into the future, or is Linux already the default preference over generic UNIX experience?

Sorry Matt, from 2001:

Online retailer Amazon.com shaved millions of dollars from its technology costs last quarter by switching to the Linux operating system, a disclosure that could provide some guidance for other companies seeking to cut expenses in a stagnant economy.

I figure they're saying it's a Linux shop but that they'll consider people with other *NIX experience, given that the leap from Solaris or whatever BSD they're using at Yahoo/Google/etc. isn't (or shouldn't) be so great.

Linux has been the default for years, EC2 was BSD/Linux until the open solaris announcement last year but if you look at the sample AMIs they were almost all Fedora. Developers hate documentation, you have to assume the doc they wrote for AWS looks a lot like what they are already doing. We are all Linux on EC2 at http://www.digitalchalk.com
