Sidekick Slide: Perfect for, well, no one

Rarely have I looked forward to trying a phone and had more disappointing results. I don't want to trash the Sidekick Slide; let's just say it's one I'll never carry after living with it a couple of days.

The Sidekick Slide is slimmer and has a screen that slides up instead of swiveling.

With almost all new cell phones, thinner is a given and just happens with each new model. For whatever the reason, that's barely the case with the Slide. It's about 0.6 inch thick, which is about 25 percent thinner than the traditional Sidekick, but that was a brick! For comparison, 0.6 inch is about the thickness of a Treo 650/700. Not exactly wafer thin.

And the Slide just feels like a Toys R Us phone for your 10-year-old. In spite of the spacious keyboard, it doesn't seem weighted for an adult. You don't feel the stability you'd get from a BlackBerry Curve, for example. And it's a good thing if you don't need to use numbers; the standalone keys snuggle right up to the base and are uncomfortable to punch unless your fingers are small enough to have just finished fishing the toy surprise out of a box of cereal. (The electric blue and purple color choices don't do much to distance it from Barney either.)

Using the phone reminds you that calls are not why you get this device. Even with all the bars, it still sounded hollow and uneven at times. Far better, of course, is its IM capability; no complaints there. AOL, Yahoo and Windows IM clients are all built-in, as is POP3 and IMAP e-mail.

The music and camera features are a bit below average, but OK. But the big hitch is the lack of video playback--that makes the Slide seems dated already. And at $300 with activation, yikes!

Here's my overview: You'll like the Sidekick Slide--as long as you're not old enough to get a driver's license.

1. Wrong phone pictured.
2. Its 199 with a two year contract, not 300.
3. Some people like the color purple.
4. Nothing is perfect.

i respect CNET and visit it daily and i read it multiple times in a day. love this
site but this is by far the most bogus review i've read. i bought the phone the
day it came out and the call quality is AMAZING compared to the SK3 (which i
owned). my only complaint is the small keyboard and screen but i knew that
going into the purchase because i had the choice of the LX and SLIDE, in which i
chose the SLIDE. its made my Motorola and the build quality is far superior to
the SHARP models. please go down to a T-Mobile store and handle them and
play with them yourself, thats the best way to review a product.

1) Wrong picture.
2) Wrong price.

I usually find CNET to be reliabel with it's opinions, but idk. Is CNET even checked for mistakes anymore?

Wait, is this article supposed to be accurate in any way?
Or was it meant to be a biased rant that had little or no accurate information?

coming from a biased person, who most likely owns a SLIDE. the call reception is awesome quality. button-pressing isnt as hard as what the many people say about it. Chances are, its the people who never owned/played with a SLIDE and assumed its configuration by a picture. The LX is a brick. Paying $300 for a LX that has low ringtone/mp3/volume, original swivel screen, no 3rd party access(nor does the SLIDE), is dissapointing in my opinion. Rather than upping the technology and improvements in their sidekicks, it seems as if they are doing everything but that. I own the sidekick slide and besides the qwerty keyboard, i dont really see anything good about this phone, the LX , or that POS ID. My chocolate from Verizon Wireless was far more stable, more features, and came in different colors for personality tastes.

I personally own a sidekick slide and I am most pleased with it. The keyboard is a tad bit small but that is something I will get used to. Battery life is excellent though, along with the POP3/IMAP email client. Another dislike, I have but is not major to me, is the camera I would've loved a 2meg. with flash but that's not a biggie. I don't understand why people complain about video, because video on a phone is never good anyway unless your standing completely still. The major disappoint to me with all sidekicks are the lacking of a flash player other than that I give the sidekick slide 9 out of 10. Let me end with this I hear people say the LX is better than the Slide but really they have the same os and features the only difference if in the two is the LX has a HD screen, larger screen, bigger buttons and is longer but, the call quality and speaker on the slide can not be touched by the LX.
